Mk3 Mr2 first car?

I’m being given a mr2 mk3 as my first car just for my first year of driving I don’t plan on doing anything crazy with it but what should I know to stay safe on the roads? Uk btw.

It’s an unusual first car because it’s designed to be a little sports car with the engine behind you rather than in front. Virtually no luggage space, a little “frunk” under the bonnet and lockers behind the seats but that’s it. -You’ll be asking IKEA to deliver.
It’s easy enough to drive because it’s light with great brakes and reverse parking is easy with the top down. The things that make it a fun little sports car can also make it a bit tedious on longer journeys, the engine/wind noise, the ride etc. A normal family hatch will feel like a wafty Range Rover after the MR2.

If you can insure it and keep it maintained, it’s a good option. But if you neglect it it will go downhill pretty quickly, they’re old cars now

You need to read up on snap oversteer.

Basically not a concern on 3rd gen MR2's. The longer wheel base helps significantly.

Does 50mm really make that much difference?

I used one as a track car for a while, they're quite stable, they don't have a lot of power in the low rev range, but there's very little in terms of driver aids, no TC or ESP. I did spin mine a couple times on track and they do need to be pushed quite far to get there, yet at the same time there's very little warning it's going to go
My concern is that as a new driver you've still got a lot of learning to do, and you're likely to get carried away (as we all have done), and there's much safer cars for you to cut your teeth in.

The 3rd gen was the safest of them all, you got a longer wheelbase for better stability. Personally I would out some good tires on it with decent ratings for rainy weather so it never surprises you. Should be a fun first car!
