Stop giving your stuff to Goodwill. It's been a scam for some time now. Take it to the salvation army instead!
Amazing-Routine-9793@reddit
the salvation army are as corrupt as the goverments.
tmotytmoty@reddit
Sorry to break it to you, but the salvation army kind of sucks too.
Forrest-Fern@reddit
This. I remember researching this and finding out the percentage difference of what actually goes back to the community is crazy. Like none of what the Goodwill makes actually goes to the community, while the Salvation Army actually does.
millenialsnowbird@reddit
Goodwill = Salvation Army / Salvation Army = Goodwill

They seem to have improved some, but still sketchy af for queer people.

Dazzling-Treacle1092@reddit
I have not found this prejudice at my local level.
fragrant-final-973@reddit
Are you part of the queer community? Things like this often aren't seen by those who aren't directly experiencing it.
Dazzling-Treacle1092@reddit
I understand how bigotry can be invisible to those outside of the targeted community. No I am not part of the LGBT community outside of support for your rights etc. However I can't imagine that every branch manager and employee holds the same views as the corporate entity. If an incident happened in my local stores I have no doubt that they would be taken to task by the local community which has a rich history of demanding accountability...or else.
happy_appy31@reddit
The Salvation Army isn't a corporation. It is a religious organization. They often don't say the quite part out loud in more liberal areas, but don't be fooled.
Pretend-Policy832@reddit
I prefer giving stuff in buy no things groups now. It’s nice knowing someone can use your stuff, and there’s no longer a middle man taking a cut.

Absolutely not.

We were starting our "garden", such as it is, but one of the wells for our town crapped out. It's been getting shitty for 30 years, apparently, but... nothing was done. Now we're on stage 4 water rationing, not supposed to water outside at all, except maybe with a hose 1 day a week. (I could be mistaken - it could be don't water at all. )
How are we supposed to get ready for the apocalypse on water rationing? It feels so ridiculous. ( We do have rain catchment with some still in there but we're in a drought and need rain. )
On another note, I spent a week in the city last week and it's such a disconnect. Plenty of water (of course), cheaper gas, stacks of stuff in Costco almost as tall as me.... it boggles the mind.
Thanks fur the space to vent. When I talk about these things to my friends (who live in the city), their eyes glaze over like I'm speaking a foreign language. Am I nuts and everything's really fine? Boggles the mind.
missbwith2boys@reddit
If you run the shower to get it hot before stepping in, you can put a bucket in there to catch the water. If you have a rain barrel set up, you can dump the water in the top. Similarly, you probably pour a lot of water down your kitchen sink, and capturing that can help.
Mulch the hell out of your garden. I throw chopped straw on top, or compost from my bins, or leaf mulch. I also chop and drop weeds or comfrey, and any cut grass from the lawn works too. A nice layer of mulch (once the soil has warmed up) will do nicely to keep the soil moist.
threespruces68@reddit
We've been catching the water in the shower since our water district declared drought restrictions in April. I use it to irrigate the roses at the base of my front walkway, which should be in bloom any day now. Yay! Water conservation is becoming a serious thing. I pay attention to every drop that can be reused for another purpose rather than letting it go down the drain.
missbwith2boys@reddit
It’s the way of the future.
I saw this nifty water catcher for a shower, made in Australia. A bit (like far too) expensive. Sevas was the brand. Basically a thin water catcher with handles.
wishinforfishin@reddit
I just saw that this week too, but decided the breakeven is too long! We'll find another way for the short term.
litreofstarlight@reddit
Oof. I like the idea, but AUD$79 is a lot.
missbwith2boys@reddit
Yeah. Agreed.
funke75@reddit
Even better if you take baths, you can use all the water. Heck, any time my wife takes an epson salt bath I make sure to use the water for my plants
buckeyecubfan@reddit
Living in major city but hearing stories about storages but not seeing much impact. Even the produce issues I have heard mentioned. I have been wondering if resources are being given to cities first. You comment gives evidence of that. I may act like things are normal as live in blue/purple area of red state surrounded by red. I wonder how much is denial and how much is acting.
Dinohoff@reddit
Not sure how much rain your area gets but have you considered rain barrels? We have rain barrels we use to water our garden since we have whole house water conditioning system since we are on well & septic.
Southern_Air3501@reddit
We're supposed to get a heavier monsoon season this year, so will definitely look into this!
SquirrelyMcNutz@reddit
Maybe look for a drip hose irrigation type thing? Those use a lot less water as you aren't spraying it everywhere and losing a bunch to evaporation.
Southern_Air3501@reddit
Yes, thank you, we have that set up. My bf is obsessed with that thing. Idk if that counts as hose watering or not but we're low key using it on what we have in so far.
SquirrelyMcNutz@reddit
Be sure and check local ordinances for the legality of using rain barrels. In some places it's illegal because it denies water ending up back in rivers/aquifers/etc.

Weather forecasts have go to shit. I swear even radar isn’t working properly.
“A beautiful sunny day all day!”
Then 30 seconds later it’s pissing with rain.
IncomingAxofKindness@reddit
You would think if there was one thing AI would be good for it would be improving weather forecasts.

I would trust a raccoon before trusting an AI forecast.
PhiloLibrarian@reddit
I trust the birds and bugs more for my weather…
splat-y-chila@reddit
When the cats are all down sleeping hard, it's actually gonna rain. When my head feels like it's gonna implode, a new weather front is coming in the next 2.5 days. If the canned jars pop hard when I open them, there's a pressure swing.
Pretend-Policy832@reddit
Definitely noticed that about my cats! They pretty much sleep all day on rainy days. I read somewhere that it’s because biologically, their prey would all be hiding on these days, so no point in wasting energy trying to hunt. And I was like oh wow, that makes sense
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
The frogs that live outside my bedroom window have a fantastic track record
Any_Needleworker_273@reddit
I learned a new guide for gardening this year, from Maine, that said, "Don't plant peas until the peepers are peeping." which was pretty spot on for our area. Nature is a pretty good guide if you pay attention.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
On an old account a few months ago I suggested on another subreddit that using methods from that past might save us in the future. I got called names.
Any_Needleworker_273@reddit
I think we have lost so much solid knowledge under the guise of either progress, or western hubris, or viewing certain practices as "backwards," when in fact there was a lot of validity to them. I think a lot of permaculture and "organic" techniques/approaches can be viewed that way. Modern folks think they *discovered something new, when in fact, pre-industrializatio, that's just the way many of these things were done.
ValMo88@reddit
Convenience gained is skills lost
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
I’ve even seen people insisting that there would be starvation without ultra processed food, not minimally processed like canned vegetables but ultra processed like Doritos. I’m hoping they’re shills/bots and not just idiots.
Any_Needleworker_273@reddit
Well, idiots (and bots) have been idiot-ing hard for a while now. While there is a case to be made industrial agriculture feeding more people, those systems are not with out their problems, as we're really starting to see the fallout from prolific herbicide/pesticide use. It's a huge, complicated issue, but I sure don't believe ultraprocessed dorito's are what's feeding the masses, but rice, corn and beans are staples world wide.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
And the fallout from extreme monoculture. When you only grown one variety of something it’s extremely vulnerable to any disease or other issue.
PhiloLibrarian@reddit
When I think of the future and what I hope for my kids, it’s actually very close to what my great grandparents did, crofting and living off the land.
HappyAnimalCracker@reddit
Oh man even the real-time is way off. Been still all night but the app says we’re getting 25mph winds with larger gusts right now.
I bought a weather station. Doesn’t do forecasts but at least I know the real conditions and which way the barometer is trending. I’m learning to be my own weather person, I guess.
Own-Swan2646@reddit
There's a few good books out there on how to read the weather based on the sky as well. I'd highly encourage if you feel like going down the rabbit hole. It has really helped me observe weather more than just look at numbers.
imhereforthepuppies@reddit
Do you have any recommendations?
Own-Swan2646@reddit
This one https://a.co/d/00uoP86K was a good start but have read like 15 now each have a different spin.
SquirrelyMcNutz@reddit
I wanna put up that picture of a weather rock, but can't find it...
HappyAnimalCracker@reddit
Good suggestion. I’ll do that. I could definitely use some help lifting my bell curve.
JohnnyDarque@reddit
With the cuts to NOAA, they can't do their tests as often and they're short staffed. So the news gets less accurate info.
HappyAnimalCracker@reddit
I assumed that was what was behind it. When the news broke that the cuts to NOAA were coming, that’s when I decided to buy the weather station.
Nevertheless, I’m still surprised by how bad it’s gotten. I figured forecasts would go to hell but didn’t anticipate that even current conditions would be so far off. I would have assumed much of that would be automated from the official weather stations. It’s sad how often I’ve underestimated how crappy things would get, given my level of pessimism!
AirborneGeek@reddit
I've been joking about how the HRRR (high-quality, short-term "convection-allowing model" ("CAM")) doesn't know what day of the week it is anymore for about two years now. Seeing faltering in some of the mid-range ones, too, where the 3-5 day out forecast is just all over the place.
I've always blamed this on--especially in the case of the CAMs--them not handling climate change very well, as their fine-grain atmospheric models just don't work anymore.
I assume it's only going to get worse, and I don't like it.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
It’s even while it’s happening! I’m standing there watching it rain while the radar and forecast say it’s sunny.
FormerNeighborhood80@reddit
We have noticed that also. Tornadoes, hail, high winds out of nowhere. We have several weather apps we use and the weather channel, local news and FEMA. We seem to have lost the ability to forecast.
KiaRioGrl@reddit
Didn't Trump DOGE all the NOAA radar station staff? I'm pretty sure I read articles predicting this as an inevitable consequence last year.
OBotB@reddit
They cut almost 1k NOAA employees, they reduced weather balloon launch statio s and the launches themselves which are used for readings that allow accurate predictions.
No_Possible_7108@reddit
So glad they cut all this important stuff to "save money", then turn around and spend 1000x as much on a bullshit unnecessary war.
Nice things are illegal here
pomonalost@reddit
Same but opposite weather. They keep saying it'll rain but it's just drought. We need more rain!
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
We’re in a drought too, we’ve had more rain than they claim but not enough to do anything.
dust-ranger@reddit
I noticed this almost immediately after DOGE gutted NOAA funding and staff. Didn't the even shut down some weather satellites because they were detecting carbon/methane emissions or am I misremembering that?
Ecliphon@reddit
It’s because of budget (staff) cuts. We had 5 tornados touch down in an area and no warnings or sirens until they were already on the ground.

Has anyone else noticed a potential increase in elegance of telephone numbers from spam callers recently?
My phone warns of likely spam calls and I never answer calls from unknown numbers (if it’s a legitimate call, they’ll leave a voicemail.)
But over the last two weeks I’ve received calls from numbers with our local area code and the next three numbers are our previous area code. It feels statistically improbable that this isn’t by design, hoping to increase the chances that I answer the calls.
Pretend-Policy832@reddit
Yeah, started getting them after I submitted a loan application. FML. Wonder if my data was leaked. I just want to pick up the call and scream at the top of my lungs. In another subreddit, someone played a porno soundtrack when they answered, and I guess that helped?
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
Yes. I used to get 2 or 3 a day then my husband answered to yell at them(I told him it was just ai/recording, he didn’t listen to me) so now I get at least 6.
Unique-Sock3366@reddit
My husband answers his, then blocks the numbers.
The cascading effect seems far worse. He receives MANY more of these calls than I do.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
He answered it on my phone 😭 it’s awful and blocking does nothing
Serious_Yard4262@reddit
If you don't get many calls from unknown numbers maybe turn on call blocking/do not disturb except for saved contacts for a few days. They usually slow back down if no one answers for about a week
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
I can’t. My husband has health issues and I can’t take the risk of missing an important call.
No_Possible_7108@reddit
Just forward calls from all unknown numbers to his phone lol
NoTerm3078@reddit
Ok does he talk when he answers? All that does is get the number marked as a legitimate number. Either ignore the call or answer it and say NOTHING to "trick" the spammer into thinking they have called an automated line. Talking is the worst thing you can do.
Unique-Sock3366@reddit
He does. I absolutely agree!
iamablackbeltman@reddit
I recently got a spam call from my area code with the last 4 digits of my mom's cell. Coincidence?
TanneriteTed@reddit
Similar note: I got a call disguised as the high school I graduated from. Which may not seem like a big deal, but I went to multiple high schools in different states. Even my lifelong friends couldn't tell you the name of the school I graduated from. I doubt my wife even could.
One large coincidence or these goons know waaaay more about me than I suspect.
No_Possible_7108@reddit
Musk did fuck around in all those systems, who knows what all sort of info they could have accessed(and later sold)

I sketch and draw a lot as my own hobby/passion. I kinda like my neat little edc kit of rotating pigments, erasers and go-to pencils. If anyone wants to share or trade notes about making a little art kit for psychological survival I'm all ears.
That said, I'd like to gather supplies for something like a quick takedown workshop. As in I rent a lot and so I don't have the luxury of having a shed or garage to work out of. But I'd like to figure out vice clamps, awl, and maybe some flour glue and maybe some wax to put some scrap journals together upcycled from typically unusable paper. Maybe a screen window setup for paper recycling in the future? How does one do a cold press for multimedia paper? Would there be finer screens for finer grade paper?

Just got two 10x3 foot garden beds, for me and my sister to share, going to put a arch trestle between them and I’m growing jack be little pumpkins and cucumbers for pickles on it. The beds will have collards, green beans, peppers, and more. Got my tobacco seedlings in the ground too.
NovelPermission634@reddit
Just bought a new house recently and I feel really good about the fact that either naturally it's a little food forest or someone else years ago planted some great stuff. Either way in this economy it's amazing to have some fruit and nut trees I won't have to wait to see see production from.
We also got the garden started which is great. Now I am just nervous about trying to sell my 1st home with everything going to shit.
Ivorypetal@reddit
Ive spent 10 years planting my fruit and nut trees on my purchased home's grass lot. Turning it into a food forest on 1/4 acre lot.
I also added stock tank raised beds, leaving it fully intact and only draining using the plug hole since im in texas and it helps in the summer.

You and I think a lot alike and have similar trees. I'll add loquats, pears, peaches, apricots, kiwis, grapes, English walnut, blackberries, raspberries, cherries, apples, naval oranges, limes, lemons, plums, tangelos, and mandarins to what you have. I love being able to go outside and grab something to eat and not have ro go to the store. Plus, all organic!
Ivorypetal@reddit
Same! I forgot im trialing kiwi too!
I try to have 3 things fruiting at all times so that there is always fresh eating foods if times ever got hard.
MindFluffy5906@reddit
Isn't it wonderful? I have about 50 fruit and nut trees here. Half between 50 and 70 years old, and half 3-5 years old. I've planted about 25 trees in the last several years, so that eventually we will have a wider variety of food to choose from. I just need to buy a dehydrator now and hope I can save myself from eating everything while fresh so I can dehydrate!
Ivorypetal@reddit
It is pretty awesome. Takes up alot of my weekends tending to the experiments but worth it.

Im northern zone 6. I found American hazelnut, shagbark hickory, walnut, acorn, highbush cranberry, blackberries, wineberry, black raspberries, wild strawberry, wild grapes, hawthorn, arrowood viburnum, and lots of other great stuff.
I already planted 6 apple trees, 4 plums, 3 nanking cherry, 2 sand cherry, 2 aronia berry, 3 gooseberry, 6 blueberries 2 mulberry and a grape vine.
Were also working on getting my garden put in.
Efficient-Water2384@reddit
Fig trees are super easy to propogate from cuttings. I've heard the same about mulberries but I just bought mine so I haven't tried those yet. In addition to having more trees for yourself, fruit trees in pots would be good barter items.
Ivorypetal@reddit
True. I frequently gift peach, pomegranate, citrus and fig seedlings every fall.
FethB@reddit
That was an awesome discovery my husband and I made in 2020 when we were trying to minimize being out and about to buy groceries. We hadn’t realized previously that our little patch of suburbia had a thundercloud plum tree, gooseberry bush, apple tree, lilacs, and even some opportunistic lamb’s quarter popping up. Plus the neighbors’ tree dropped a few convenient pears into our yard. It’s not much but I’ve been really happy to have all of this.
NotDinahShore@reddit
US Treasury notes and bonds sold off dramatically yesterday. As we all know, inflation is rising again and interest rates have been creeping up. Still too early to say, but interest rates could soon start “crashing up”.
Interestingly though, while interest rates and oil were up yesterday, the ex-energy commodity complex was down sharply. Silver was down 9%. Copper 3% and others similarly.
I’m reading Andrew Ross Sorkin’s absolutely great book “1929”. He pieces together deeply researched events, conversations, and people into a literary documentary about the year 1929. When people talk about how history doesn’t repeat, but it rhymes, you can see how 2026 feels a lot like 1929.

(1) Is there any way to preserve lettuce, specifically romaine lettuce, long term?
(2) I'm debating whether it's work it to get a small solar charger given the fuel crisis. The main issues are that (a) I live in a small apartment and (b) there's not that much sun (good for when it's hot, not so good for Solar panel purposes). If it would be a good idea, would anyone have any recommendations? Would prefer it to be under $350 if possible.
burn_corpo_shit@reddit
maybe turn it into kimchi? I'm at a loss there tbh besides starting a small food garden
PrairieFire_withwind@reddit
Many foods are better stored 'on the hoof' or 'on the vine'
Lettuce is THE best application of hydroponics. You can grow a lot, keep it cool enough to keep it from bolting in ungodly hot out of season heat and not need more than a pump and some lights.
melympia@reddit
Or... just grow a few on ypur windowsills and only ever harvest the outer leaves.
SquirrelyMcNutz@reddit
1) Freeze dry maybe? There's dehydrated or whatever, lettuce or something similar that I find in like yakisoba noodle bowls.
2) A small solar charger would be good for your phone or a tablet.

Took a friend by the food bank. Said there wasn’t nearly as much available as before, but some of what was there she hadn’t seen there before: local farm eggs, Napa cabbage, daikon radish, fennel. They had pears that were in very good condition and baby potatoes that weren’t on the verge of spoiling, too. Guessing a local grocery isn’t selling as much of the higher priced produce now?

If I may make a suggestion— in my experience, the brand of jar that you get doesn’t matter, so get the cheapest Mainstays or Martha Stewart jars you can find.
HOWEVER. The brand of flat lid does matter, IMO. The cheaper brands have a much higher failure rate in my experience. I pretty much only use Ball and Kerr. Ball is gold standard, as is the Ball Blue Book (I can HIGHLY recommend their dill pickle spears recipe from the newest edition). Kerr lids are decent, though not QUITE as rock solid.
If you’re nervous about canning, I would recommend starting with water bath canning. Jellies and jams are dead easy and a great low-stakes intro into canning.
Good luck!

Absolutely do not use YouTube- way too many "rebel" canners with complete disregard for safety. r/canning uses scientifically tested recipes- their wiki has great resources.
NovelPermission634@reddit
And definitely be wary of where you get advice because rebel canning is out there thriving. You don't want to waste money and time on food because you can it improperly. The ball canning book is my go to.
LogicWizard22@reddit
Thanks! This is my concern with just googling a source. I want to make sure the food is 100% safe to eat.
Livid_Roof5193@reddit
Yeah there is an actual rebel canning sub on Reddit. I avoid that sub in general personally. The regular canning sub is pretty strict about following safe practices, and people will quickly call out stuff that is unsafe. They also recommend the Ball canning recipes as well.
LogicWizard22@reddit
Thx!
NovelPermission634@reddit
A big big part of canning also involves getting over the fear you did something wrong and actually eating your food. Take your time, remember to follow the steps and then when you look at your first beautiful jars of food you can convince yourself that they are safe because you did everything right.
Also a good jar opener is handy to have but having 5 on hand is even better because the 1st 4 disappear if you have kids.
Livid_Roof5193@reddit
I recommend the r/canning sub. They have lots of good information in that sub about safe and unsafe practices. People are also pretty helpful when you have questions.

You could consider using black tea to ween yourself off. Tea bags are light and compressible. They'll also taste better than instant coffee. The risk with instant coffee is that you use it as a replacement for your normal coffee, and when you run out you're in the exact same situation.

The house costs $13,500?!?
GunnCelt@reddit
On a half acre with septic in place. It was foreclosed on in January and the bank paid $22k at auction for it. I offered $12k and they countered with $13.5k.

Congrats on the additional land!

Ugh. On top of the known thrift stores, local ones are sometimes no better because the employees and volunteers take/hoard the good stuff. I learned that at a local hospital thrift shop, when an older woman volunteer came to help me unload my donations, she was so excited and "loved" everything. A couple of months later, I was in a local store that had dealer spaces. One of the spaces had tons of what I had donated, thinking I was going to help someone who was in need. Long story short, I found out that the particular dealer space was owned by the thrift store woman. So I began to donate to a free store. It went well at first, and I thought people in need with no money were benefitting 100% from donations. Silly me. I went to their website to look up hours and saw that volunteers could take one donated item for every hour they helped. I can't imagine they are taking anything but the best stuff. In the world we live in today, if that's the worst stuff going on, ok. But I really wanted to help people who are in *need* rather than in *want.* Now I donate to the local hospice thrift. Fingers crossed they actually help keep cost down for the hospice services.

If someone is working at a thrift store...they are most likely in need. If you wanted to give it away to someone who you can be sure of is down and out in the worst way, you could look on facebook for families or people in need.

I've had to reframe the way I think about my donations. I want the stuff out of my house, but I don't want it to end up in a landfill. So giving it to a thrift store at least gives it a chance of being reused by someone, even if that someone is a flipper and not necessarily in need. I acted in good faith, and I kept it out of the trash.

I just went to my local Goodwill store. I occasionally stop in there, even if I don't need anything in particular, because I live in a rich people area, and you can occasionally find insane things there. (One time, for example, I bought a brand-new Kate Spade purse for $10.)
There were a lot of people shopping, and not as much stuff available for purchase as usual, and what was available was not the usual high quality I've seen there in the past.
So...rich people are hanging onto their stuff longer, until it's much more worn, I guess?

Goodwill has started selling the hood stuff online. My Goodwill looks like a Dollar General that sells used Old Navy jeans for 19.99
trafficpylonfarmer@reddit
They are not just selling the good stuff online - it's an organized, centrally managed mandate to identify and pull higher value items for auction.

Mandatory overtime for me for the next few months at least, in an engineered to order manufacturing firm's machine shop.
Currently perusing higher mpg gently used vehicles with less computerized bells and whistles than modern vehicles. Probably trading in my 2024 20mpg suv next week for something more fuel efficient.
Local garden supply centers are elbow to elbow on this nice Saturday here in the NE US. Very mild spring so far, still haven't needed any a/c which is saving some money.
I looked for Red Feather canned butter online a few weeks ago to add to food storage. 100% sold out everywhere.
Anyhow, just my $. 02

I walk 7 or so miles per say in my financially struggling, New England small city. An acquaintance I see occasionally was packing up his stuff to move. This guy is mid fifties and has been living in this apartment for at least the 12 years I've been walking by. We talked and he told me he had just lost his SSDI, his section 8, and his food stamps, and that he was moving back in with his parents who are in their late 70s. I asked why he'd lost all his assistance and he said he didn't know. He added that he didn't get along with his parents, so it would be likely he'd be homeless in a few days.
This fellow appears able-bodied, but is developmentally disabled (retarded/behavioral issue?). I suspect he is a victim of the cuts the federal government has been making. He might be able to hold down a job bagging groceries... maybe. Or raking leaves.
Wrong_Organization29@reddit
There are letters going out to payees/caretakers where they are doing evaluations to see if the person is still disabled. If there is no response they are automatically dropped. The paperwork also asks about specific diagnosis and whether or not the person is in treatment AND who the doctor or agency is. Supposedly they do this every three to five years but this is the first time we ever got one. Thank DOGE for this.

Thanks for sharing, but please stop using the 'r' word - it's offensive to the developmentally challenged/disabled.
Playful_Possible_379@reddit
While correctly said. We should be focused on how to get that guy the help he needs. The poor fellow he mentioned. It could be a good case study for this community to actually help a fellow soul in dire need.

My guess is grouper guys. 40 days out in the gulf catching those buttery sea beasts.

But coming from Take My Fish, grouper would make sense too lol!
