If itās on a lift axle, it doesnāt matter. Funny thing is, I was already swapping this trailer with the brand new MAC 8
Axle my boss just bought šŖš¼

You got at least another 300 miles on that
Inker0@reddit
Can't ask for a better outcome. I'm sure bossman was happy to hear he needs to buy a tire though.

Legally (in the US), it has to be chained up to not count.. and while driving with a chained up axle is fine, if you get caught with it down, you aren't allowed to chain it up as the "fix" to resolve the oos order...
Iwytsmd7@reddit (OP)
We checked on that, we have isolation valves that lock each individual lift axle in place so the cab switches canāt operate them. Chain isnt necessary. With the weight I had on, I didnāt really need that axle down legally anyway.
Ornery_Ads@reddit
The law is that it must be chained up to not count.
Practically speaking, yeah, it's fine. Legally speaking? Still oos.
Are they actually going to bust your balls over it? Probably not.
I'm just giving the legal info, not the practical info.

Itās only out of service if your trailer isnāt set up to isolate the lift axle. Some multi axle trailers arenāt set up to do that, so it must be chained. Legally speaking, I donāt have to chain it. Confirmed by Michigan DOT

I want to hear a rebuttal or a submission!!!! /u/Ornery_Ads

Ooh, this is actually an interesting one.
From 2022 CVSA OOS handbook:
Under 2022 guidance, the axle must be chained up or the defect still counts for oos.
What makes it interesting, though, is the 2016 CVSA handbook, has the same beginning of that paragraph, but instead, it ends with:
They have definitely flip-flopped on this point so we're both right? Or both wrong?
lawlet91@reddit
It does not need to be chained it needs to be mechanically locked, so no heās right in that lifting it and isolated it is the mechanical lock in question, chaining is irrelevant

I mean at this point I donāt think he/she is going to understand that not every trailer is designed the same. Iāve had to chain up a lift axle on a Talbert 4 axle RGN trailer because of a blown tire. I could have simply adjusted the leveling valve all the way up, but I knew that wasnāt the right way to do it. Canāt even post on Reddit to get a laugh without nicking a hall monitor š¤

OP says he has a valve to keep that axle lifted. That would suggest it is held up only by the inflated airbag, therefore it is pneumatically being prevented from being lowered, not mechanically.
They wrote the exact words that they wanted to use, and those words have specific meanings.

Thatās not low lift axles work dude. I cant believe i have to waste a single fucking second on another āi have to be right or my life is fuckedā incel.
The axle isnt held up by an inflated bag, it is lowered by inflating the suspension bag. A cab switch electronically opens a valve to inflate the bags, to lower the axle. If I manually turn a DIFFERENT valve, on the air line, WITH MY FUCKING HAND, I can flip that cab switch to lower the other axle, but the axle with the blown tire STAYS UP.
MECHANICALLY DISABLED.

Those two arenāt mutually exclusive. On one hand, itās eligible for inspection unless itās mechanically locked. However, if the only way to make your axle weights legal is to use the axle, then itās fair game for inspection (and youāll fail because of that tire or lack thereof) or you have to slide some axles or offload some cargo to get legal.

Sounds like somebody did their homework š
polarjunkie@reddit
It's a tag axle, it's fine.
Round-Guarantee4948@reddit
That tire was obviously severely stressed out
FloppyTacoflaps@reddit
Tell that to the person that found the rest of the tire on the freeway with a car or motorcycle
nekaiser@reddit
As a 2, 4, and 18 wheel driver, thatās on you if you hit a road gator. Straddle it or go around, itās not that hard to pay attention and give yourself space to see road debris.

I pulled over when it blew out, and the tread ring was barely hanging on. Some pieces ended up on the shoulder, but the tread got tossed in the bin at the yard.
DanEpiCa@reddit
That's really the best case one could hope for. Good for you.
