What can I do about heavy delays in my child’s first British passport, applying from abroad?

Apply for an emergency passport at the embassy (not sure if you can do that with first passports though).
Apply for a certificate of entitlement if your child has another passport (expensive though).

If you need a passport desperately you simply fly to UK go to the passport office with your 1 day appointment and pick it up. I did it a few times as an expat.
If you cannot afford or cannot do this then you are at the vagaries of the system and just have to wait as they don't care if you didn't pay for express!

Interesting I didn’t know this. Unsure if it will be different for a first time passport but I’ll look into it. Thank you!

There's nothing you can do apart from wait.
Why did you not get her a passport before? Does she not have any other passport?

She was born in October. Bureaucracy in this country is awful and it took a while to get the documents sorted, so December was very much the earliest we could have applied.
