Stockholm Recommendations for accommodation and a day trip outside the city

I am visiting Stockholm in early September. I have got 3 days in the city, so I was planning 2 days in the city and then 1 day may be somewhere outside the city. Vaxholm seems nice and a good option. Looking for if there's anything better.
Also Stockholm seems to have a lot of hostel options, in what area in the city should I look for accommodation which will be closer to public transport? Thanks

There are some really neat, and cheap boat hotels ( I did The Red Boat/Der Roda Baten, but there were three or four of the hotel boats ) right in the middle of the city, on the south side of bay. Minutes walk from Old Town, and the metro the RiddarfjÀrden bay. Minutes walk from Old Town ( Glama Stan ), and the metro.

sigtuna is a fun day trip and accessible by SL pass. there is a lot of public transit in stockholm. t-centralen is the center of stockholms public transit system but it is not necessary to stay there. if you are flying in through arlanda most buses and the arlanda express train go to the t-centralen area so it's good if you stay at a place that has a train to that station.

Yeah I am flying to and from Arlanda. I will look for the area with better public transport. Right now I am looking at the Upplandsgatan which seems to have decent hostels.

yes that area should be fine. you can easily get around from odenplan station. i think 2-3 days is plenty. treat yourself to some cardamom rolls while you are there. they are tasty.
if you want to splurge the arlanda express train is 340 sek each way and it's a super nice way to get out of the airport but flygbussarna is 99 sek.

That's the train from airport to the city right? I will probably try that once just for experience. will surely try some cardamom rolls and swedish meatballs. Any other recommendations or specific restaurants/cafes?

yes it is. it goes straight to stockholm centralen. from there you can buy an SL pass and then transfer to odenplan. lillebrors bageri is good. stora bageriet and vete-katten (both chains) are popular too if you want to grab coffee alongside a pastry. beck cafe was my favorite cafe there overall but i forgot what pastries they have.
to be honest stockholm is not really a frugal destination or a culinary one so i would not set your budget for food too tight. or expect a whole lot for that matter. it is typical for restaurants (especially on the more budget side ie under $20) to serve microwaved food
