Got fired this morning

Got fired for cellphone use this morning… I’m only 22 yrs old & I only had my cdl since July2025
Where do I go from here?
Temporary_Big8747@reddit
Driver facing cameras caught you or did Johnny Law catch you? If company cameras, it won't be on your record. If law enforcement caught you, yeah.. good luck finding something else because it'll show on your MVR. Hopefully you learned a lesson tho. Cell phone crap isn't worth it. Too many people get complacent thinking it won't happen to them until they kill someone.
Much_Reception8826@reddit
Like that 8 seconds video that all the companies show at orientation...
WallaWallaby011@reddit
Lmaooo RIGHT!? That fucking camera is gonna go off if it sees you holding a cell phone! How stupid do you gotta be!?!? My camera doesn't go off even when I'm eating or drinking while driving, but I know not to hold or touch my phone when I'm going over 5 mph. This girl needs her job!
qaf0v4vc0lj6@reddit
The trigger events for those cameras are company dependent. The company is the one that controls the threshold for an event. The company I’m at now has an extremely high threshold, so only holding the phone to your ear triggers it. Looking at your phone on the dash does not.
My understanding is that one of the megas has it set so just the presence of a cell phone, mounted or otherwise, triggers an event.
Mindes13@reddit
Which mega?
qaf0v4vc0lj6@reddit
I don’t remember now, I want to say Schneider but I could be wrong.
Mindes13@reddit
I know Schneider is looking to have all driver having in next 2 years.
I don't have one yet and haven't heard how strict they are
Equivalent_Holiday15@reddit
Two were caught with phones in their hand by new ai camera. One driver got fired before his one year anniversary, another was put in probation period he was multi year driver
ChrisA575@reddit
From the drivers I talked with the camera isn’t a big deal but the only downside is you can’t use a headset because it will pick that up. One driver told me he uses speaker phone and the other uses meta glasses.
Lopsided_Beautiful_1@reddit
When I was Schneider they were stricter about the cellphone use, couldn’t use it at all not even mounted, it had to be put away. Get caught with it, automatic termination. But while I was working for them , they had 2 cameras on each side of the truck and one facing the road but not inside the cab, right when I left, they started introducing a new camera that included driver facing cams.
WallaWallaby011@reddit
Ours is AI controlled. I actually like it. It's only went off on me once when I accidentally turned my engine break on while bobtailing instead of using my wipers 😂🤣. Coming from a MAC... Freightliners are different I'm every way lol. It doesn't even go off if I need to unscrew my water bottle. Yes I forget sometimes lol. I have bad ADD 🥲
Money_Bag9370@reddit
Wait, they don’t allow you to engine break while bobtail?
WallaWallaby011@reddit
It triggered a hash breaking warning and my camera went off... It jerked me forward 😂🤣. I was already breaking when I accidentally pushed the engine break stalk all the way down lol.
Fellthefox@reddit
Swift will fire you for being on a video call even if it's hands free attached to the dash mount
Hard-Coconut-@reddit
yes!!! that camera goes NUTS over a phone. not a peep for food and drink. It did go off that same way when i was digging in s bag for some Pepto for too long. and once i just repositioned my phone and it went off. i was like WTF! i just dont go near it. not worth losing a good job.
WallaWallaby011@reddit
Same 😂. I don't go near the thing!
RowbowCop138@reddit
At my last company I tested it and held my hand to my head like I was on the phone.
It dinged me for distracted driving and using my phone.
No phone was in my hand.
trashbasketlullabies@reddit
I work in dispatch and at the company i'm at, we don't have the driver facing cameras activated, only the front/road facing. We have fired drivers for cell phone usage...because of the reflection of the phone in the windshield. I've seen the videos myself and those windshields really do reflect. Saw one video where a driver was obviously on facebook.
keytiri@reddit
My company doesn’t have driver facing cameras, but they also mentioned the reflection thing.
GigabitISDN@reddit
I just do not understand how some drivers haven't learned this.
Some no-name was bumbling down 81 (near 80, so you know what a cluster that already is) doing 40 in a 65, bouncing from line to line. When I finally passed, this bumblefuck looked up at me, phone in hand, with just the straight up stupidest expression I have ever seen in my entire life.
I lost what few remaining IQ points I have just thinking about his expression.
Robo_hippo@reddit
Buy a phone mount and a head set
ArmpitNoise@reddit
Exactly.
How hard is it to not be playing with your fucking phone?
Dougb756@reddit
lol he’s 22, that’s very hard at his age
ArmpitNoise@reddit
Cause he can't spell Google?
Delicious_Peace_2526@reddit
Fuck driver cameras.
spicyluckyparty@reddit
Fuck drivers who touch their phone while driving.
Life-Excitement8217@reddit
Second this! Those are lame asf
PeachPieDelight@reddit
A couple weeks after I was fired because safety caught a reflection of a phone in my hand, I got a job with an AFP. In the 2-3 weeks I was out of work I figured out that every company is different; it will be a deal breaker for some companies but not others.
norseprincesspdx@reddit
You might be cooked but I would try and find a job immediately..do not waste time. I had a coworker who was fired for cell phone use and he acted quickly and then be good at your next job.

Yeah.. it was at night at the very end of my route & my phone screen was reflecting off the windshield onto the dashcam
PoopyStinkbutts@reddit
..were you texting/using it?
pumpfakers@reddit (OP)
I don’t even remember honestly.. but my phone was idle in the footage
BearsAteMyGarbage@reddit
If you didn't get a ticket from an actual cop then you were fired for internal reasons and it's not on your CDL record, but the company will tell future companies why you were fired if they ask.
Old-Wolf-1024@reddit
If they do that and he can prove it,it’s a solid lawsuit.
forkystabbyveggie@reddit
Common misunderstanding but not true. No us state or federal law limits what information employers can share about past employees when it comes to their behavior, performance or pay.
Some states even have job reference immunity laws that prevent employees from suing as long as the employer gave truthful info.
qaf0v4vc0lj6@reddit
Defamation lawsuits are extraordinarily expensive and they’re not contingency suits.
1morepl8@reddit
It also just means any company with an hr only verifies the term if employment.
daemonescanem@reddit
Nope, companies can only answer if your rehire candidate.
Redithyrambler@reddit
Can you explain/provide a source?
daemonescanem@reddit
US Labor law only allows a company to ask " did John Doe work at this company?" And "is this person eligible for re-hire?".
Anything other then that is verboten.
DAC reports are comprehensive background checks.
If an employer lies on a DAC report it, and employee can prove it lied, its basically an open & shut case of libel. Since it would harm a person's professional standing.
forkystabbyveggie@reddit
While I wish you were correct, you're extremely off.
Companies may give any and all info about your behavior and work performance. A quick Google search will return no labor law like you're referencing.
Some states even give job reference immunity to employers, so employees literally have no case as long as the information was truthful.
Also libel cases are never open and shut, it's one of the more pain in the ass civil case types to win. But if an employer lies on a DAC report you can have it removed if you have proof.
The United States offers minimal protection for employees. Essentially they protect your pay and protect you from physical/sexual abuse, and reduce your chances of being seriously injured or poisoned. Then there's FMLA.
You won't find shit about employers disclosing information about you.
BearsAteMyGarbage@reddit
I think you're right I forgot. I worked for a really bad 1099 company once that told everyone why he didn't like me for the following 2 years after I quit when all they were doing was verifying employment.
daemonescanem@reddit
1099 is very different. Basically a contractor then.
HomerTheGeek@reddit
You got fired for it and you can’t remember any details? That’s seems weird
pumpfakers@reddit (OP)

WW903@reddit
No big deal at all in this case then. Most reasonable companies don’t give a shit about getting fired by a mega
SuperiorTrucker@reddit
Yea if it was just US express who got you, you’ll be okay. Now if it was DOT, that’s as bad as a dui in the eyes of many companies

business_estate8647@reddit
western wont touch you with a 10 foot pole if ur termed. i know i just spoke to a recruiter a few weeks ago and thats what i was told.
Lumpy-Macaron4512@reddit
Just lie when asked why you are looking for employment
PShubbs91@reddit
Western's recruiters lie their asses off too. Legit at my orientation they said "You all actually listened to someone you've never met and came all the way to Nashville for this?" Not saying the recruiter lied to you about that but you have to take most everything they say with a grain of salt.

Why don’t you just join the military you’re already used to not being at home
pumpfakers@reddit (OP)
Idk man
sstandnfight@reddit
The pay is shit, you're shackled to the commitment, and it isn't really for everyone. It's more than "you are away from home." Being sent to fight Israel's war for very little pay and almost no worthwhile benefits is a zero-sum game. You'll be fine finding a new job. Signing away 6 years of your life isn't going to be better than just finding a new driving job.
n3rf_h3rd3r@reddit
It depends on your job. Some are underpaid compared to the civilian equivalents, some over, some about the same.
There are also other benefits than base pay.
Plus, there are a lot of certifications besides college that the military pays for(IT, Project management, etc.)
Most people in the military never even see combat. Most are supporting roles. There are downsides of course, but you can say that about any sector or job. For some people it’s the right decision, for some it’s not.
Last thing is, that no matter what you do or for how long, you’ll have some pretty cool stories.
Hoopajoops@reddit
The pay can eventually rise. My brother was in the AF for 20 years and he was the sole income provider for his wife and kid. He was able to buy houses whenever he moved. They also provided money to pay for a moving company and got payed a decent amount to buy a house after moving. Military is decent pay for younger guys.. after highschool I just got trash jobs for barely over minimum wage.. and it was like that until I graduated college
Distinct-Event-7472@reddit
Shortest contract is four years and pay is shit for your first couple years but your living in the barracks (same could be said for trucking) and you also you don’t pay for your own food and most roles in the military are support hell I’ve met dudes 10 years in and they never deployed
v3gas21@reddit
Do NOT join the military to be a meat shield for rich people ... sign with someone else and learn from your mistakes. Never do this again and take safety seriously -- your job depends on it.
Also, try spotting (yard truck) for a bit. The pay is meh but you hone your skills and usually gain confidence.
Distinct-Event-7472@reddit
Just some food for thought bro I always tell young people to consider it I like to hear about people thriving but if you can make it as a truck driver which is absolutely doable then good on you
Crashy1620@reddit
If I knew what I knew now when I was 22, I’d join any branch of service that would take me. If there is a reason that you can’t, such is life. If there isn’t a reason, I’d rather fight anyone’s war than deal with trucking for the rest of my life.
AMFharley@reddit
Currently AD Navy…. (class A with all endorsements)
Go find another job. Military isn’t the answer.
mistman23@reddit
It is if you can get into the Space Force. High paying civilian job likely upon seperation
Distinct-Event-7472@reddit
A lot of jobs in the military including the Airforce are transferable and it doesn’t need to be a sexy career either you can do blue collar work
mistman23@reddit
If you are intelligent and can score high on the Asvab test, joining the Space Force could set you up for a great future.
daminister83@reddit
I second this one.... Your 22 your already never home, your already putting up with dumb shit, shasing miles for a good pay check. Why not go into a career that you know what your check is. I did 8 yrs beat decision I made in my life. I can literally go home and sit on my ass and collect a check, but I like looking at a fat ass bank account. Go join dude
n3rf_h3rd3r@reddit
The job sucked, most of the people were awesome. I got to see and do things I never thought I would get to. It provided stability for my family for 20 years. Plus, I never had to worry about what to wear. Come July it’s gonna be nice getting a couple of fat checks. I’m not as worried about getting a high paying job with that cushion. Plus with the training and experience (nuclear, cyber, machining) I know I’ll at least get a pretty decent job even in this market anyways.
I agree with other commenters that it’s not for everyone, though. You gotta embrace the suck and Semper Gumbi.
SchityCityGangBang@reddit
You’ll be fine.
TrustBitter4195@reddit
Crazy cuz i work for hogan transportation and i got a cellphone violation. I didn’t get fired even tho they said i was supposed to and i have TVC Pros so they took the case to court and got it down to a trailer light violation with no points on my record. I’m not sure what advice to give you cuz my situation went completely different. Idk if the original ticket will show on my DAC or MVR but I’m just glad i didn’t get fired.
Redsoxdragon@reddit
If you got fired because a camera caught you. It's on your DAC. But you're almost at 1 year experience, so companies that don't care about the DAC will start considering you. Just say you left because of difference with management. Legally anyone verifying employment can only be told your hire and leaving dates.
If you got fired because a cop caught you. I'm not sugar coating this. You're done. This is up there with a DUI as far as severity. You are damn near uninsurable.
Either way, future lesson for you. Put down the phone when driving.
Locruids@reddit
Thankfully Im with a 200 fleet company that the owner absolutely refuses inward facing cameras.
Inside-Priority-4913@reddit
Well if you got caught on company camera it will show on your dat report as a firing for safety reasons and most companies will not hire you,but you still have a chance to get hired by a Russian company or one of those Chicago outfits,, or mybe even find some local farm work hauling… but if you got caught by Johnny law,you might be screwed for acouple of years because it will be hard to put you on any company insurance … you made a big mistake young man,and i hope you learned your lesson,,this mistake will haunt you for a while .. I’m not gonna judge you because i made a few mistakes in my trucking career when i started 21 years ago in my younger days,,companies are more strict on drivers now,,and phones can be a career killer,,so if you’re lucky enough to get a second chance, you might wanna lock your phone up until you get done driving for the day

There’s tons of openings for all kinds of trucking fields out here man so don’t be scared to get back into it. They’re will be bumps in every road of life but just make sure you get over this one bro.

Yeah I know May was "lenient" when I was there. Its gonna be hard for him. Within the first year makes it so much worse.
Singledad247@reddit
Ha, got fired for the same thing, maybe the same Walmart (Gordansville, VA). I was going like 3 mph and hit a curb, and it set off my eld. Not going to lie, but it made it pretty difficult to get a job while it was on my DAC. (But had some money saved up and wasn’t in a huge hurry to get right back to work.) They told me they were going to “investigate it further,” so I quit right after being told that. They still put it on my DAC as a “safety termination,” but luckily I got them to change it.
Honestly, you’re going to have a rough time getting on with a MEGA carrier, and smaller companies didn’t want me at that time because of my lack of experience. Good luck, let us know how it goes! You can try to appeal it if you want to with (DriverIq) I think it was.
WallaWallaby011@reddit
What? I've ran over curbs before and I just smiled and said oops! Nobody ever spoke to me... sometimes on less populated streets at 3am you just don't swing out wide enough... TapWaterKY@reddit
Since it was a company policy thing and not a ticket, you’re not completely cooked. Might have to eat shit with a less than ideal 1099 gig or a second chance W2 company for 6 months to put some time and experience between you and the termination, but there’s still hope. I got fired for a company policy (not cell phone) and the requirement from a lot of carriers was 6 months recent experience with no safety issues.
Some companies might not hire you for years cause of it, but you’re not completely done for
