Once and for all, how was this filmed

Saw a thread about this when Carnage a Trois came out but nobody could say for sure.
Jehoke@reddit
Wasn’t the car on a trailer? And he just jumped on to a mat at the side of the car.
plaintextures@reddit
It's a Tom Cruise in JC costume.
tiagojpg@reddit
100x times more attractive.
GarThor_TMK@reddit
Are you Jeremy Clarkson's mom?
Supersoniccyborg@reddit
I don’t know, it looks like he travels backwards after he jumps which rules out the trailer theory.
Browncoatinabox@reddit
You would still fall backwards
Jenkins87@reddit
Newton would disagree. Because he leaves the surrounding object at the same speed that the object is travelling, he moves through the air at that same speed, gravity only pulls down, not backwards. 3rd law of motion baby
MKBRD@reddit
Nah, you could easily rotoscope a few frames of him and then animate him sliding out of the frame. Replace the gap it leaves behind with a bit of the road footage from once he's clear of the door. Its about 5 minutes work.
Alternatively, he just pushes himself along a bit on his knees once he hits the pad until he's clear of the frame, for an in-camera alternative explanation.
mobsterer@reddit
or just pull the matt backwards
MKBRD@reddit
Yep, that too.
LastTrainToLhasa@reddit
If you analyse it frame by frame it looks very obvious that they edited him moving backawards
Macdaboss@reddit
I think thats a simple edit that can be done easily
Quequiquaquo@reddit
Yep, you can see his jeans reflected in the windshield at the end.
bearlysane@reddit
You can see the reflection of the edge of the trailer, too.
tiagojpg@reddit
The magic is gone!
babylioncroissant@reddit
I wish I hadn’t read this comment. I knew it wasn’t real, but I wanted to believe just for the lolz.
Alternative_Life9414@reddit
Good eye!
Jehoke@reddit
Good spot. 👍🏼
nataly_vyrin@reddit
That's how it's usually done. You can hear a metallic sound when he hits the floor.
ddoouuggllaass@reddit
The sound would totally mixed though afterwards, you’re probably right though
greenrangerguy@reddit
Yeah probably, or he drove past a mattress and jumped onto it.
btoxic@reddit
The timing for that would be pretty precise.... I don't know if an orangutan could manage that.
featurenotabug@reddit
It could be like a realllllllllly long mat with lots of room for error
btoxic@reddit
Is that the same Matt that was on Top Gear?
Competitive-Sun8180@reddit
His huge distended belly is a natural airbag.
_Diskreet_@reddit
If he had a hammer in his hand and shouted POWER he may have done it, but I have my doubts.
kernowgringo@reddit
I can't see Health and Safety clearing a fat old man jumping out of a moving car on to a stationary mattress
KamakaziDemiGod@reddit
There is no way in hell they would have done it that way, he's not a stunt man from the 1970s!
It's a low bed car carrier, either a trailer or more likely a lorry/truck
Jehoke@reddit
He doesn’t have the coordination for that. Only thing he’d hit a mattress with is a hammer. 😆
ImmediatePiano6690@reddit
All the replies trying to look for little details to prove this, but nobody pointing out the obvious one of the steering wheel not moving once he jumps out. Even with a perfectly built car, the steering wheel will move as it hits tiny uneven surfaces.
TheMonkeyInCharge@reddit
Looks like he puts his right foot down on something outside of the car and pushes off, so there’s something there.
TheMetabrandMan@reddit
When he hits the floor, you see his body disappear with the road.
Jehoke@reddit
No, the other commenter was correct. You can the see the reflection of his jeans in the windscreen after he lands. Car was 100% on a trailer. By far the easiest way to do it.
Important_Half_7272@reddit
It seems like there might be some clever camera trickery at play here. Maybe they used a combination of green screen and practical stunts. I've noticed that when a scene has this level of complexity, they'll often film the actor or object against a green screen, then add in the moving background later. It can be challenging, but with the right technology and creative timing, it can create some truly impressive visuals. And the slight metallic sound? Maybe that was added post-production to enhance the realism of the scene. It's all in the details.
Ben_Dover70@reddit
In movies and tv shows the actors aren’t actually driving a car in a scene. The car is strapped to a trailer and towed around allowing the actors do their thing while giving plenty of space for cameras and crew. I assume this was the same set up with Jeremy just falling onto the deck of the trailer combined with some editing in post.
AgentCirceLuna@reddit
This must feel so fucking weird
ChocolateHumunculous@reddit
It’s actually how every episode of TG and TGT were filmed.
Desperate_Border6904@reddit
They don't even drive the cars?
ATXgaming@reddit
They’ve never even left the UK!
Kichigai@reddit
Even the Vietnam special? /s
DEEP_SEA_MAX@reddit
Exactly. I love TG and TGT but it’s crazy how few people understand that it’s mostly faked. Trailers, green screens, and special effects. Hell, James May isn’t even a real person, he’s CGI.
Benyed123@reddit
Next you’re going to tell me that they didn’t film with a real hamster
xredbaron62x@reddit
No, it was a gerbil.
Haunting-Data-6515@reddit
Unless it’s a documentary or a genuine car review then they do drive but there are production cars all around then
mindgame18@reddit
He literally fell out of a moving car, of course.
jazzymusicvibes@reddit
I mean this is the most correct answer. He also flipped that Reliant Robin 19 times while filming
IC is just invincible obviously
GapRegular3723@reddit
You can see him flop onto the trailer of you look at the reflection in the windscreen
makabre@reddit
look at his forearms - he has padded gubbins on his arms and likely the rest of his body, that and pulled by a trailer
TripleS034@reddit
Magnets
H_K-R@reddit
Ask George Michael
Total_Job29@reddit
Or Brian Harvey
Mattyweaves19@reddit
You can see his very slight reflection in the windshield.
400DollarPerm@reddit
Good catch, looks like his leg and it stays there for a bit. Basically confirms the car's on a trailer that he then lands on.
CrucialElement@reddit
Also suggests the part of him sliding out of sight is bs, added after
Watchgeek_AC@reddit
Pretty simple. Car is on the back of a trailer being towed. Which also gives the benefit of it being higher off the ground.
There is a metal “shelf” attached to the side of the trailer that’s holding a large stunt mattress.
Jeremy falls out onto the stunt mattress.
Stung hands are securely rigged to the trailer just out of shot who will grab Jeremy and hold him tight as the directed calls “cut” and they convoy rolls to a controlled stop.
Ldn_twn_lvn@reddit
JETTI-SOOOOONNNNNNN ...!!!!!
SpatulaWholesale@reddit
I'd guess it's a projected background.
If it were a moving car (e.g. on a trailer) I'd expect the wind to try to push the door shut, but there's no sign of that. Just a slight wobble, which stage hands would do. And him moving to the right after he jumps would be a simple After Effects trick.
TelephoneOrnery1394@reddit
This. I also feel the car may be angled, the door seems to sling open on its own and the way he falls out suggest gravity is pulling him down.
AndrewCoja@reddit
Look at how far down the ground is after he jumps out. It's likely on a trailer that he jumps down onto.
SwordfishLate@reddit
Yooooooo good catch. The car absolutely looks to be too high. Gotta be trailer.
ImmediatePiano6690@reddit
Just watch the steering wheel, they don't do that when you let it go not unless every part on the car is in perfect condition and the road built with a spirit level.
bobbymoonshine@reddit
You do see him sliding off to the right though, so if it’s a trailer it would have to have like a treadmill on it
GooKing@reddit
Could be as simple as a couple of blokes also on the trailer pulling the mat along with a rope after he lands on it.
Thetreesarealiveall@reddit
Life and limb for his country! 🇬🇧
Mojoint@reddit
AI
Imreallyadonut@reddit
Car on extra wide trailer with padding to land on, closed road, low-angle camera to hide wide trailer.
ThunderShott@reddit
He jumped out of a moving car.
EuphoricCover8449@reddit
George Michael was found slumped over the steering wheel of his Mercedes in 2006 and his Range Rover in 2010.
But if JC had just slumped over the wheel it wouldn't have looked half as good.
WeDoingThisAgainRWe@reddit
Seems fairly clear. So I’ve probably got it wrong.
Car is on a platform being towed. He doesn’t drop onto the road. He drops onto the platform.
The-Dapper-Cadaver@reddit
What episode is this
unclelumbago1@reddit
What do you mean how was it filmed. They just recorded him jumping out of his car whilst it was still moving. The guy was going through a tough time and decided to jump out, they should of got him help.
LastTrainToLhasa@reddit
He jumps out on something and they cut him out in video effects and animated him moving
Early_Alternative211@reddit
For this particular scene, it was filmed in reverse. So he actually rolled into the car. Speaking backwards was the hardest part
bitfitter22@reddit
Or as hammond would say "twacool"
Gov-Mule1499543@reddit
Joke
f11islouder@reddit
It’s Jason fucking Bourne
Overall-Lynx917@reddit
JC put Hammond in a Fat Suit and just pushed him out.....allegedly 🤣
pslatt@reddit
Does that mean he’s not coming on then?
Overall-Lynx917@reddit
Well Hammond was pretty much expendable, I believe they actually had him cloned and used a few up🤣
Need to look inside his eyelid and see what number he is
bobspuds@reddit
They've replaced him multiple times, that's why they call him hamster!
They have a tendency for they're arse to fall out naturally, its terrible but you just go get another one that looks similar.
/s obviously
Overall-Lynx917@reddit
🤣🤣
wazz677@reddit
right next to the car was a very long mat narrow inuff so you couldnt see it on the camera and it was so long he wasent going to miss it falling out of the car
ProperEmperor@reddit
It’s fucking AI… 2017 AI
ALegendInTheMaking12@reddit
Clarkson is like Tom Cruise. Both do their own stunts
Gidnik@reddit
probably a camera and a green screen like everything else
TheGreatGeneral@reddit
I would assume green screen
