What do you do in the fitting rooms?!
Posted by HighNimpact@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 186 comments
We were out getting clothes today in town and I cannot fathom what on earth takes so long in fitting rooms.
In one shop, there was only one fitting room and the woman was in there for over 20 minutes! In another shop, with four fitting rooms, my husband was in-and-out (tried on four items) and no one in any of the other three had come out. One bloke went in ahead of us in one shop with just a tshirt, my husband tried on several items, came out, got a different size, went back in and still came out before the T-shirt lad. Generally started paying attention and realised most people are spending an age in there!
As I always understood it, you go in, remove your clothes, put on the clothing you want to assess, look at yourself, turn, look at yourself again, take it off, put your own clothes back on, leave. It’s one minute per item at an absolute maximum (wedding dresses excluded). Am I missing some kind of important assessment that goes on?
Jimquill@reddit
Some people do things at a leisurely pace. Others strss their nervous system out at every opportunity. I am the latter
HighNimpact@reddit (OP)
The thing is, I’d have to actively try really hard to move that slowly if all they’re doing is taking clothes on and off… it doesn’t sound leisurely. It’s like trying to ride a bike too slowly so you don’t have to put your feet down.
glytxh@reddit
If I’m the right amount of stoned, I’ve been known to spend half an hour staring at the crisps selection in my local Coop.
20127010603170562316@reddit
Why is there a leopard on the cheetos?
-myeyeshaveseenyou-@reddit
I wasn’t stoned but I am autistic, the first time I’d been to the supermarket after my children both were at school (so like first child free supermarket trip in about 8 years) I got so overwhelmed by the sheer amount of different toothpaste options that I eventually gave up and left the supermarket, the choice was literally too much!
Hefty-Egg3406@reddit
I thought this was just me. One of the upsides of being diagnosed with allergies as an adult is that it has cut out whole swathes of options.
Plugpin@reddit
My daughter is on the spectrum and if I walked her into a toy shop or down the sweets/snacks section with a 'whatever you want' instruction, we could be there for half an hour easily. Soon as I ask her to make a decision she'll probably have a mini meltdown.
Some people just can't cope with it and have their own techniques for managing it.
glytxh@reddit
I feel that way when I go into a Subway to order a sandwich, and then get paralysed with the options. It's genuinely stressful.
It sounds silly on the surface, but I get it.
Hefty-Egg3406@reddit
Wait is this a neurodivergence thing? I can’t go into a shop with other people because I can’t think and walk out without half of the stuff I need.
Jimquill@reddit
Someone said to me once tou dont have to pick the optimum best option, just make sure youre gonna be 70 percent happy. Works for subway
glytxh@reddit
this is a good way to frame a banal decision like a sandwich. I'm going to try to keep this in mind.
thanks!
IsOkay_No@reddit
That is good, I am going to use that
Plugpin@reddit
Most of the time we can manage it by agreeing defined parameters to make it easier, but it's so stressful.
Takes a while to get your head around it as a 'neuro-typical' person.
Jimquill@reddit
Theyre deciding if they like the clothes, not just if they fit. Probably comparing too.
HighNimpact@reddit (OP)
I understand that. My question is why it takes so long to do?
MysoreMa@reddit
Deciding if the like the clothes. Deciding if the clothes fit comfortably.
HighNimpact@reddit (OP)
… I don’t think I can’t ask the question more clearly… “deciding” isn’t an action. It’s not something you’re actually doing. Are you stood still staring into space and thinking? Are you trying different poses? Taking photos? Asking others for an opinion? Trying different combinations of clothes? Looking online to see if the shop sells a different colour? “Deciding” isn’t an actual activity that you can be doing - “deciding” involves other actions.
Accurate_Prune5743@reddit
Sometimes you may need to look at yourself for a few minutes to decide if it fits and if you like it. Of course deciding is an action that takes time.
Hefty-Egg3406@reddit
I will sometimes have to put the first item back on so I can more clearly decide. Then I still sometimes lie to the assistant and say I am taking it all and then go stand in a corner on the shop floor to decide some more. Then remind myself I can return items for some further indecision at home.
Jimquill@reddit
Yes to all of the above. Why do you need an exact 1 by 1 checklist? People arent robots everyone ks different.
iWasDISSOCIATING@reddit
Why are you so intense about this lol
HighNimpact@reddit (OP)
I’m no “so intense”. I asked a question and got attacked by people who won’t answer and are offended I even asked.
iWasDISSOCIATING@reddit

Unhappy_Dragonfly_62@reddit
it’s called being indecisive at times

Unhappy_Dragonfly_62@reddit

jiggjuggj0gg@reddit
I also try and have some respect for people's time, which seems a rarity. I don't know how people can't feel embarrassed to keep others waiting ages while they dilly dally around
goldenthoughtsteal@reddit
This, I'm not asking everyone to speed change, but a modicum of respect shown to other people's time would be appreciated, just like having your method of payment sorted when you get to the front of a queue.
I understand folks don't want to rush, but when that becomes a lack of awareness of others needs it becomes disrespectful and shitty behaviour. Humans live in communities, when you stop thinking or caring about others then life becomes a lot harder, from driving in the Centre lane of a motorway at 60, dropping litter etc , "no man is an island" etc.
HighNimpact@reddit (OP)
I agree. The aggression of some of these comments because I dared to question someone’s behaviour when, to be frank, it’s rude as hell to keep a queue of people waiting because you haven’t finished staring at yourself! It’s really just reaffirmed my opinion that, most of the time, they’re just inconsiderate.
No-Decision-6019@reddit
Maybe they’re trying on a wetsuit
VolcanicBear@reddit
It only takes a minute or two to put a wetsuit on.
cold_tap_hot_brew@reddit
Haha, you know people don’t generally move in slow motion? Just without haste and while dawdling and procrastinating and savouring some moments, being distracted, double checking and just generally faffing.
My daughter is a pro at it. She can stretch an eternity into the mundane with a skill that bewilders me and she doesn’t even notice she’s doing it.
Jolly_Map680@reddit
I am also the latter. I have a friend who is soooooo leisurely. Goes for a wee and is a good 10 minutes and isn’t even on her phone. Went away for a few days with her and she takes like 2 hours to go through her morning routine. It almost makes me more stressed
blozzerg@reddit
In the retail role of my job I can serve 400-800 people per day, I’m generally the key till person. This is busy event retail so really fast paced, not just a normal shop.
I’ve since learnt over the years some people do just move slowly. Sure it’s a busy event with a big queue behind you but some people just don’t have any rush about them. They’ll move almost in slow motion getting their card out, then slowly reach to tap it, then slowly reach for their items, then slowly plod out of the way.
I’ve encountered this with people from all walks of life, sometimes they have a hidden motor disability, sometimes they just are physically slow.
sf-keto@reddit
And others get a stream of texts from a frantic family member who has just been rear-ended by a bloke talking on his phone.

Bigbigcheese@reddit
Wait for the person you're getting to judge your photos to reply because you don't trust your own judgement, realise there's no phone signal, try a different set of clothes on, see if they've built a new phone mast yet, wait just a bit longer just in case
ChaiSlytherin@reddit

Always baffles me why absolutely all clothes shops don’t have sublet flattering light in changing rooms, they’d sell more clothes. Doesn’t have to be dimly lit, just not clinical flood lighting
MysoreMa@reddit
srsly why don't shops realise that their sales are made IN THE FITTING ROOM so its worth making the lighting flattering and the room comfortable? sheesh.

Deciding if I like the fit or not?
Sometimes with multiple items.
HighNimpact@reddit (OP)
Genuinely, how does it take so long to decide if you like it or not? I don’t think I’ve ever put something on and not known whether or not I like it within thirty seconds of having it on.
nickbob00@reddit
You're not trying it on in isolation as a "does this physically fit on my body", you're thinking e.g. does it match the things I already have, would the cut create a good line.
If I'm shopping for an outfit for something like a wedding, I might try on two or three combinations of shirts, pants and jackets. 3 Shirts, 3 trousers and 2 jacket styles (before you even start thinking about sizing and cut) easily adds up to a lot of combinations especially if you're back and fourth on one.
It's easy to spend hundreds on clothes, if I'm spending £200+ on stuff, I want to make sure I make a good choice and get something that actually suits me, flatters me and suits me stylistically, not just 30 second "yes I can physically put these trousers on, lift my knees enough to walk normally, and maybe even tie my shoelaces, good to go".
Especially if you're buying something already knowing you'll need some alteration.
HighNimpact@reddit (OP)
But we’re not talking about people going in with eight items…
Chimithrowaway@reddit
You just sound unbelievably weird and judgemental when it's just people trying on clothes, it's actually weird how obsessed you are with this. People have given you entirely valid reasons - that you COULD have thought of yourself - as to why someone might take a bit longer. I mean it's great you can go in try on what you want and somehow know immediately that you will want or not want said item. Not everyone is like you and judging from the post, most are better for it.
HighNimpact@reddit (OP)
Ok sweetie. I’m “weird” because you can’t answer the question asked, made up a different question, answered that and I wasn’t grateful enough that you answered your own question 🙄 no one asked for your input if you’re so upset about it
pinkloafers@reddit
Sweetie, you literally asked for their input when you put a public post up on a public website that anyone can see.
HighNimpact@reddit (OP)
No, I didn’t. I asked for people to answer the question. Try to read.

Chimithrowaway@reddit
How are you this weird mate? You've pulled a whole narrative out of your arse, how is it you're able to do that but lack any critical thinking skills?
LichenTheMood@reddit
I cannot do that. It's going to take a while of me wearing it and pretending to do a bunch of daily tasks for me to figure out if it is suitable or not. Then I get it home and 50% of the time realise actually I needed to spend 5 more minutes and try to do because it does not work.
But I'm someone who has a lot of sensitivities in terms of garment construction.
acceberbex@reddit
Ever been between sizes or leg lengths? Do I prefer the slightly too tight but may stretch or the comfy but any stretch will be too big? Can these be turned up? How do they look with shoes? Are they seeing through? Maybe I'm the odd one but I also don't just stand there. If there's any doubt on fit, I'll have a little move (lift my legs or sit down) just to see how the waist is. I've never understood how someone can go "I'm size 14" and just trust that 14 fits the same across all shops. I try to be quick and am quicker than others for similar items/amounts but I'm going to make sure I'm happy before buying
AnyOlUsername@reddit
However long I feel like it does, I suppose. There’s no set limit. Sometimes it’s quick, sometimes it’s not.
EndPsychological2541@reddit
So you're saying spending 20 minutes to try on a tshirt is normal for you?

Just got told I’m trying to stir up hatred against women because I, a woman, asked why people (both men and women) take so long in fitting rooms.
paspa1801@reddit
A lot of the time I only need one of a certain item (like new hiking trousers for example) but like the look of a few, so I try them on and see which one I like the most. So it’s not just a matter of “yeah I like this” it’s “which of these £80+ trousers do I like the MOST because I’m obviously not getting them all”.
phatboi23@reddit
yup, £3 Levi's i luckily find that are CLOSE to my waist?
i'll get them, if they don't fit they can go back for free...

TheLocalEcho@reddit
If it’s a busy Saturday, they might be dragging it out to get a bit of solitude before returning to the crowds, noise and colour of the shop floor.
Unfortunately the most overwhelming days are when there are most likely to be others waiting, and the shops aren’t going to put in more fitting rooms to indulge people’s growing desire to sit down on their own and scroll on their phone for a bit.

That's why sports direct has those weird doors with space and bottom at the top. If you're bored waiting you can start arguing with the person or throw things at their feet.

Haha, I just checked your previous 5 comments and posts, saw r/ArsenalFC, and saw you mention something vaguely similar to betting. This is why I shouldn’t make assumptions…

Since hiding my post history I get approximately 98% less unsolicited dick pics from men. I assume that's because now there's not anything that specifically identifies me as a woman, whereas before posting in female subs did.
Don't really care if it makes people think I'm a bot, frankly. Plenty of people hide their history (yes, I know it can be seen if you put a modicum of effort in, but normal people don't generally bother) for plenty of reasons that have nothing to do with being a bot.

I’m usually pretty quick, however my body decided I’d be disabled last year so now I’m not so speedy. You wouldn’t know to look at me that I’m disabled unless I had my crutches, but I don’t always have them with me, just depends on my pain levels on any given day and I’m unlikely to be shopping on bad pain days. I also have a lot of numbness and pain in my hands so buttons or clasps can be fiddly if my hands are not cooperating.
It’s worth bearing in mind that not everyone has the same ability to dress themselves speedily and it can be just as frustrating for us as it is for people waiting for us.
Once or twice I’ve also managed to temporarily get myself stuck in something I was trying on if it’s an over the head job.
I’m only 42 and as said largely look able bodied when I’m far from it.
HighNimpact@reddit (OP)
I’m sorry to hear that, I’m also disabled and did consider that but, as it seemed to be nearly everyone, and was such an insane amount of time, I will admit I discounted disability as the cause.
And, in fact, the number of people I’ve upset with this post seems to demonstrate that the main answer is just staring at themselves in the mirror and trying to decide.

I find this in so many situations... I'll stand in a queue for anything and watch people take an age each, then when I reach the front of the queue I'm done in second and find myself wondering how fast the queue would move (if it would be a queue at all if there were more of "me" and less of "them"
I honestly think it come down to a blend of people have got nowhere better to be so can happily while away 30 minutes in a changing room, with a dash of "main character" syndrome where they don't have the slightest thought that their pace impacts other people and while it's their "turn" they have the right to move as slowly as they wish without concern for anyone else 🤷🏻

I always take two sizes of everything to compare what fits better and what I like more. Even if it is the same colour as sizing is so inconsistent.
If I'm already taking the time to shop in person, I will definitely be out for more than one item.
I check myself from all angles, see if I can move freely, inspect stitches, buttons, seams etc. and think about what I could where the clothing item with. I check what the clothing looks like in motion, sitting etc.
Hell, I might even check if I like it more with my hair up or down. I want to be sure I like what I am buying.

Treating this question seriously although why concern yourself so much? I guess women would pick out more clothes, the limit of what you are allowed an trousers shirts, takes a while and then you are second guessing yourself because let's face it the sizing in the shops now is totally weird and you cannot judge what will work at all. This seems like a male coded post though and like you want me to criticise women? I don't know.
HighNimpact@reddit (OP)
Firstly, because I’m having to wait. Secondly, I am a woman and I explicitly talked about a man doing it so, no, your imagination is wrong. For future reference, if you’re imagining accusations about someone then they’re probably not true and you should probably not say them.
blazeofg@reddit
I know you are a woman, I said male coded, not that you were a man. I think women do spend more time considering how they look, it bathroom mirrors and longer judging themselves in general, media, society, expectations inverting to personal behaviours I don't know. When I was in a bad relationship I used to stay too long in lots of places, toilets, changing rooms, anywhere I could be alone and not judged felt nice, I wonder if something like that was going on with one of more of the other three?
SumeLaMarciana@reddit
Once I got stuck in a dress I was trying on so had to wait for my sister (who was milling around the shops) to help me get out of it. It might not have been 20 minutes but it felt like it for me.
BrowsingnDaydreaming@reddit
I used to work in a clothes store and was on the fitting rooms a lot. most of the time, the people were taking instagram pictures and would try on 10+ items and not buy any of them but be nearly an hour sometimes in the fitting room.
Standard-Spite-6885@reddit
On their phone? Doing a photo shoot and updating their dating profile?
TwoValuable@reddit
I haven't used a fitting room in a while. But last time I did I was pregnant. Getting undressed, trying on and taking off three dresses, being emotionally devastated at how I looked each time, then finally redressing, took the better part of 20 minutes. Not helped by a lack of stool/seat so I really struggled to put on my trousers and my shoes, then getting off the floor like she me sort of beached whale as there was nothing to grab onto either.
Also people take photos/film themselves in new clothes. Mostly just to ask someone their opinion later. But obviously some people make full on "on the hanger and on me" content with no intention of buying it.

Flex in the mirror. Give imaginary speeches in my head to imaginary awards I have won. I mean why should you only get to look at the back of your head at the hair dressers.
snarkmaiden5@reddit
Maybe some of them are giving the clothing the full test. Lifting their arms as if they're reaching for stuff, seeing if it rides up with wear, squating, bending to see if the trousers garrote their stomachs...
No idea to be honest. Im rarely in a clothes shop/changing rooms, and when I do im as quick as possible because the lighting is so unflattering - I hate everything 🤣
Difficult_Bad1064@reddit
Been a while since I used a changing room, I just buy online these days.
I agree with you. People do spend an odd amount of time in them. There's lots of suggestions as to why that might be but it feels like they wouldn't account for so many people taking so long.
I think a lot of people might use the rooms as an escape from the crowds. They probably use it for a quiet sit down and a play on their phones.
Gullflyinghigh@reddit
Honestly, I just assume the people that take ages care a lot more about their appearance than I do about mine. No judgement there, I could do better myself really, but each to their own etc
no_good_usrname_left@reddit
Has no one else caught their naked reflection in one of those stupid every angle mirrors where immediate reaction is, wtf when did that happen, followed by light sobbing.
shark-with-a-horn@reddit
People are indecisive, for most it would take more than a minute to decide if they like the fit, colour, fabric etc
Artificial100@reddit
Feels like it sometimes takes forever to get all your clothes off and try on multiple other items of clothing, especially shirts with loads of buttons.
Cheap_Parking9340@reddit
Ah ha! I've seen educational films about this. Although there is normally more than one person in the room...

Plenty people taking pics and videos for their OF type platforms
KelpFox05@reddit
Probably mobility issues - I have chronic pain and it can take me a little bit to change clothes.
Ragingdildo3@reddit
If it’s a large changing space with lots of rooms I have a few drags of my vape and take pics to see how I feel lol

Have a BDD attack.

Some people take a shit. I worked for Burtons as a teen and had the unfortunate pleasure of having to clean one up after a Saturday shift.
Chidoribraindev@reddit
People take photos, send it to their mates/partners and wait for a reply.

Probably doom scrolling the selfish f***s
PengyLi@reddit
I have a friend who spends AGES looking at herself, pouting, looking up and down, turning around, tugging at the clothes, looking again, looking over her shoulder. She looks great in everything, so I don't know why. I almost know whether something's going to look good as I'm putting it on, just by how it falls on me. And then I'll be back in my street clothes in the same amout of time.
notanadultyadult@reddit
Photo shoot and send to your bestie to get her opinion. But realistically, I try it on, snap a quick pic if I’m not shopping with someone then leave and wait for her reply to say if she likes it and I should buy it lol.

I jerk off sometimes
qash001@reddit
But nowadays if you don't send photos of every moment of your life to friends and family for an opinion, what's the point of life?
heyitsed2@reddit
The only time I use a fitting room is if I'm buying a suit and I'll do some squats and jumping jacks to make sure it's got appropriate flex for shaking it on the dancefloor.
fannyfox@reddit
I did bonk in the Zara changing room in Barcelona once. But other than that, I try on clothes.
ClericalRogue@reddit
Try on clothing item 1. Have an internal pity party that I look so bad in it. Try clothing item 2. Decide I look moderately worse in it. Try clothing item 1 again, and debate if I like it better this time. Then scrap both items and move onto item 3 and repeat.
I never just take one item because it delays the inevitable 😂
