The car that tells you the least about the owner
Posted by LevoiHook@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 267 comments
I once read about the original Landrover Defender that it is the most ' classless' car. The driver can work the land or own the land.
I own a BMW E30 325i touring. Considering it is old, this can either be a shitbox or a proper drivers car. What do you think is the most ambiguous car out there? (It doesn't have to be anyone of the above)
delebojr@reddit
Corolla. Anybody can own a Corolla
StopStreet4601@reddit
Exactly this. I see Corollas driven by teenagers with their first car and CEOs who just want reliable transport to airport. The thing is so universal that you really cannot guess anything about person behind wheel
cookingboy@reddit
I know a lot of high net worth individuals who drive very plain cars, but not a single one of them drive a Corolla.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
Same, oddly those who drive plain cars it's almost all Fords.
Used-Psychology-1133@reddit
There are some insanely rich people in F150s/Sierras.
MisterDoctor___@reddit
It’s country-specific. Rich Japanese people ride around in Toyota minivans. I presume many low-key rich Europeans ride around in Golfs.
Yotsubato@reddit
Japan has some insanely nice minivans though. The Alphard and Vellfire are amazing
MisterDoctor___@reddit
Yea I wish they sold the Alphard here.
lawtechie@reddit
The founders of a pharma company I worked for kept the same Camrys they bought when they finished their post-docs. They kept them out of pride until an insurer raised a stink about their fifteen year old rusty Toyotas.
Lapis_Wolf@reddit
What if they are 15yo nonrusty models?
bushmonster43@reddit
That would be my camry this year, it once moved a 454 big block with the oil pan still on in the back seat. It'll make its way to 300k miles eventually
lawtechie@reddit
No such thing in New England.
BillyJohnsFinds@reddit
Yeah I don’t know any rich people rolling around in Corollas
ancientemblem@reddit
Depends on what “rich” is to people but I know more than a few people with 5M+ net worth that drive basic cars. RAV4/Corolla/Civic etc.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
Yeah, "rich" has really changed, "millionaire" doesn't mean much anymore.
ComfortablePlenty513@reddit
millionare is now middle class
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
Truth
ComfortablePlenty513@reddit
yeah, arguably up to ~15-20m net worth is middle class. And as mentioned elsewhere in the thread, all of this is from people buying a single family home(s) before 2022.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
I wouldn't go that high, that'd presumably be over $10m in real estate and that's upper class still.
ComfortablePlenty513@reddit
thats ~5 homes in socal, which is what most boomers here have because they were dirt cheap in the 80's-90's and banks like washington mutual (RIP) were giving out sign-and-drive mortgages.
enaK66@reddit
The housing market made millionaires out of so many regular folks. Doesn't mean much when its all tied in one asset though.
zerogee616@reddit
Paper millionaires. They're not even getting income from their asset (usually) like $1M in stocks would.
Guru_of_Spores_@reddit
High income is worth more than high net worth for this reason.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
Doesn't see why not, get a HELOC and they have the spending power.
withsexyresults@reddit
Stock market too, we’ve been on a crazy run since Covid
BikingEngineer@reddit
They probably do, but they don’t know they do because that sort of rich person doesn’t talk about their wealth.
p_rex@reddit
Similarly low-profile but a bit bigger and cushier. I heard it used to be Camries and Avalons
an_actual_lawyer@reddit
Yeah, those dudes usually go with an Avalon, ES, or LS if they don't care about cars.
Imtherealwaffle@reddit
yea agree. never seen anyone with money or power drive a corolla. In terms of non-luxury cars ive seen a subaru forester or legacy sure, or maybe a kia telluride or some vw suv or a toyota highlander. But never a corolla.
rioryan@reddit
I know an 80 year old doctor with a 2014 corolla. I’m sure he’s got infinite cash. Just likes the Corolla.
Ihathreturd@reddit
It is very hard to explain, but it's just a fun car to drive. Is it powerful? Fuck no. Will it survive the heat death of the universe? Yup.
Colorful_Monk_3467@reddit
How is it fun?
Ihathreturd@reddit
It's hard to explain, you have to have owned one for 10+ years to understand.
FartusMagutic@reddit
The engine might be running but that A/C compressor will spring a coolant leak every 3 years the whole lifetime.
rwbeckman@reddit
Not my 2015... Though now that you mention it, its always kinda not been as instant cold as some other vehicles.
funnyfarm299@reddit
Nothing can be as bad as the air conditioner on a Volkswagen.
Ihathreturd@reddit
The only issue I have ever had with the AC was hitting a pothole that caused the radiator fan to snap.
Otherwise, the AC is gonna keep cooling well after the heat death.
Nickelnuts@reddit
My wife's 2015 Corolla just had its first repair outside of fluid/brakes/filters. Front left wheel bearing went at 320,000km
RedbullF1@reddit
Same. I know a guy who owns a company that does something for the guidance system for rockets. Man drives a Corolla because he doesn’t care about cars. Another who owns a bank. He’s a practical man, often has too much cash in the car and wants to be discrete. Corolla. Another who owns a fleet of them for a driving school. You’ll never be able to guess who’s behind the wheel.
Ok-Woodpecker-223@reddit
As per winwiki, most millionaires in US drive Toyota. But most of them are also older. If you cut sub-35 millionaires then you get audis, bmws etc.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
This just isn't true, there's two aspects to this.
The year and condition of the car. For a wealthy person it's more likely to be clean and new. They're more likely to lease and more likely to take care of it.
But more important, a person who drives a Corolla is a passive person. The car has no flash so there's no ego involved in it, there's no narcissistic tendencies to them. And the car has little utility so they're unlikely to have sociopathic tendencies.
Narwhalcommando@reddit
I think you're last point is it. Corolla driver's show modesty just by driving it
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
More than that though, modest people often feel self righteous which is a form of narcissism that can lead to rage and violence. Modest people road rage, but someone who road rages is unlikely to choose a Corolla.
CPTNBob46@reddit
Unless it’s a Type S, then you *know* they’re ready to party.
bushmonster43@reddit
I just want those 305mm brake rotors
iohh@reddit
Yep. Bad Bunny drives a Corolla to blend in when he’s in Puerto Rico.
il_vincitore@reddit
I’d add Camry, Civic, and the Ford sedans. So many different possibilities with these.
RiftHunter4@reddit
The funny part is that this now includes the GR Corolla as well lol.
E8282@reddit
Checks out. I know a guy who is retired and making easy payments on the exact same Corolla that another guy I know bought outright and he’s doing alright.
kickthesockpuppet@reddit
Very surprised by this - I've never known a genuinely well-off person with a Corolla. Camry? Absolutely yes. Prius? Definitely. Accord or Civic? Also yes. Corolla? No.
Maybe in Europe?
xrelaht@reddit
I definitely do, but I know more with Camrys.
Vybo@reddit
I have seen maybe one or two Corollas in my life. If people buy Toyota here, they buy the highest tier models. If they want an all around car, Toyota is usually not the first or second choice, because people like European brands more.
JKFrowning@reddit
True, that and a VW Golf.
dannybee66@reddit
Golf stick was a fun car. Don’t think they make them anymore at least in North America. But they can be kind of boring looking.
trey74@reddit
I was going to say Corolla or Camry for the same reasons. Good call!
r3almaplesyrup@reddit

Astramael@reddit
Shhhh. I prefer my anonymity!
iamthehub1@reddit
I own my own company... I drive a 2006 Corolla to any client meetings. I don't want to have a nicer car than the person paying my bills.
drizle17@reddit
Same with the Camry
whiteraven13@reddit
And so many of them are the most generic grey. As the owner of a grey Corolla my next car is going to be bright red so I can find the damn thing in a parking lot
argote@reddit
I'd say Camry over the Corolla for this.
BassWingerC-137@reddit
There’s a both a comfort and safety factor to be considered.
mellofello808@reddit
Any couple year old Toyota really.

122113M@reddit
I think every Corolla owner is someone who sees a car as an appliance. Something reliable to get them from A to B. Nothing interesting. That tells me a lot about that person.
LanceFree@reddit
Flew back east to visit my family and my brother suggested that instead of renting a car, I could borrow his daughter’s Corolla. The girl was 24 and it was a Time Machine — brought me back to when I was that age. Air conditioning and aftermarket radio, but everything was manual, including the window cranks, no cruise control, trunk lid was not insulated, 13 inch (I think) tires. It was great, except I was for some reason paranoid that I’d lock the myself out. So I left the passenger door unlocked.
Privateer_Lev_Arris@reddit
Yep that or Civic
Tough-Row2511@reddit
The same can be said about the Camry
SwissMargiela@reddit
I’m not gonna say what it is but I’m a big car stereotyper and there is one type of person I have NEVER seen in a Corolla
8P69SYKUAGeGjgq@reddit
Idk, I'm starting to notice that early 2000s Corollas seem to be the new Altimas around here. Driven exclusively buy idiots who refuse to go the speed limit, either 10 under or 10 over, nowhere in the middle, and always swerving in and out of traffic, pulling out in front of traffic from side streets, etc
julienjj@reddit
Yup. Doctors and students alike.
RichieJ86@reddit
Exactly, I think most of the popular subcompacts tell the absolute least about the consumer. They're practical vehicles, and can be owned by the college student next door, or a corrupt crypto billionaire.
Zappiticas@reddit
100% the correct answer. My first car at 16 was a Corolla and I have a multimillionaire family friend who drives one every day.

Achilles-Foot@reddit
I wouldn't consider that a particularly wide range... all people i literally never meet or see ever
spiceyanus@reddit

silentkiller082@reddit

LordCorgi@reddit
I can attest to this, my company car is an Altima. I am a completely normal person and driver 99% of the time, but sometimes there is an itch in the back of my head when I'm driving that thing. An itch to replace one of the doors with one that's the wrong color and weave through traffic going 30 over on cracked out BiG AlTiMa EnErGy! I don't do that.....but I think about it...
MisterDoctor___@reddit
Damn company gave you an Altima?

caddyclicker@reddit
Reddit hates pickup trucks.
Nick_Neuburg@reddit
Not my fault 95% of pickups are driven by people that don't need them. All they do is burn more gas and keep getting bigger just to drive to the store.
TheEndIsNigh420@reddit
Burning more gas?
This is literally a subreddit about cars where many people drive sports cars. I can tell you personally that my mpg display might as well say "LMAO".
Bullet_B8@reddit
Where is this 95% from and where do you live? In rural areas it's easily over half the people who own them actually do "need" or somehow tangibly benefit from a truck, but in rich suberbs for example the majority likely don't need them.

Colorful_Monk_3467@reddit
What’s the stereotype for higher trim pickups?
an_actual_lawyer@reddit
Yeah, a Platinum or King Ranch with a lift, tires pushed out past the flares, and window stickers is almost always an asshole with tattoos of his kids but never custody.
Regular pickup can be a new school land yacht since they have huge backseats and reasonable room for 3 kids, it can be an integral part of someone's profession, a weekend DIY'ers helper, etc.
fredinNH@reddit
I think pretty much any kind of person might have a lower trim full size pick up.

MisterDoctor___@reddit
After a certain point of driving nice cars, you just want one that you can beat the shit out of with zero stress as a daily. Not for enjoyment, but for peace of mind. Exactly why I’m buying a new Sienna.
wrsndede@reddit
I mean, when you can afford nice cars, you can also daily drive them and not stress about it.
MisterDoctor___@reddit
Even wealthy people like to take care of their nice cars.
wrsndede@reddit
You're talking as though daily driving and taking care of cars can't be done at the same time.
MisterDoctor___@reddit
That’s what I’m saying. Yes, many people daily their nice/fun cars. I dailied my 900whp Supra for a couple years, and my C7 Z06 before that. But there’s a certain amount of care you put into them that you wouldn’t bother with on a normal car. I bet you drive the Macan differently from how you drive the 718, if not simply due to the difference in ground clearance.
You say you’re not worried, but I bet there’s a certain level of care you take to ensure your car doesn’t get a bumper ripped off by a speed bump that’s too high, or your wheels bending by a large pothole.
It’s nice not to worry about every random thing that can fuck up your car in the middle of the road.
wrsndede@reddit
Okay, it sounds more like you're referring to dailying a sports car vs something with more clearance for everyday road conditions. And not necessarily just expensive vs a beater. If so, yeah, I get what you're saying.
MisterDoctor___@reddit
Yea just something that requires less thought in general to drive and worry about tends to be more relaxing to drive on road, whether it be a beater or newer car.

Iirc, it rated high in consumer reports ratings when it was selling, and that was the reason he stated he bought one. The Marauder is definitely one of my favorite cars, and I always liked the sleeper aspect of it. I like to think that was the real reason Buffett got one.

Tacoma or F150. The three richest people I know (have exotic car collections) daily one of the two. Most of the guys at work also do, from basic cleaners through most of the management. This is in the SF Bay Area.

Lexus LS. An enthusiast, a CEO, could be anyone. With taste.
No_Promise_1783@reddit
A Land Rover Defender as “classless” is as tone deaf as it gets. It’s old white money incarnate.
dreamingtree1855@reddit
Tbh I’ve seem some very wealthy people and some very normal people drive Subaru Outbacks. They’re just very practical and fairly reliable cars. They’re kind of an intentional choice… the buyer didn’t go for a CUV. Besides that they could be a school teacher or a retired CEO (I know Outback drivers in both groups.).
SirMoistalot@reddit
The wealthiest man I know £XXm, drives a new, plain white Renault van. Can't judge anyone on the type of car they drive as you never know.
friftar@reddit
My companies former CEO was given an Audi A5 by the fleet management ladies, he hated it.
Most of the time he'd just take one of the spare work vans on the lot if he needed a company vehicle, other than that he usually drove his old Passat.

I vote for my own car, the Honda Fit (Jazz in some other countries). I've noticed Fit drivers could be anyone. You have people buying them because they are practical, fun, cheap to run, safe, and for some just a basic A to B car.
jazzmaster1992@reddit
Infiniti Sedans. Seen them driven by older established people, younger corporate guys looking for something spirited but luxury, and "boy racer" types who do the blackout/stance/loud exhaust thing.
MisterDoctor___@reddit
If feel like the shitty exhaust and gunshot tune tells you everything you need to know about the owner, and disqualifies these cars for this discussion.
jazzmaster1992@reddit
Maybe, except these get driven by just about anyone. I don't think that's the same as say, the stereotype about 2000s civics all being plastered in aftermarket parts with fartcan exhausts.
MisterDoctor___@reddit
Ehh, Z and G cars most definitely have the same stereotype as 90’s and 2000’s Civics. Even those Civics were driven by regular non-enthusiast people during their peak shitty mods days.

Chevy Equinox. They are massive fleet vehicles. It could literally be anyone. Personal car. Newbie salesman. CEO. I've seen it all.
MumpsyDaisy@reddit
Pretty much any midsize/compact CUV from a mainstream brand. They've been popular long enough that they can be a young person's hand-me-down or used car, they all fit the basic requirements of having space for kids, cargo, and having AWD without being prohibitively expensive. Attainable for lower class people but comfy and practical enough to appeal to people who could afford something more expensive too. Maybe the brand says something about them - personal history, credit score - but they're all basically interchangeable enough that most people who aren't knowledgeable or passionate about cars could reasonably be persuaded to get one from any brand.
