Are trucks like the Maverick subject to the chicken tax?
If so, it would make sense for Toyota to build the hypothetical maverick competitor here.
Shmokesshweed@reddit
There is no Maverick competitor.
SonovaVondruke@reddit
There are so many in development that there has to be something else on the market by the time this factory is online. Toyota, Subaru, Stellantis, Kia, etc. all have something in the works, and they have the example of the Santa Cruz for what won’t sell.
Shmokesshweed@reddit
Problem is no one wants to squeeze their margins on midsize offerings even further. And Ford will offer even larger discounts on the Maverick if someone tries to compete even remotely on price.
CorrectCombination11@reddit
Iceman would like to argue that point.
andrewia@reddit
No, Mexico/Canada production is covered under USMCA (formerly NAFTA).
andrewjaekim@reddit
To clarify I meant the type of truck the maverick is. If it were to be built outside of NA would it be subject to the chicken tax?
Captain_Alaska@reddit
Anything with a bed is considered a pickup truck.
andrewia@reddit
Yes, frame type isn't the criteria. https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/subtitle-B/chapter-V/part-523 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_tax

For now.

TBH I’d rather have Mexicans building my Taco than union Americans
Pad_TyTy@reddit
Well you're in luck, Toyota is not unionized in the US, but it is in Japan. Go figure.
Lucky_Chainsaw@reddit
Don't they know that Toyota will be out of business by 2027 and they went all went all in on the hydrogen (1 model)!? Seriously.
ohnosevyn@reddit
lol you wish Toyota loves Mexico
KingMario05@reddit
It's the Taco. Toyota is clearly anticipating Mexican duties to be here to stay, and it sells too much to just eat the cost. (Even more so than the just-as-popular RAV4.) Back to Texas it comes, and that is where it'll probably come from going forward. Why risk it?
Shmokesshweed@reddit
Maybe. But their plan would be to start production a year or more after the current administration.
coastal_ghost08@reddit
As opposed to loudly filing paperwork for an expansion?
Baby-girl-54321@reddit
Either way, a $2 billion expansion is insane. "Project Orca" is a killer codename, too. Let's hope it actually pans out!
pdp10@reddit
Toyota Stout in the U.S. market? They wish.
5GCovidInjection@reddit
Yeah, bottom line is small vehicles don’t do well in America. I think the F-150 and Ranger still outsell the Maverick by some margin, despite both being more expensive.
