Is a 5070Ti and a Ryzen 7 9850X3D a good combo?

This is my first time building a PC, so I'm a bit lost on what i should get. I have been debating between getting a 9850X3D or a 9950X3D for my build, but I don't know which one to choose. I'm going to primarlly use it for gaming, as well as some very (I thnk) light tasks like Excel or Word.
For now, I have 32gb of ram, 2 TB, a Noctua DH-15 and a B850.
AchtungZboom@reddit
Combo I have but a 9800x3d. I am playing on a 65inch tv in native 4 k. Most games I'm north of 100fps. Playing horizon 6 on extreme in 4 k getting north of 90. It's a beast of a combo. It's not worth jumping to a 5080 in my opinion.
Furyhaas@reddit
Is this with RT/DLSS or without? Curious on how Horizon runs with this combo as I have the same CPU with a 5080
AchtungZboom@reddit
I turned on DLSS but no frame gen... without DLSS I was getting around 75
theonlywayisupwards@reddit
which gpu are you using?
AchtungZboom@reddit
5070 Ti
raydialseeker@reddit
What's the price gap between a 9850x3d and 9800x3d?
lancelane7@reddit
No its not good, its amazing
Expensive-Salt4817@reddit
If you play fps go for 9800x3d best one, if you dont play fps, go for a lower cpu and invest in a 5080 and get a 144hz+ monitor
JayyMuro@reddit
I have almost the same setup cooler and all. Super happy with it and no regrets. You will love it.
LesPeterGuitarJam@reddit
I have a Ryzen 7 9850X3D, RTX 5080 OC, 32GB DDR5 and it's a fucking beast.
I haven't encountered a game I couldn't max out (with ray tracing /reconstruction on) and still getting 150+ fps.
Everything maxed out in Crimson Desert I get 180-200fps (no fake frames).
If you go with that combo you won't regret it and you will have a beast of a system for the next few years..
Intelligent_Ice_2308@reddit
yeah, no way are you getting 100+ fpa with RR š
LesPeterGuitarJam@reddit
Wanna bet? Im running 1080p.. Not 4k..
Intelligent_Ice_2308@reddit
yes lol you are not running natively, even at 1080p RR kills fps if you aren't using upscaling
LesPeterGuitarJam@reddit
Let's both put 500 dollars in escrow. Then I put up a video and who ever wins takes the pot..
Intelligent_Ice_2308@reddit
you are such a dumbass š
LesPeterGuitarJam@reddit
You clearly scared.. Or broke.. Maybe both..
LesPeterGuitarJam@reddit
Why? Because I am ready to put money where my mouth is?
Intelligent_Ice_2308@reddit
and I know for a fact you are getting sub 60 fps even @1080p with DLAA RR š
Sorcerious@reddit
Lol running that beast on 1080p is like getting a ferrari just to do the weekly grocery shopping.
Hell the 980 ti, aw already overkill for 1080p.
HEBushido@reddit
Only cinematic lighting causes crimson desert to dip below 60 fps for me at 4k. Same specs but with the 9800x3D.
LesPeterGuitarJam@reddit
Yeah dude is a clown.. I'm in 1080p..
bugeater88@reddit
thats what i would do personally. 9800x3d/9850x3d with 5070 ti
MDParagon@reddit
Hi! If you have questions let me know, I'm currently running that rig.

You don't need 16cores really, I never needed it and I sometimes use this for workstuff if I do need firepower (I work as a Sysad/Devops)
SirThunderDump@reddit
Sounds extreme.
Like, super extreme. Donāt get the 9850/9950 if youāre just gaming and doing light work.
The 9800X3D is already an overkill gaming processor for most things, and the small upgrade of the other chips for gaming arenāt worth it.
The Noctua DH-15 is absolutely awesome, but is way overpriced for what it does. If you just like it, want it, have the budget, thatās fine, but Iād personally claw money back from this cooler and the processor and see if I could push for an RTX5080.
2raysdiver@reddit
I would second this, and add that even a 7800X3D is plenty, now and for the next 5 years at least. That could save you more to put towards a 5080.
OTOH, if you think a 5070 Ti will meet you needs now an for the foreseeable future, you could still save a few $$ by going with the 7800X3D, and put that money towards games.
SirThunderDump@reddit
Acking this as well. Iām rocking a 7800X3D and itās still absurdly fast.
IrrelevantTale@reddit
Yeah RTX 5080 is the 3rd strongest GPU right now behind a 4090 and 5090 is pure raster performance.
Intelligent_Ice_2308@reddit
I got a 9800x3D + 5070 Ti, don't think anything comes close for price to performance (if you managed to get it for MSRP)
reddNOOB2016@reddit
Guys, im buying a Ferrari, do you think its ok to get the red one?
aupuri@reddit
Tbh I think you should get a ryzen 7 7800x3d and a rtx 5080.
protoneff@reddit
I have 5070ti 9800x3d really good in cs
puppleups@reddit
Exactly what I have and it works beautifully thus far
_glaze@reddit
Exact build I have wtf lol
kemicalkontact@reddit
Why wouldn't you save a little money on the CPU and accessories and opt for a 5080 for a real performance boost.
Expert_Conflict6374@reddit
>15% faster at 4K
"Real performance boost"
kemicalkontact@reddit
Better OC headroom too. Also with a 5070ti and 5080 running the same clock the 5080 will still perform better.
This is still more optimal than spending a premium on a CPU and cooler.
7800x3d + 5080 > 9800x3d + 5070ti.
Lil_Hater112@reddit
i think a 9800x3d + thermal spirit + cheapest 5070ti is best bet atm.
I would pay no more than 200 euros for a 5080 over a 5070ti. In my area, both new, diff was over 400 euros lol
Expert_Conflict6374@reddit
The price delta of 7800X3D to 9800X3D is no where near enough to upgrade to 5080
Past-Author-4420@reddit (OP)
but wouldn't it generate a bottleneck?
Large-Teach9165@reddit
No, don't worry.
Is very hard to bottleneck a GPU with the CPU. Even the 5090 isn't that powerful to show any meaningful difference between the 7800X3D and 9850X3D in most AAA titles.
A 5080/7800X3D combo is going to give you better FPS than a 5070 Ti/9850X3D.
No_Entertainer_3052@reddit
Agreed 100% and this is coming from a guy with a 5070ti 9800x3d combo do the better gpu and weaker cpu
kemicalkontact@reddit
For gaming you'll see better performance with a 7800x3d paired with a 5080. I understand that the CPU prices are at a near ATL right now though and the GPU prices are at ATH.
So you'll save ~140 on the CPU, but spend +280 on GPU. Buy a Phantom Spirit Cooler instead of a DH-15 and you'll save another 90.
So the difference is like 40 if you're buying new.
Surebuddy112@reddit
no, u can only combo 9850x3d with a 5090
way2faast@reddit
I have This exact setup, itās very good, actually insane. My main game is tarkov, i went from Average 50-60 fps to 110-200 fps on the Most intense map. All the other maps 240fps constant ( fps lock)
Other Games also runs butter smooth can only recommend
ConstructionPale7274@reddit
Itās great for playing solitaire
Riipp3r@reddit
Yes very good combo. Or 9800x3d if you want better temps
SushiBump@reddit
9850x3d+5070Ti is a top tier system. But consider a 7800x3d+5080 instead, if you're in that price range.
translucent_pawn@reddit
I have a 5070Ti, 7800X3D, 64GB DDR5 6k, 2TB NVMe, and Iām using all Noctua fans with an NH-D15 for the CPU. The 7 series CPU is more than enough for all of my usual apps and gaming and I like having the RAM buffer because games will only get more greedy in the future. I definitely could have saved money by not getting Noctua fans or an NH-D15 but Iām happy with the build.
Extreme996@reddit
This is probably one of best combo you can get. I have 4070 Ti Super and 9800X3D and it plays great everything I throw at it in 1440p.
InsomniacSpider-Man@reddit
As some people have recommended, see if it's feasible to go for a 5080 + 7800X3D, if not, go for 5070Ti and 9800X3D and save yourself a few bucks, in most countries there's a decent price difference between the two for (basically) unnoticeable performance gains, check out benchmarks online
Lashmush@reddit
A 9950 is excessive unless we're talking heavy duty compute workloads whoch don't seem to be relevant to your needs. Once at 9800x3d, id just take whatever the difference between that and better models and put it into the best gpu i could afford instead. Maybe theres a better OC version or even a decent 5080 you can snag.
Large-Teach9165@reddit
You would get more FPS is you swap the CPU for a 7800X3D and got a 5080 instead with the extra money.
Acceptable_Movie6712@reddit
Get a 9950X3D and call it a day. You will never have to compromise on your PC and itāll take anything you can throw at it
Accomplished_Emu_658@reddit
Top tier cpu and too tier gpu? Why wouldnāt it be good.
Now between 8 core or 16 core most people
Donāt need a 16 core. While excel can be harsh on cpus, you probably arenāt doing large excel activities.
Large-Teach9165@reddit
Yes, it's top tier. The CPU comes in clutch in competitive titles, but in AAA not so much.
Still, top notch build
CorrectEducation8842@reddit
Yeah thatās a really strong combo for gaming. I honestly wouldnāt bother stretching to the 9950X3D unless youāre doing heavy productivity work like rendering, editing, or compiling stuff constantly
Withinmyrange@reddit
Whats making you doubt the combo, all signs should be pointing that it is a good combo.
At most, id recommend 9800x3d or 7800x3d for better value
The_Machine80@reddit
Why wouldnt it be is the real question?
eggplant11@reddit
Yes itās a good combo. The FPS differences between the two CPUās is extremely marginal. Sometimes the 9950X3D will outperform in certain games.
The question is do you want to spend more for a cpu you might not take advantage of? Nothing wrong with this. If you want a power house go for it. Maybe in the future you will want it so maybe spend the extra money.
ProZapz@reddit
Amazing
MTMTECHGLOBAL@reddit
Yes, a 5070 Ti and a Ryzen 7 9850X3D would be a very good gaming combo.
For your use case, I would not get the 9950X3D unless you are doing heavier productivity work like rendering, editing, compiling, VMs, streaming with CPU encoding, etc. For gaming plus light stuff like Excel, Word, browsing, Discord, and general use, the 9850X3D makes more sense. The 9950X3D is not ābadā for gaming, but it is more CPU than you need. You would be paying extra for cores that your use case probably will not take advantage of most of the time. For a gaming-first build, I would rather put that money toward the GPU, monitor, SSD, PSU, or just keep it. The 5070 Ti should pair nicely with the 9850X3D, especially at 1440p. At 1080p high refresh, the X3D CPU helps a lot. At 1440p or 4K, the GPU matters more, and the 5070 Ti is the part doing most of the work.
Your other parts sound good too:
32GB RAM is a good choice for gaming and normal use.
2TB storage is a good starting point.
Noctua NH-D15 is more than capable.
B850 should be fine, just make sure the BIOS supports the CPU.
The only thing I would double-check is your PSU. Make sure it is a good-quality unit with enough wattage and the right connector/cable setup for the 5070 Ti.
My recommendation would be:
Ryzen 7 9850X3D
RTX 5070 Ti
32GB DDR5 RAM
2TB NVMe SSD
B850 motherboard
NH-D15 cooler
Quality 750W/850W PSU, depending on the exact GPU model I would only choose the 9950X3D if you know you need the extra cores. Otherwise, the 9850X3D is the wiser buy. No need to pay for more than your build is actually going to use; better to put each part of the budget where it actually serves the purpose.
