ULPT request - Uber drivers forcing you to cancel ride
Posted by fialhocakes@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 191 comments
Just arrived in MCO after midnight. Not one but two drivers dragged me along for almost a collective hour until I canceled the rides. One of them 'couldn't start his car' AND couldn't cancel the ride himself.. I knew this was a thing but trying to call support was impossible, no option given. Uber washes its hands saying I wasn't charged a cancelation fee. I want the hour of my life back.. lowlives.
What can I do about this? They play dirty and Uber doesn't lose, driver doesn't lose.. customer does.
sardonicmarvel@reddit
When uber drivers ask me to cancel and claim they “can’t do it from their end” I leave them hanging until they do and I just use Lyft. The drivers are lying and uber corporate is trash
ShesGotaChicken2Ride@reddit
Can confirm. I was an Über driver for a while and yes, we can cancel.
The caveat to that is this:
We get penalties for canceling rides, even if it’s a legit reason. So for example: I once had dropped a rider off. Next ride offered was 20 miles away for a 5-minute ride 1 or 2 miles long. It would’ve cost me more gas than I would’ve been paid for the ride, so I declined. If you decline too many rides, Über penalizes you. One penalty is they will take your ride details away. So for example: I’m a woman. I’m planning on doing one more ride for the night. They send me a ride 45 minutes away, and I don’t want to do that because it’s 45 minutes back home after I clock out. Über assholes send me the SAME ride offer 3x in a row. I reject it all 3 times. Now I’m penalized. They take away my ride details, so now, as a woman, it’s 2:00 a.m., I don’t know who I’m picking up or where TF I’m going. It’s total bullshit on Über’s part. They penalize you for having common sense. And yes, it doesn’t hurt YOU to cancel the ride, so if your driver is asking you to, you might be kind and do that because you won’t suffer any consequences but they will. Just a little insight.
mrshestia@reddit
This is completely unhinged and I know Uber is bad for drivers but wow that's insane. That being said, it doesn't come without any consequences for the rider if they cancel--they are forced to pay a fee. Just sh*tty corporation behavior. Going to use Lyft only from now on.
ShesGotaChicken2Ride@reddit
Oh wow I didn’t know that. It’s pretty fucked up. I’m thinking a class action is in order on both sides.
JounalMeThis@reddit
Wow that's insane!! As a woman, that's such a shady and potentially dangerous punishment for declining rides. Screw Uber
ShesGotaChicken2Ride@reddit
Mark my words it’ll be a class action lawsuit one day. I need to know who TF I’m picking up and where TF I’m going especially at 2 am
Hussar1241@reddit
Why not just contact uber customer service and show them screenshot of rider requesting you to cancel?
i_am_icarus_falling@reddit
I've tried contacting Uber eats customer service for small things, and they deliberately make the menu system very long and tedious. Lot of repetitive and redundant screens, finally got to a chat with someone and I had to repeat all that shit again, in the end they claimed to have resolved my problems and I never actually got the refund I was promised. There was no option to call anyone.
ShesGotaChicken2Ride@reddit
I had a rider request a ride for 200’. I was perplexed why he wouldn’t just walk. He said it was because he orders a ride the day before and left his phone in the car and was unable to get ahold of customer service, so he was hoping I could. I tried my best, but even as a driver I was unable. I even took his number down to his temporary phone and continued for an entire week to help him just to be nice. Never got ahold of customer service. Check in on him about 3 weeks later he never got his phone back. Over customer service is shit. Ever for drivers. One time I didn’t get paid for a 50 MILE RIDE. Then told them F it I’m canceling my next ride since you didn’t pay me for the last one! They penaltized me for canceling that ride and it took several days to be paid for the previous one. Uber is SHIT
Hussar1241@reddit
Gotta love weaponized incompetence. Vote with your wallet and dont use companies that treat you in that way.
I run a small business with less than 30 employees and we outperform many of these big firms with 3 CS staffers...
stuckinnowhereville@reddit
Lyft has been worse than uber where I am
ResidentRelevant13@reddit
Waymo is the way to go
stuckinnowhereville@reddit
I’ve only seen it in Vegas and it only goes to certain places. So not practical
CharlietheGreat@reddit
You’re getting ratioed because people associate them with AI and tech but you’re absolutely right. In LA they’re cheaper, easier, more available, cleaner, nicer and safer than any uber I’ve ever been in.
The bonus is not ordering an uber for your girlfriend with “Sarah” as a driver and having a 43 year old Dagestan man pull up.
thermal_shock@reddit
Uber was cheaper and cleaner in the beginning. Then they enshittified. Expect waymo issues when they enshittify too.
CharlietheGreat@reddit
Trust me I am absolutely expecting this down the pipeline.
The one thing keeping me hopeful is that even in their limited trial now, with an extremely limited number of cars, they still generally match the price of an uber. As the tech gets better, and more cars get on the road, I see two things happening:
A) They get even cheaper
B) Waymo becomes large enough that it starts to effect Alphabet stock, which means that Google would be motivated to maintain standards as to not potentially risk the rest of their empire being dragged down with it.
That being said, I’m an optimist lol. For the time being, I’ll enjoy being carted around in an electric, climate controlled jaguar being driven by a computer with extraordinarily polite driving sensibilities.
ambarcapoor@reddit
I was with you until the last part. Google had taken every company out bought that had anything good going for it and run it into the ground by canceling all the food features.
CharlietheGreat@reddit
That’s valid. Tbf I agree with you but I also see this as a massive arm of the AI integration concept that they have bet their asses on monetarily in the last few years. It’s one of the very public, very precedent setting logistical pieces of a complex and incredibly risky play into being primarily an AI company.
I guess we’ll see 🤷♂️
ambarcapoor@reddit
I don't mind being wrong...
AngryTrucker@reddit
I'd rather have a shitty human driver over tech that impedes ambulances.
soggymittens@reddit
You prefer your driver’s in the Philippines rather than in the car with you?
CharlietheGreat@reddit
Unironically yes. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve felt legitimately in danger from the driver themselves or the way they drive.
Also in my area they’re full autonomous for the vast majority of rides so that’s kind of a null point.
ResidentRelevant13@reddit
Yeah sometimes they’re so hostile for no reason
CharlietheGreat@reddit
It’s like they resent you for using the service that they choose to be an employee of.
It’s so incredibly odd to me. Probably the same mentality as fast food workers treating you like shit for having the audacity to get a burger.
ResidentRelevant13@reddit
Yeah I’ve had an uber driver turn on the heat and vibration on my seat and ask if I was a stripper (bc I had my phone plugged in and tpains im in love with a stripper was playing). And other uber drivers ask for my number and in general be a creep. And so many uber driver’s cars smell like cigarette smoke. I know there’s women only driver options but sometimes it takes too long. I have many reasons to prefer Waymo for now.
MarleysGhost2024@reddit
Unless they glitch and all go to a random cul-de-sac and circle for hours.
Distribution-Radiant@reddit
In Austin and Atlanta, Waymo is summoned via Uber.
m0n3ym4n@reddit
This. Just reply “I’ll use Lyft and you can figure out how to cancel”
1quirky1@reddit
Enshittification strikes again.
Take a taxi or Lyft and make them cancel.
Bonus, If they start heading towards pickup you can cancel stating that you waited without them moving or canceling.
Possible_Move7894@reddit
it's not enshittification, it's third-worlders who come from cultures where this behavior is normal.
NashvilleHillRunner@reddit
You got downvoted because Reddit, but you’re 💯% correct.
thermal_shock@reddit
It's dowvoted because it's wrong, it's definition text book enshittification.
i_am_icarus_falling@reddit
Wouldn't that imply it was something much better that had something deliberately taken away to become enshitified? It's always been this way.
thermal_shock@reddit
no, uber was great when it first started. cheap rides, quick, wasn't oversaturated. i've never had what OP mentioned happen to me, but i don't ride often.
now it's all about scams they won't investigate to stop, price spikes, shit quality. they've removed everything they started out as now that users are hooked and they have your money.
to me it's been enshittified.
Possible_Move7894@reddit
I fully expected it, but yeah the number of actual American Uber drivers I've gotten is probably like 7 - ever
Remote_Nectarine9659@reddit
Oh are you doing “actual American” discourse but still pretending to not be a massive racist? Cool cool cool
CharlietheGreat@reddit
I mean the dude is not wrong. Immigrants are real Americans and he’s wrong on that but if you’ve ever taken taxis in foreign countries you’d understand that scammy/sketchy behavior is normalized in a lot of less developed places. Especially with taxi drivers and people they consider ‘foreigners’.
With that being said, I would say on average, 1 out of every 10 drivers I get actually speaks English. Most of them are clearly new immigrants, primarily from the Middle East. Uber is an easy platform for people without proper documentation to make a living.
I will definitely get downvoted for this but I hope you realize before you do that everything I stated above is just factually correct and I’m making 0 judgements on the drivers themselves.
alextoria@reddit
i’m mostly surprised that most people here are mostly getting non english speaking drivers. i literally live in LA (ok LA county but i have ubered in the city proper a lot) and it’s rare i get someone who doesn’t speak english. maybe 1 in 10 but i honestly think less than that. idk maybe i’m not paying enough attention.
nojustnoperightonout@reddit
the few times ive needed an uber, bc airport, its been someone getting dropped off and thats the only one around, and the guy (not all but always one) says watch it that guy doesnt speak English you shouldnt ride with him, and the driver is cool, just not taking crap from an entitled douchecanoe
CharlietheGreat@reddit
Damn brother we must be on opposite algos then LOL
I’m in the same county as you. I’d say 4/10 will be Armenian or another Eastern European ethnicity and speak very little English, 2/10 will be Asian and speak very little English, and 3/10 will be Hispanic and speak little English.
Now…if I were a non-white uber driver, I would likely pretend I spoke little English to avoid engaging in conversation. That could very well be what’s happening. I also know that the county is pretty segregated so I’m sure it is greatly affected by where you live in LA
Remote_Nectarine9659@reddit
"you’d understand that scammy/sketchy behavior is normalized in a lot of less developed places."
By normalized - you mean like, those shithole countries would elect a 34-times convicted felon-grifter-rapist as their leader? Like, a leaders of one of those countries might sell pardons and accept bribes, and try to make their families wealthy as well as themselves? Like, members of the legislative bodies of those countries routinely do insider trading, which they've legalized only for themselves? Normalized like that, you mean? Or do you mean normalized like having more than twice the per capita rate of theft that the US has? Maybe that's what you mean, referring specifically to the less-developed countries of Sweden and Denmark [1] . Or do you mean normalized like $50 billion in wage theft a year, by employers from their employees, dwarfing any other kind of property crime in that less-developed country? [2]
And speaking of which, by less-developed - you mean like countries with totally broken social safety nets such that even fully employed people are unhoused? Like, countries in which there is no universal healthcare access, such that people die from preventable and treatable diseases all the time, and medical bankruptcy is common? Like, countries that spend tons of money on their military instead of funding their public schools, countries in which children routinely go hungry? Is that what you mean by less-developed?
The thing about trying to defend obviously racist claims with "well but the racist claims here are 'factually correct'" is that you are also going to wind up looking racist as hell, too.

CharlietheGreat@reddit
They keep deleting my reply because apparently I can’t say 47’s actual name here
First of all, chill the fuck out. “WEST IS BAD TOO” is not a counterargument to what I said. And yes, the current administration has absolutely normalized a culture of grifting. Just like how less developed countries dealing with major corruption have had the same thing happen 🤦 thank you for proving my point
I fully agree with you that wage theft is a bigger issue. I despise the current administration. That’s not what we were talking about here. Focus up buttercup.
I am also someone who has traveled plenty, experienced a number of cultures, have friends from a myriad of both more and less developed countries, and have spoken at LENGTH to them about these topics. I lived with 3 fresh immigrants from Mumbai for literally years dude. Seriously, stop arguing from an assumptive standpoint. It makes you look ignorant.
You dove straight into identity politics without realizing we likely vote in lockstep and agree on 99% of topics. That’s not a serious or influential way to make an argument. My personal, well earned and well lived experience has led me to my viewpoints. You don’t have to agree with them, but chill the fuck out with the rage and immediate virtue signaling. I’m not engaging with you any more because you are clearly not here for anything productive
Remote_Nectarine9659@reddit
“WEST IS BAD TOO” is not a counterargument to what I said.
Since the argument you were making was very clearly that less-developed countries are culturally different than the US in ways that matter to the larger discussion of why Uber drivers from those countries are so grift-prone, it is precisely a counterargument to point out that those countries are not culturally different than the US.
But anyway, sure: take your ball and go home.
CharlietheGreat@reddit
There is absolutely a massive difference between the culture of grifting in America VS the culture of grifting in some of the poorest corners of a place like India or North Africa. You know this, I know this, but only one of us is being honest with ourselves here. There’s a reason that nearly every spam call center exists in a single pocket of the world. There’s a reason why most scam accounts are traced back to the African continent.
You can sit there and pretend to be a self proclaimed moral harbinger of good all you want. If that’s what you’ve built your identity around, I won’t tear you down for it. I’m taking my ball and going home because you’ve made it clear that you likely don’t have much life experience, have formed a number of your opinions from the internet, and have 0 interests in anything other than throwing shame towards others to get your warm fuzzies. You can’t exist as a non-serious individual and expect other people to take you seriously.
Bye now!
Remote_Nectarine9659@reddit
I thought I wasn’t here for anything productive, babe, why are you still responding?
CharlietheGreat@reddit
I ain’t reading all that dude. Get a personality that isn’t just hating America.

roadfood@reddit
Sounds like an Uber problem, not an immigrant problem.
CharlietheGreat@reddit
It absolutely is an Uber problem with not having better standards/properly vetting their drivers. Hence why I made a point to mention that I am making 0 judgements on the drivers themselves.
However, to the point of the guy above, there are plenty of immigrants who come here with a subculture of being told that America/Americans are rich and that scamming them is ok. This culture becomes blatantly apparent when you step foot into any less developed country or try to render services in them. People who are calling that a racist statement are people who clearly have not actually spent the time to travel and experience the cultures they are so vehemently defendingz

If corporate won't cleanup their shitty drivers, it absolutely is enshittification. They don't care about you. Once they got your money, fuck you.
i_am_icarus_falling@reddit
It isn't anywhere close to a typical corporate structure. These aren't even considered employees. Corporate provides the software/access portal between you and the subcontracted driver. They facilitate the transfer of money and communication.
zf420@reddit
That's part of the enshittification. The corporation just claims "We can't control them, they're private contractors!" as an excuse for poor service.
GoSyncro@reddit
Yes, because American behaviors are such a beacon of righteousness and integrity.
KrofftSurvivor@reddit
It's Uber driver culture don't pretend it's about one place
Possible_Move7894@reddit
And who comprises the majority of Uber drivers?
paranoidbillionaire@reddit
Show your work, racist.
DankKoolaidMan@reddit
And you’re perfectly okay with uber not having “higher standards” so they don’t hire these “third-worlders?”
A company doesn’t have to hire everyone who applies you know, they choose to do so.
mimic@reddit
You’re also enshittifying our lives with your bigotry
jmerrilee@reddit
Never cancel, it's a scam they use so they can still get their fee and you are the one who gets charged. Force them to cancel every single time, this applies with doordash, airbnb, etc. I'd find a different ride share service if the one you have has a AH that's locking you into a ride they have no intention of doing.
Charming_Spinach_362@reddit
is it still a thing that if you cancel before the 5 minute mark you are not charged if their car hasn't moved? I used to take uber daily x2. Some really bad drivers where I was.
VoidWalker4Lyfe@reddit
Waiting an hour for a $5 cancellation fee is just stupid. They'd make a lot more just doing the ride.
Upsiderhead@reddit
Ya, but they're probably just sitting at home doing it.
poop_report@reddit
It's a decent living if you're doing this with 5 or 10 accounts simultaneously.
VoidWalker4Lyfe@reddit
I really don't understand how it's possible for people to do this. I'm a former Uber driver and you have to upload pics of your license, insurance, registration, several pictures of your car, and a pic of your face. They verify your identity and do a background check. I've heard about people stealing or buying other people's accounts, but idk how that works.
FishyKeebs@reddit
Stolen or sold identities.
This is ancient(2019) but enumerates the point https://www.nbcboston.com/news/local/19-charged-in-ride-hailing-fake-driver-account-scheme/2375154/
VoidWalker4Lyfe@reddit
Thanks for the link. That's fucked up. My driver account has been inactive for several years now but I got an email from Uber a few weeks ago saying that my login attempts failed, so I reported it. Someone must have been trying to do just that
poop_report@reddit
They simply buy accounts from someone else.
kalichimichanga@reddit
Where I live, the DoorDash dashers do this a LOT. Such a scam.

PhilMeUpBaby@reddit
Just message them back, "my cousin works for Uber and said that I shouldn't cancel on my end... She wants to know what your name is..."
KingHarambeRIP@reddit
This sounds like it’d be as effective as “my girlfriend goes to another school” and “my dad works for Xbox”.
Nephroidofdoom@reddit
Nice! I would go with:
“My cousin works for Uber corporate and said I shouldn’t cancel on my end… I took a screenshot of your name… should I send it to her?”
SuitableExercise7096@reddit
I drive for uber....This would work on me lol
hunterbuilder@reddit
Do you no-show and force cancellations?
YNOT180@reddit
Fed up with this as well. Recently landed in Des Moines, ride accepted but not moving closer or responding to messages. Jumped in a yellow cab and just let the ride hang. Dude eventually cancelled while on my merry way. Small justice but satisfying nonetheless.
skeletons_asshole@reddit
Had a similar experience recently in Des Moines trying to drop off a rental car and get a ride back to my semi. I’ll have to just grab a yellow cab next time, weirdly forgot those were an option.
RivenRise@reddit
There's also the other ride sharing app that's around. I forgot the name i think it starts with a Y.

PSA:
Taxis from the airport are often cheaper, and rarely so much more expensive that it’s worth fucking with uber! I travel frequently and Uber and Lyft are within a few dollars of the airport cabs, and lately the cabs are cheaper.
I’m going to wait for another year or two before I try ride share again and just take taxis from the airport.
L1mpD@reddit
Yeah this is why you also need Lyft on your phone. 70% of the time it is cheaper and then whenever somebody pulls that nonsense I pull up Lyft (or uber whichever I wasn’t using) and order a car from that and never cancel
OverwatchChemist@reddit
And the only time I have ever had a lyft driver leave me hanging was cause the dude was trying to find a bathroom and i was like go piss girl i can wait
borris_Z_finkasaurus@reddit
This exact experience is what got me back to using cabs almost exclusively
BreakfastTequila@reddit
I had an uber driver do that to me and I took a Lyft. Uber guy finally cancelled after four hours.
Diqt@reddit
Oh I did exactly this. I also called him over and over for about 10 minutes, then he canceled. It felt great.
ihadagoodone@reddit
This is why taxi's are regulated. Expect Uber to be like taxi's, talk to your representatives to get Uber/drivers follow the same regulations as taxi's.
Sure_Acanthaceae_348@reddit
ELI5 - why do they cancel the ride?
I use Lyft and I’m wondering if they do the same thing with that.
norf9@reddit
In our airport drivers are in a queue when they arrive. If they cancel the ride, they go to the back of the line. So if you are requesting a ride to where they don't want to go, they do this nonsense to try to get you to cancel
Sure_Acanthaceae_348@reddit
Ugh... they're going to make taxis great again.
Nephroidofdoom@reddit
Honestly in a lot of cities, like NYC, taxi’s are becoming my preferred option.
All the things that Uber used to help me avoid, gross unsafe cars, rude drivers are actually no better than cabs these days.
At least with yellow cabs you know they are regulated.
It’s like we’ve come full circle.
FishermanOk6844@reddit
That's my experience in Miami. I travel monthly for work, usually very short trips. I'll pre-schedule an uber/lyft pickup to the airport, but for the last year or so, jump in a yellow cab to get home. Ride share pickups at MIA are now extremely unreliable. Half the time they don't seem to know how to enter or exit the airport properly. I'm either watching them on my phone circling around the departures level when I told them I was at arrivals, or I'm in their car while they're missing turns, taking the wrong route, etc.. At least cab drivers know the roads & aren't completely map app dependent.
Stickning@reddit
I'll always take a cab if I'm in Manhattan, but from JFK, only a Lyft. Every cab I've taken from JFK has taken ridiculous, circuitous routes to expand the fare, it's infuriating.
ShowerBeer-@reddit
JFK to manhattan is flat fare plus tolls

HyperactivePandah@reddit
The fact that Uber let's that happen with any regularity is INSANE.
The fact that it happens enough that it seems these fucking scumbags are doing it intentionally all the time...?
What the fuck is Uber even doing?
toasterstruddle@reddit
They're not going to do a goddamn thing.
You mean to tell me there's free money on the table AND Uber can bloat their fleet (drivers) numbers up? Seems like a bug that became a feature to me.
Couscousfan07@reddit
They do it intentionally. It’s free money to them. And Uber won’t resolve it. So the drivers are just responding to incentive.
HyperactivePandah@reddit
How is it free money to them if the drivers aren't picking up the fares hut still collect fees...?
Oh wait, the customer pays the fees if they are the ones to cancel...
Yeah, that would be an instant charge back.
nikdahl@reddit
Any company that you charge back will close your account and essentially ban you from the service.
HyperactivePandah@reddit
Nice, save me the trouble of canceling.
Sk1rm1sh@reddit
Dont they close your account if you do that?
Sherifftruman@reddit
Sometimes they are running other apps like Lyft or DoorDash
Sure_Acanthaceae_348@reddit
So they don’t let the passengers leave until they cancel the ride? Isn’t that false imprisonment?
Couscousfan07@reddit
Driver accepts the ride in the app but never goes to pickup the customer. Customer gets frustrated and cancels. Drivers gets paid a cancellation fee.
Sure_Acanthaceae_348@reddit
Oh OK. The way people were talking I thought the passengers were in the cars.
Thisbestbegood@reddit
No, they just never pick the person up so another driver isn't getting it assigned and the passenger isn't getting their ride.
stuckinnowhereville@reddit
Lyft definitely does it too
nyetloki@reddit
If they cancel it hurts their stats, can lead to time outs, lowered priority and pay. If you cancel it can lead to them getting some pay because you could get hit with a fee
Sure_Acanthaceae_348@reddit
Oh, I am never going to pay a fee for a service I do not get, so I will never cancel. I'll just open the other app and take my chances, or use a cab.
Puceeffoc@reddit
Then they'll locked in until they cancel right?
ammh114-@reddit
I frequently uber to and from MCO and the touristy areas in orlando and have for the last 4 years or so. God the drivers have gotten bad lately.
FishermanOk6844@reddit
Same in Miami. I take uber or lyft to the airport, but I stopped attempting to take one from MIA to my home about a year ago after so many delayed cancellations. Plus the drivers' knowledge of Miami & Miami Beach traffic & roads is very hit or miss. Yellow cabs are almost always more expensive for the route I take, but definitely more reliable.
IDooDoodAtTheMasters@reddit

MisterMoogle03@reddit
A lot of drivers, like myself, will let riders assume we don’t know English so we don’t have to have conversations with pricks. After driving so many personalities, it only takes the introduction to make the assessment.

Until enshittification hits this too. Then there will be fleets of these things using AI to outscrew the human Uber drivers trying to screw us over. In my mind im picturing the enormous pile of yellow cabs at LGA waiting for their turn... only its robotaxis and they arent moving, ever, just steadily vacuuming up cancelation fees...
Nephroidofdoom@reddit
This. If you’ve ever taken a Waymo. My god, it’s so good.
throwRA_StraightDust@reddit
I don’t cancel. Luckily this only happened twice when I was trying to pick my car back up from the dealership. They said to cancel because it would take them a long time to get to me. I said, no worries. I’ll be here all night or anytime tomorrow is also good. After an hour, they cancelled. Next driver did it too
JustinHoMi@reddit
Had this happen before. Also had a restaurant refuse to cancel an order that they were not planning on fulfilling. At least 5 drivers tried to pick up the order before I just cancelled it.
PlanetoftheAtheists@reddit
I was in Paris at 11pm. Freezing cold with my wife. I saw his car on the map getting close. Then he'd make a hard turn backing the opposite direction. He did this four times, hoping I'd cancel. But i didn't. I knew what he was up to. He finally showed up, deliberately parked far away, we had to walk clear across Place De Concorde. When I got in and confronted his tardiness, he claimed not to speak English. He was also on the phone, apparently being chewed out by his wife. The entire trip he was grunting affirmations into his earpiece.
My diligence in waiting in the cold paid off with the one star review I left him which is now part of his record.

Ahhhhh!!! Thank you for your post! This same thing happened to me in NY at the bus station but i didn't know what the driver was doing. I cancelled the ride. Your story just jogged my memory!
Anxious-One-2365@reddit
Try Lyft
JayMoots@reddit
I don't understand.... why don't they want the fare?
SimplyExtremist@reddit
Screenshot the conversation send them the screenshot then let it sit open until they cancel it. Grab a cab and move on with my life
No1uvConsequence@reddit
I need more to understand how this will help!
SimplyExtremist@reddit
Picture is for the ride share company if they report you as a rider. Getting a cab is so I get where I need to be. Leaving the ride open is so they are forced to cancel it on their end. Hope this helps.
No1uvConsequence@reddit
Perfect! Thank you 🙏

Nothing. What do you expect you should get for this. Your entitlement is un real
MuchThrowawayWow26@reddit
Open another ride sharing app lmao. Waste his timd
Hussar1241@reddit
Why not just contact uber customer service and show them screenshot of rider requesting you to cancel?
RogerRabbot@reddit
Dont use ride share apps. If there is a sharp decline in riders they'll have to do something to earn them back.
You ordering another Uber 2 days later tells the company youre totally fine with the status quo.
jaywaykil@reddit
At MCO? Use a traditional taxi. Cheaper, faster, better in almost every way than Uber or Lyft.
Onautopilotsendhelp@reddit
Yeah this is why I have Lyft and Uber on my phone. If you dont show, figure it the fuck out and cancel.
good_choice13@reddit
LYFT
kramela@reddit
Use the pin option they can't start the ride unless they have it.
Virtual_Camera3959@reddit
You can take old fashioned taxis or ask someone you know to drive you around.
la_winky@reddit
I only use Lyft. Never had an issue with them.
Hashtag_buttstuff@reddit
I will eat a $5 cancelation fee to spite a driver acting like this.
TheNonCredibleHulk@reddit
That's what they're trying to get you to do
somethingwyqued@reddit
As a former Uber driver, it’s not about a cancellation fee. Uber got wise about that. It’s about acceptance level. You lose certain in app perks if your acceptance level drops. So they contact the rider with a BS excuse because they took the ride to keep an acceptance level, and then “can’t cancel” because there’s a cancellation level. When riders are charged a cancelation fee, that goes to Uber proper, not the driver if they’ve made 0 progress after 2 minutes.
AS a former Uber driver…let them hang to force them to cancel and use Lyft.
somethingwyqued@reddit
The other time this happens a lot is if a driver is sitting in a surge zone. They happen so rarely these days for drivers, although riders are charge surges often…(again, all that money goes back to Uber company, and not the driver). So if a driver is in a surge zone and gets a request from OUTSIDE that zone, many regions (because each market region has their own city and state laws Uber has to abide by) won’t give them the surge because the pickup is outside the zone. So they message/call with some kind of excuse that makes YOU cancel, because if THEY cancel they’ll lose access to the surge they’re sitting in.
PerniciousVim@reddit
Right. And now Uber is getting into hotels and vacation rentals, with this standard of customer advocacy. Truly one of the worst companies to give your money to.
Trillian_B@reddit
Get a car service in advance. Living well is the best revenge.
Mother-Pride-Fest@reddit
What do you mean by "dragged me along" and "One of them 'couldn't start his car'"? If you're already in the car, you have the right to leave the car no matter what. Uber drivers are lying when they tell you they can't cancel the ride, they just get bonuses for having a low cancellation rate so they don't want to.
MightyLlaaama@reddit
This happened to me once while I was trying to get to the airport. I was on a time constraint and I think driver knew that. Kept on telling me excuse after excuse why he was late, on his way, couldn’t cancel, etc. I ended up having my husband call one for me from his phone. Once he saw my little dot moving on the map he contacted me to cancel and I said I won’t cancel. And then he cursed me out.
Few_Move_4594@reddit
I had a driver try to pull this because I had construction on my street but I had messaged them earlier to approach from the other direction. Had an annoying back and forth before they cancelled. Eat shit I'm not paying you for nothing and I was late for an important appointment.
phard003@reddit
This happens all the time where a driver won't move for like 5-10 minutes before starting their journey. I assume they accepted a ride while finishing up a meal or something. Like why accept a ride if you're not ready. Anyway, I just open up another Uber request. You can do this while an existing request is being completed but you just have to use another number like youre calling an Uber for a friend. While I'm on the way with the 2nd Uber who did their job properly, I just leave the original open so the original driver can't take any other bookings. Once they are about a block away, I cancel that oringal booking but not before letting them know why they're an idiot. If the wanna waste my time, I'll waste more of theirs.
Rubycon_@reddit
Doesn't it charge you though?
phard003@reddit
If it does, you're getting charged for the cancellation whether it happens at the time of you getting pissed off or at the time of them being close. The fee you want to avoid is the wait fee after they have arrived which is why you cancel a few blocks before they arrive.
Darthmotheus@reddit
I don't know if this is eveywhere, but where i am, after 5 min and the driver not getting closer to you, there is am option to find another driver without having to cancel
Rubycon_@reddit
It's not even 5 minutes. I ordered a ride and it said they would drop me off at a certain time, then they 'matched' me with someone 10 minutes away. I was like hell no because I was in a hurry so I went to unmatch within a minute or so and it charged me
Ghrrum@reddit
So two avenues of approach here depending on situation and disposition.
If you're male and in The SE US, open carry is a thing is a lot of states are cool with. People act different around guns.
If you're just after vengeance? Find some minor property damage and tell the cops their plate number and car description did it.

Lyft
gatvolkak@reddit
At airports, they check in and get placed in a queue, to get matched to drivers. They don't get the option to accept or reject riders like they do elsewhere. After waiting a while, some drivers feel entitled to a longer ride/ higher fee. I live near the airport so it would happen to me constantly
asskickinlibrarian@reddit
I use the book ahead feature for flights there and have had people waiting for me. No issues.
