What was your Monopoly token?
Posted by FoxPowerful4230@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 99 comments
Which piece was fought over the most when you played? Did you use the free parking space with the money in the center of the board? Did you talk shit about the dark purple properties just past “GO”?
Tell me your Monopoly stories!

The car
Cubbance@reddit
I didn't really care. My brother always wanted the race car. My sister always wanted the dog. I would just grab whatever. Then I found a tiny plastic cat figure, and I started using that, because cats are my favorite animal. It would make my siblings unaccountably angry. They'd argue that it was cheating because it wasn't in the rules and didn't come from that game. But piece selection doesn't have any bearing on the game whatsoever, so I usually got my way lol.
Glittering-Wrap-9814@reddit
Top hat was always my choice. We did use the middle of the board to collect all the fees from the chance/community chest cards, you collected it if you landed on Free Parking. I actually liked buying up the cheap properties on the starting side of the board, they were easier to build up with houses. My favorite Monopoly to have though was the green one. I never cared for Park Place/Boardwalk because it seemed they weren’t landed on very often.
Tim-oBedlam@reddit
The Chance card Advance to Boardwalk can surprise you, though.
I always thought the Greens were a trap. Too expensive to build up, and not landed on as often as the Reds, Yellows, or Oranges.
Tim-oBedlam@reddit
Horse-and-rider, or the top hat if you didn't have the set with the horse-and-rider and battleship.
Oranges FTW. I almost never lost if I got the oranges.
Although I successfully pulled off the Housing Hoard strategy once. You can only do this if you are playing with the rules that limit houses to 32.
Get both the Light Blues and Purples. Build up to 4 houses on each, and wait. That ties up 20 of the 32 houses, and makes it almost impossible for anyone else to build up. And no, you can't jump directly to hotels, you have to build 4 houses first.

The dog. Always the dog
PowerInNow@reddit
I liked the shoe and my siblings and I would play for hours. I was the youngest. My brothers would team up together and help me too sending my super competitive sister into a rage. One time she was about to lose and flipped the board while screaming and crying.
Noguts_noglory_baby@reddit
The Scottie dog!
Bokononfoma@reddit
Yup. We had Cairn Terriers growing up, so everyone fought for the Scottie.
CauliflowerSlight784@reddit
Why did I like the iron??
d3odorant@reddit
You liked the iron because it had an extremely low profile and was the best piece for those that liked to avoid paying rent to the folks with poor eyesight or the ones who didn’t pay attention. Even for those that did pay attention, being the iron is like wearing Monopoly camouflage.
Viva la iron! Or is it Viva el iron?!!! Either way, we all know who won more games of Monopoly.
The folks who played as the iron.
Rhamona_Q@reddit
Yes! Hiding behind the hotels!
notevenapro@reddit
Because its an effective tool to bip someone upside the head when they piss you off.

Fair-Wishbone-1190@reddit
The car or thimble.
Nervous-Rooster7760@reddit
The race car for me. Free money had the cash and purple was the ghetto and light blue the slums. I liked railroads and yellow and red.
tin_man@reddit
Same :)
BlmgtnIN@reddit
The dog or the race car.
goodthingsp@reddit
Iron.
Butterfly_Cat777@reddit
The dog because I love animals. i tried to always play it according to the rules. The 'go to jail' card killed my soul every time.
Alternative-Law4626@reddit
Race car. Free parking had the money. Sometimes we’d allow debt financing.

Horse and rider.
I didn't really enjoy board games. I have a slightly older brother who made board games annoying for me. Except Scrabble because he sucked at spelling and I was a good speller. He rarely played that with me.
Juan-Quixote@reddit
I always wanted the car, but hardly ever got it. So I chose the dog, that way it could pee on every one else’s pieces and their stupid houses and hotels.
Legitimate_Mind7761@reddit
That's hilarious 😂! I wish Inhad thought of that!

DearGabbyAbby@reddit
Wheelbarrow. I felt bad it never got picked. So in my 10 year mind, I was saving it from being lonesome

My first thought was Lori Petty in Tank Girl being tortured by Malcom McDowell and offering to play monopoly but qualifying it with

Upsidedown TopHat, which always reminded my of that crazy-ass show Lidsville...
ancientastronaut2@reddit
Totally
Chibi-Skyler@reddit
I was always the iron.
Yes, we pooled money in Free Parking.
I always wanted the dark purple and light blue properties. They were cheap to buy and develop, but paid out well if enough people landed on them.
norvillerogers1971@reddit
I like those properties too. But I was the shoe
casewood123@reddit
Always the boot. To kick ass.
sodascouts@reddit
I always grabbed the car. After all, I was driving around the streets, right? It only made sense!
I loved playing Monopoly. Too bad nobody is into playing it with me anymore. 😞
Southern-Stable-5089@reddit
Race car, always. I like to go fast. :D
apoptyGin69@reddit
The shoe! It had a little thingy on the back that made it easier for me to pick up
turtle0831@reddit
Everybody wanted to be the dog. I ended up just picking the thimble.
BizzyQueenBee@reddit
I was the dog, my big brother was the race car, and my dad was the battleship. I’ve played as the thimble and the iron as well when we have had more people. :)
Illustrious_Concern5@reddit
My sister and I both wanted the dog
Anarolf@reddit
Mine was the horse & rider. Everyone talked shit about Baltic & Mediterranean until they land on them with hotels late in the game.....then it's stunned silence...PAY UP!!!!
mindscreamTX@reddit
Battleship was my token
LadyNorbert@reddit
Mine too! And nobody ever complained that I wanted it, they all fought over the top hat.
blondvet@reddit
I was always the dog. I’ve now been a veterinarian for 25 years.
Murashi@reddit
+1 for the doggo.
Ok-Description-4640@reddit
I’d pick the racecar if I could but once I got stuck with the iron. It worked out awesome because whenever I’d pass someone I’d smush their piece with it.
PureOrange7049@reddit
We always fought over the boot for some reason.
altairstarlite@reddit
Dog.
And we definitely used the free parking pool
snailslimeandbeespit@reddit
We fought over the horse. Always used free parking: we started off with a flat amount in it ($200?) and then whenever we paid utilities, they ended up in free parking.
I loved the dark purple properties. They were moneymakers.
Lostboyintheforest@reddit
Car or battleship mostly
FoxPowerful4230@reddit (OP)
Battleship was my go-to as well.
Lostboyintheforest@reddit
The horse was good too. Ever see some of the old time original pieces?
Exit4Offramp@reddit
I wasn't allowed to play Monopoly. Apparently, I'm a "bad winner".
Pffffft.
Okieloves@reddit
We definitely put all the money from fines or penalties into the center and if you landed on free parking you were 💸 💲
YouMustBeJoking888@reddit
Yep, it could turn the game completely around with one roll of the dice.
YouMustBeJoking888@reddit
I loved the dark purple properties because they were steady earners. Everyone fought over the horse. Absolutely put money in the middle to win when you landed on free parking.
GnomieOk4136@reddit
I was The Lone Thimble because I always played with the thimble wearing the cowboy hat.
Consistent-Tie-4394@reddit
Yes, this!
I thought I was the only person who played as the thimble wearing the hat.
notevenapro@reddit
We always used the parking space money thing. When someone won it we put another 500 in it.
Bumpyslide@reddit
Rocking horse, am I the only one with this version?
Loose-Bookkeeper-939@reddit
That one's older, hard to find but neat.

I mixed it up quite a bit but my brother always had to be the race car.
Zincdust72@reddit
My brother would always insist on using the racecar. I would either use the dog or the top hat, depending on my mood. Was jealous of friends that had the version with the battleship!

Partial to the statue, but more often would choose a non-game token like a Micro Machine or Lego person.
juliaskankles@reddit
The dog and I would fight for it. My older sister was always stuck with the shoe.
FoxPowerful4230@reddit (OP)
Having to be the shoe was akin to wearing Zips while the other kids were wearing Nike.
