Kyiv mourns as death toll from Russian attack in the Ukrainian capital rises to 24

Shortly after, Ukrainian drones set the Ryazan refinery, Russia's third largest, ablaze.
I get that drones are cheap and manufacturing capacity is vast, but surely there's more impactful targets to hit than residential buildings in the capital. Unless they really think it'll be easier to demoralize Ukraine than to make gains on the battlefield?
inokentii@reddit
The only goal for russians in this war is to get rid of Ukraine and Ukrainians and for this goal nothing is more impactful than striking residential buildings, schools and hospitals
Lowered12@reddit
I never really understood why people say things like this.... Isn't it obvious that a jammed/shoot down drones just fell down on it and it wasn't on purpose?
It obviously also happens to Ukraine too so what are they also trying to demoralize Russia because they can't make gains on battlefield? or suddenly it doesn't work that way
Chipay@reddit
There weren't drones but cruise missiles, a drone falling on a flat doesn't cause the entire building to collapse.

Residential targets are amongst the most impactful targets. Having a whole population in constant fear lowers productivity and incentives them to leave the country completely.
In the end war is about economics. The population has to get food, basic services and produce war machinery like drones or bullets, shells etc.
That’s why Ukraine strikes the oil depots so heavily. It has the advantage of a huge economic impact without having to terrorize the civil population
Ok_Currency_617@reddit
Realistically that's probably exactly the reason. The East is generally not that important to Ukranians, most of the territory that was taken (not considering stuff held from 2014) was farmland or smaller cities/towns besides some of the coastal cities. In the first few months of the war if Zelensky agreed to peace with Russia gaining territory he'd have been hanged. Now after years of war and bombing, people are tired, they are much more open to it.
KronusTempus@reddit
That’s a wild take. The east is not only where pretty much all of the most productive farmland is, but also where the vast majority of the resources like coal, lithium, rare earths, uranium etc… are.
Western Ukraine is resource poor and not as industrialized as the east.
Jersey_2019@reddit
Also didn't they discover oil or something near the coast too in eastern part

Footage of Ukrainian firefighters digging civilians out of a collapsed apartment block in Kyiv after it was hit by a Russian ballistic missile: https://v.redd.it/hxfu3fvoh91h1
From the article:
Chroma_primus@reddit
It's the petty revenge of putin because ge showed weakness by agreeing to a ceasfire. Now he vas to bombard civilians again to assert his dominance.
GrAdmThrwn@reddit
Yeah...agreed. Which is also a concerning indicator, given the Russians must have a massive surplus of missiles and drones if they can not only afford to prevent the Ukrainians from collecting Russian dead for equivalent body exchanges, but also enough that they can allocate a few here and there for Putin's petty terror attacks.
KronusTempus@reddit
He…called for the ceasefire weeks in advance for that specific timeframe for a specific event he wanted to hold….and somehow him agreeing to his own proposed ceasefire is weakness?
You European true believers live in a world that’s entirely separate from reality, it’s kinda wild to watch the mass psychosis from the outside. It’s almost as bad as the MAGA diehards.
*For context, I’m European myself, from a small country but have lived in many different countries over the years so I got exposed to a lot of different viewpoints.
Chroma_primus@reddit
Yes same as zelensky thats why it was not just one day but three days.
By tge way how did you like the first parade ib twenty years without rockets or tanks because they are needed on the frontline.
KronusTempus@reddit
Zelenskyy asked for his own ceasefire with a different date AFTER Putin declared that he wants a ceasefire to hold a parade so that he can maintain some sort of control over the narrative.
Zelensky asked for May 5-6 and that was completely ignored. Putin asked for one on May 9-11 and got it because Trump got involved.
Didn’t watch it, I don’t really care for military parades.
Chroma_primus@reddit
Putin only asked for May 9 and zelebsky got the extebtion from what i heard and that putin has to run crying to the americans to enforce this ceasfire speaks for itself.
KronusTempus@reddit
The delusion grows deeper. Trump inserted himself into it because Putin threatened to flatten Ukraines capital if Zelensky didn’t abide by the ceasefire. Zelensky then pretended to have been persuaded by other “concerned third countries” as he put it.
This stuff is readily available on every major news site. This is why Europe is in the shit and isn’t getting out anytime soon. The stories you tell yourselves are so different from reality that you never end up realizing just how bad things are and what you can do about it.
Chroma_primus@reddit
Trump inserted himself vrcause he adores strong authoritarians like putin and has achieved almost nothing.
I'm more impressed that you belive after 4 years of the two weeks special opertion russia has the capacity to flatten kiew.

KronusTempus@reddit
Do you hear yourself? Are you doubting whether the world’s largest nuclear power could flatten Kyiv if it chooses to?
It’s like talking to my grandmother with Alzheimer’s. You live in your own little world where things make sense to you while everybody else thinks you’re demented.
Chroma_primus@reddit
Yes since the start of the war they have treatend to use nukes but have never used them because the diplomatic fallout and the the reall nuclear fallout would both be problematic.
But i guess the narrative that russia heroicly holds vack vecause they don't use nukes is far more comforting for you.
KronusTempus@reddit
No no, you don’t get completely ignore what you just said.
What you said was:
Nobody is so poorly informed as to seriously make that argument…or so I thought until today.
Chroma_primus@reddit
I mean kiew still stands and putin had to beg for a cesfire to feel save holding his little parade i guess you win the argument if he decides to use nukes and destroyes the country hes been trying to cobauer for generations.
Jersey_2019@reddit
Also they think they are centre of the world and global south must worry about Ukraine conflict lol as if we don't have other imp issues to worry
polymute@reddit (OP)
If you are from the global south these might interest you. If you are Russian, too.
So Russia has been press ganging Central Asian migrants into the war, scamming Africans into being unwilling mercenaries. Russia is running out of people who are not from the protected class of city-dweller ethnic Russians. The protected class. With their Geelys and shopping centers. That Putin cannot afford to alienate. Autocracies are opaque. We didn't see the Arab Spring coming, did we.
Al Jazeera: ‘Sent to be killed’: How Russia forces migrants to fight in Ukraine
Anadolu Ajansi: 19 Kenyans killed fighting Russia’s war in Ukraine: Foreign minister
I could go on.
Russia is losing more man since they are trying to attack into a meatgrinder with failed tactics as outlined int my original article that I posted for this thread or the NYT one in my top comment. Another NYT article for sourcing: Russia Has Lost More Than 350,000 Soldiers, New Estimate Finds. The number raises the prospect that about half a million soldiers in total have died on the Russian and Ukrainian sides.
Jersey_2019@reddit
This is also unacceptable, all countries must ban its citizens to going to Russia but still it’s not centre of the world , it’s another European conflict
theoreoman@reddit
While Russia bombs civilian targets Ukraine keeps bombing military and industrial targets.
There's going to be a point where Russia just runs out of everything
Main_Following1881@reddit
Russia makes insane ammounts of missiles a year, i mean they have literally have the 3rd highest military budget in the world.
FRIENDLY_FBI_AGENT_@reddit
But... Ukraine also struck a residential building...?
IDespiseAllWeebs@reddit
So far 15 thousand civilians in Ukraine have died during the war, 90% of these losses are because of indiscriminate drone and missile strikes on residential buildings. In comparison about a thousand Russian civilians have died, most in strikes on industrial plants and military installations.
There’s a difference between consistently and systematically striking residential buildings and destroying civilian infrastructure to cause fear, and civilian casualties as collateral damage when striking military targets.
