so my cpu recently started overheating to the point it completely freezes while gaming and im thinking its a thermal paste or cooler issue so im wondering what a good new cooler might be
i got the pc prebuilt from i buypower about 5 years ago and have never replaced the thermal paste and this problem only started happening about 2 weeks ago then stooped and started doing again yesterday

A new cooler can help and you can reuse it when you move to a newer platform but the biggest issue is the case. Your front panel has 3 cheap fans blocked by a solid slab of glass which further hampers their airflow.
Look up how to remove the front panel so that the 3 fans are just running in free air and compare the before and after temperatures.

Is the fan pointing down towards the processor or pointing towards back of case?

it faces the glass pannel

Yeah probably stock junk If it's intel they crappy plastic clips to connect to your motherboard so could be losing contact. Could also be paste, but you can kill two birds with one stone by getting just about any tower cooler I've heard That hyper 212 is good, I like arctic myself and I've used I'd cooling tower coolers on some builds. Find something that fits your budget and install that any of those should come with paste and there's a million install videos on YouTube

Sorry you don't have to be specific.. Just is it air cooled or aio, and if air cooled is it one of those larger ones or like a little stock cooler thats included with some CPUs?
Venular271144@reddit (OP)
it is air cooled and it looks kind of small so ima guess its a stock one i dont really know how to tell a difference

I’d replace the thermal paste and adjust the fan curves in the bios before replacing the fan

i do have thermal paste ordered but it wont be here till tuesday so how do i adjust the fan curves?

Use a software called Fan Control.
Venular271144@reddit (OP)
after doing that and setting the cpu fans to 100% it helped a little bit but fluctuates from 78ish to 95 while playing vicky 3

Try a repaste.

Cooler Master Hyper 212 is less than $20 right now on Amazon. I used it on several Socket 1200 builds.
