Yellow car drivers, how often do you see people point at you then melt whoever is next to them?
Posted by louse_yer_pints@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 145 comments
Just thought about the different perspective after giving my daughter a yellow car dig in the shoulder. Does the world just look like violence to a yellow car driver?
Own-Try1886@reddit
So I'm the only person on this entire thread who doesn't know wtf melt means
box-o-locks@reddit
I don't know what melt means and I have no idea what this punch-someone-when-you-see-a-yellow-car thing is either.
ItsDominare@reddit
Ditto. I assume it's some northern thing.
Euffy@reddit
What on earth. You didn't grow up with yellow car? As someone who live in the South East, it's very much not a Northern thing. Pretty sure it's country wide.
GrumpyOlBastard@reddit
Country wide, hell. It's here in Canada, too. In fact, because we have so many yellow taxis, it's one hit for a taxi and two for any non-taxi yellow car
EdgeCityRed@reddit
Grew up doing this in the US as well, but then it was "slug bug"/"punch bug"/"punch buggy" for VW beetles. I'm glad to hear decking your friends is international.
HeartyBeast@reddit
... and yet you still neglect to explain the word 'melt'.
gloomfilter@reddit
I've lived in the north and the south, and I've never heard of it. I'm wondering what else I've missed.
ItsDominare@reddit
I have never heard of it before in my life until this thread. Lived in SE for many decades.
louse_yer_pints@reddit (OP)
Where I'm from "melt" would be used to describe excessive force. So if someone absolutely rattled in a goal we might say he "absolutely melted it in the top corner". Or if someone punches you very hard after seeing a yellow car and it's like way harder than a friendly yellow car game dunt then they might say they melted you in the arm.
scoschooo@reddit
is this a common game? punch someone with you when in a car and you see a yellow car?
also thanks for explaining melt. not in the UK
VioletDime@reddit
All these replies to you and still no one explains. I'll keep scrolling....
Voltalox@reddit
I'm aware of the yellow car game, but my autistic ass doesn't understand it and I can confirm I do not enjoy being punched if someone claps eyes on a yellow car.
You can point at it and exclaim "yellow car!" as much as you like. Just don't punch, pinch, slap or bite me.
wodon@reddit
You aren't alone, never heard of it.
WernerHerzogEatsShoe@reddit
No clue what any of this post or comments are about
fruitcakefriday@reddit
It reads like its all AI generated nonsense to me.
gillyc1967@reddit
Nope, I've never heard it used like that. "You utter melt", maybe, but not as slang for thump.
MrBenzedrine@reddit
I wondered if it was a typo of "belt" which is another word for punch up here in the north east.
ISnortedMyTea@reddit
I'm assuming they mean tear ass off the line, but I could be wrong
mackerel_slapper@reddit
My kids get every day, little bastards. I’m looking at the road, they’re scanning car parks and side streets.
DearDegree7610@reddit
Hahahaha Thats fucking hilarious. I didn’t know this was still happening, Im glad to hear it is though, and happier still that is has progressed from sibling bashing to parent bashing
nightwing_87@reddit
We just introduced our 6yo to it a month or so ago, it’s great 😆
PeterJamesUK@reddit
I give my daughter a dig every time I see one first, goes both ways
DearDegree7610@reddit
You’re doing it rignt brother, it’s the Lords work and you serve him well.
She’s gonna be a force to behold in no time.
plummybrummy@reddit
Nearly crashed the other day trying to get a dig in before my daughter did. I’ve banned it now. Until I spot one first obviously
YourLizardOverlord@reddit
Mine too, but my trump card is the rear view mirror.
Stripy yellow mini is the high score.
Edd_the_Redd@reddit
My daughter and I do this, but it's extended to anything yellow with wheels (motorbikes, bins, planes, pushchairs etc.) going past a supermarket is a goldmine
joggersnipples@reddit
Lol this every day 😅
fructoseantelope@reddit
My kid gives me a dead arm for this every day on the way to school. It’s borderline elder abuse at this stage.
DearDegree7610@reddit
Jesus if he’s at school and can give you a dead arm you wanna get him in a boxing gym!! Im an Assuming theyre a him, if they’re a her - even more so !! Haha.
Nipso@reddit
Plot twist: they're an 18 year old pro boxer finishing off their A-levels who wholesomely has their parent walk them to school just to spend time with them.
FlippingGerman@reddit
*to spend time beating them
EMILLKSLEEPA@reddit
You should tell a teacher, that always helps lol
alltheparentssuck@reddit
My kids loved playing yellow car, especially as in our area there was an old yellow mini (3 punches) which towed a trailer that was half a mini extra 2 punches.
jerzeibalowski84@reddit
I thought the ‘cheese on wheels’ game was just something my 10yo and his mates made up 🙄
loaferuk123@reddit
I have a bright yellow Renault 5.
Lots of smiles and a few punches as I drive by!
Atarisrocks@reddit
About a week after getting my yellow R5 I saw a girl on a bus point at my car, smile and proceed to beat her mate with the smile growing even bigger.
That brought so much joy to me that day and I knew I picked the right colour car.
MidsummerMidnight@reddit
That is one ugly car
Ricky_Martins_Vagina@reddit
wicked!! 👊🏼😂
oktimeforplanz@reddit
I was already considering a Renault 5 for when/if I get sick of my MG4, and this is a point in favour of the yellow colour even though I think I like the green a wee bit more.
derpyfloofus@reddit
I like the blue Alpine version
oktimeforplanz@reddit
That one is lovely but I wish it was just a bit brighter. I like an obnoxiously coloured car. That said, I will probably test drive that version too!
loaferuk123@reddit
People come up to us all the time to ask about it.
We should be on commission from Renault!
TheMusicArchivist@reddit
I had a guy at the tyre shop complaining his electric Audi was getting through tyres every 6k miles because it's nearly three tonnes. I said my big Renault was under 2 tonnes and still did 380 miles on a charge.
Honestly, sometimes I worry I spend too long fawning over Renaults to other car drivers for free.
oktimeforplanz@reddit
What big Renault do you have?
oktimeforplanz@reddit
Were you in the car park of a Toolstation a couple of weeks ago? because I totally asked a guy in a yellow Renault 5 if he liked it hahaha
loaferuk123@reddit
Ha! Not me…I guess that means it happens to all of us owners!
It is a great car.
MillyMcMophead@reddit
You have the car I want!
Amazing-Heron-105@reddit
Might be one from the 1980's. Careful for what you wish for!
15th_imp@reddit
does it count if you are walking alone and you see a yellow car and you memorise the number plate so that when you reach home then you can punch the nearest person and show them the yellow car by searching that number plate on a car number plate checker?
Hancri84@reddit
Me and my kids play the mini game.
1 point for a mini 2 points for a yellow car 3 points for a yellow mini
Lanky_Speech4865@reddit
Weapons, all of em’ who the F*CK buys a YELLOW car 🙄 did they not watch the Inbetweeners?!? 🍌
GuiltyCredit@reddit
I had a yellow car for years and it never stopped being funny. I was driving one day and it must have been school lunchtime, saw one kid dramatically smack another over the head with his baguette.
Capable-Efficiency77@reddit
This reminds me of me and a friend back when we were in school. Crossed a zebra crossing, and as we both turned to thank the driver, realised it was a yellow mini.
The driver seemed highly amused that we both started trying to hit each other in the middle of the crossing
littleboo2theboo@reddit
What is this about?
oscarx-ray@reddit
It is a long-running tradition to punch your sibling or co-passenger when you see a yellow car.
https://www.google.com/search?q=yellow+car+game&oq=yellow+car+&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqBwgBEAAYgAQyBwgAEAAYjwIyBwgBEAAYgAQyDQgCEC4YrwEYxwEYgAQyDQgDEC4YrwEYxwEYgAQyBwgEEAAYgAQyBwgFEC4YgAQyBwgGEAAYgAQyBggHEEUYPNIBCDk0NTVqMGo3qAIAsAIA&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
HeartyBeast@reddit
Sure. But 'Melt'?
oscarx-ray@reddit
Strike hard with malcontent,
Imtryingforheckssake@reddit
I thought I was fairly well versed but I'm in my 40s and never heard of this. Maybe it's because my family are non drivers. But never heard of it from any friends either.
We were pretty obsessed with fire hydrant free hits though (how come there aren't any yellow FH covers anymore)?
Silly-Industry1527@reddit
Never heard of that. We did used to do "Mini punch. No return" though.
exhausted-pangolin@reddit
Our schools categories as kids was yellow, mini, and or convertible
Fenrir-The-Wolf@reddit
We did all of the above plus doubles on numberplates. "double 6, no return"
oscarx-ray@reddit
You get two for a yellow Mini or VW Beetle.
oscarx-ray@reddit
It's like "I Spy", but with violence, so better.
oktimeforplanz@reddit
When you see a yellow car, you must declare yellow car, and punch your companion.
slade364@reddit
Legally mandated as of the Yellow Car Act (2017). I'm surprised more people don't know this.
oscarx-ray@reddit
That was just an update to the 1968 legislation that specified it had to be a Beetle or a Mini, which was widely-flaunted, even at the time.
DebaucheV5@reddit
Flouted?
oscarx-ray@reddit
DebaucheV5@reddit
I think your autocorrect changed it to "flaunted" in the original comment
_FreddieLovesDelilah@reddit
Woaahhhhh we were doing it waaay before 2017 are u mad
oktimeforplanz@reddit
Enforcement has been rather lacking unfortunately. We need a campaign, but it can't be run by whoever does the campaigns about Highway Code changes - they're shit at it.
dprkicbm@reddit
Must punch the upper arm, nowhere else.
oktimeforplanz@reddit
When I'm in the car with my partner, we have an agreement that we go for the thigh, so that we can participate in yellow car, but not risk knocking an arm that's holding the steering wheel. Safety first.
john92w@reddit
Consensual safe violence. The true sign of love.
connectfourvsrisk@reddit
Yellow car! A traditional car journey game where you spot yellow cars and when you see a yellow car you either just say "Yellow car!" or otherwise alert your fellow passengers. Counting them is a popular variant. My friend is a childminder and absolutely swore by merely counting yellow cars as a way to keep her charges calm on journeys. In the car seat and watch out for yellow cars.
missmackattack@reddit
ALL the time. I live right by a high school and the amount of kids I see doing it every morning on the way past my house... cracks me up regularly.
hitchhikinghippo@reddit
Yes it does and I love it
heyitsed2@reddit
I wondered this the other day when I saw two yellow cars pull out into the road ahead of me, were they both having a little giggle to themselves do you reckon?
Fortunately I was in the car on my own.
Low-Confidence-1401@reddit
I drive past a school on the way to work and see at least one kid hit a friend as I drive past every day. I consider it a public service.
Strong_Access_8179@reddit
My yellow car is almost always parked within view of a primary school. I can only assume that I cause significant carnage every day, and that every child in that school has developed a firm opinion on whether or not seeing the same car twice justifies a second punch.
abyssal-isopod86@reddit
Dude, what?
remmy84@reddit
A pinch for yellow cars, a mini punch for minis and a slap for smart cars. Our road trips are brutal
_FreddieLovesDelilah@reddit
Fucking smart cars
Amazing-Heron-105@reddit
My mum had one and tbf they're pretty handy and very cheap to run.
_FreddieLovesDelilah@reddit
Honestly I think they’re great like it would amazing if everyone had a car that was only big enough for what they actually need. I hate when townspeople get huge status symbol SUVs, they’re just increasing the risk to pedestrians and animals when you don’t really need a car that big. But I don’t know what it is that’s gone wrong in my brain but whenever I see a smart car I think ‘fucking smart cars’ 😂
Laescha@reddit
Never forget the least serendipitous combo - mini, yellow car, a pinch and a punch for the first of the month and no returns!
Extra-Expression-279@reddit
Lol true true triple punches
Negative-Associate38@reddit
You're always playing yellow car.
Patient-Quantity-881@reddit
https://youtu.be/nq8KrAx26mM
Leaving this here.
peggypatch27@reddit
I’m not playing yellow car. I just wanted to say yellow car before he said yellow car
Lady-of-Shivershale@reddit
Oh, Douglas, you clod.
hhfugrr3@reddit
Is this a new tiktok thing or something?? I've never heard of it before but last week my daughter randomly started hitting me in the back every time she spotted a yellow car.
Euffy@reddit
I mean I'm in my 30s and it was a thing when I was a kid so...
likelivewirevoodoo@reddit
Interestingly it's so old we don't know where it began. It predates the car by hundreds of years (not a troll post, look it up!)
louse_yer_pints@reddit (OP)
Nah, been around for years. Like most things it ebbs and flows with each generation.
Ok_Acanthisitta_2544@reddit
You can melt people?!!
heretobenosey@reddit
I was on the bus with my 2 youngest and my daughter just kept spotting the cars before me. After the 4th punch the bus driver started helping me so another passenger decided to help my daughter. Was fun.
Beach_Perv@reddit
"Yellow car, and I saw it first"
Otto1968@reddit
It used to be Minis of any colour for us 'Mini punch no return' had to be said to avoid immediate retribution
Silent-Detail4419@reddit
Can’t do that down here in Bristol anymore, there are just far too many yellow cars - I want to know what’s driving this sudden popularity in yellow cars…? It used to be that the only yellow cars you ever saw were Lotus Elises, now I see one at least every four cars going past my flat.
AirconGuyUK@reddit
Literally never.
BG3restart@reddit
I was driving behind a yellow car yesterday and was mildly disappointed that I didn't have anyone to thump.
ProfessorChaos213@reddit
Never heard of this yellow car thing, it used to be mini punch no return
rainbow84uk@reddit
Where I'm from we did mini pinch, yellow car punch. Yellow mini would be a pinch and a punch.
rainbow84uk@reddit
Where I'm from we did mini pinch, yellow car punch. Yellow mini would be a pinch and a punch.
Special_Group9187@reddit
I used to have a bright yellow fiat 500 & regularly saw groups of people punching each other. i miss her every day 💔😔
zis_me@reddit
Didn't even know it was a thing until my missus lamped me on the arm in traffic last week
Edd_the_Redd@reddit
Revenge is a dish served yellow 👊🏻
DeadlyBear999@reddit
Cheese on wheels
Shitelark@reddit
PETRIL?
mackerel_slapper@reddit
… punch no return
New_Line4049@reddit
What exactly have you been smoking?
TheThingwithTheFeath@reddit
I find it so strange that it’s widespread because I thought I ‘invented’ this after hearing that Americans punched people after seeing a punch buggy— since I had no clue what punch buggies looked like I decided I would punch my brother after seeing a yellow car instead. (But we also had kinder mini rules— one point for a mini, five for a yellow mini and fifteen for an old fashioned yellow mini.)
MillyMcMophead@reddit
Even my 86 year old mum plays this, the game is as old as time. She got me the other day but the car was parked so I owe her an extra punch because parked cars don't count.
kitt-N-kaboodle@reddit
Never knew this was a thing. I’ll keep a look out from my yellow Fiat 500 from now on 💛
Straightener78@reddit
I’ve administered many a dead arm over yellow cars
Alarmed-Peace-9662@reddit
What do you mean?
Heraonolympia123@reddit
My husband has started doing this with the children. Ive banned them from doing it while im driving because its too distracting but walking through a carpark, its constant.
yearsofpractice@reddit
YELLOW CAR!
frogwoman82@reddit
_FreddieLovesDelilah@reddit
Womp womp
FornyHucker22@reddit
mini punch!
jdsuperman@reddit
Surely people aren't still doing that?
Fickle_Acanthaceae17@reddit
2 jabs for a yellow car in my ends. Extra jab if they flinch.
Happily-Incorrect@reddit
We always played one for a yellow car, one for a mini, two for an old mini, three for an old yellow mini.
lazlowoodbine@reddit
We play one for yellow, two for gold.
TSC-99@reddit
This has been a thing for years and continues to this day. Primary teacher.
fightmilk5905@reddit
They only point at it because there really jealous at how yellow it is.
limakilo87@reddit
I've been subject to mindless violence for about two years now. Partner and children. Whilst I'm looking at the road, practicing hazard perception and proper driving, the passengers are scanning for their next justification to belt me.
I thought it was just isolated and something that happened in our household, but now I feel better.
PS - I didn't realise their where so many yellow vehicles. Who is buying them?
mackerel_slapper@reddit
Sadists!!
TheRancidOne@reddit
Is this a regional thing? What on earth is everyone talking about?
ExperienceNo2543@reddit
If you see a yellow car you shout yellow car and punch the person next to you. Double points if it's a yellow mini
shegottabee@reddit
My kids play this but instead of a punch I get a very light tap because I’ve got Fibro. So not all violence and dead arms from witnessing you yellow car drivers, some of it is really quite gentle 😂
mrsrostocka@reddit
I usually just scream "I'm fucking driving".
It'll be silent and the next thing there's a fist coming towards you followed by "YELLOW CAR". Shits me up, I'm a flinchy kind of person.
Hydref42@reddit
My kids (16 and 13) do this every time they see a yellow car...without fail.
VOOLUL@reddit
I have a bright yellow Volvo EX30. I've seen people point driving towards me and punch their passenger.
baguetteonmars@reddit
I have a green car that is very metallic/bright and I do see kids argue over whether I'm yellow or green (shortly after getting punched usually)
NinjahDuk@reddit
Will get my car resprayed and let you know what happens
NakedPatrick@reddit
I have seen it once.
I play the game with my other half but we have ruled out our own car for obvious reason.
Also gets messy if we’re out and are approaching a place we know a yellow car parks 😂
DearDegree7610@reddit
Mini dig!
LordDethBeard@reddit
What is this about?
Hitting people who drive yellow cars?
monkeyspanker86@reddit
Years ago when I was in primary school my brother had a bright yellow Peugeot 106 gti, and every lunchtime he would drive by with his music blaring and I used to deck my friends…..yea, great times 😂
dnf1957@reddit
Good job this isn't the 1970s, loads of yellow cars about then. I had more than one.
