What's your move when the budget airline stops being cheap?

Not talking about one weird fare search. I mean routes where the cheap carrier used to make the whole trip possible, then the schedule gets cut or the fare is suddenly close to Delta/United anyway.
When that happens, what do you actually do?
- nearby airport
- different dates
- bus/train/drive
- wait for a sale
- skip the trip
I've caught myself doing the math and realizing the "cheap" flight isn't cheap enough to justify the rest of the trip anymore.

Skyscanner / road trip (ugh gas prices) / cancel

find an alternative that still makes the trip cheap: train, car, dates, etc.
The cheap fares I've been accustomed to here in the US to Europe via Toronto Airport in Canada are now charging $700+ 'flight surcharges' (probably due to fuel increases).
Sadly I don't see those going away if passengers continue to fly and pay these increase fares. This will make me cancel trips / not plan trips.
But for local travel or when i am in Europe already, trains car or buses are the go to.

By some of these comments you can tell the people that get on a plane once every three years. What do you mean "Drive" or "Go somewhere else"? Good lord.

Exhibit A: Southwest Airlines.
Nope, never again. Alaska Airlines gets all my business now, as it’s the same price or less.
Exhibit B: Straights of Hormuz debacle I bought this year’s tix earlier this year. I paid $600. The current price for a ticket on the same plane and flight is now $1100. The flight is still months away.
Next year? Either suck it up and pay double or drive to and holiday Baja California, Mexico (from SoCal)

Just because I like to pay less doesn’t mean I can’t pay more
BreadfruitRegular631@reddit
Right. that or go some where else. I travel for pleasure not business.
Redaerkoob@reddit
That’s what we did. Decided flights were too much so we took a train to the nearest major city and had fun instead of flying to another one.

You are in a forum for discussion about how to travel and spend less
delightful_caprese@reddit
Yes, spending less is a hobby of mine

Unhelpful condescending comment and a private profile name a more classic duo

Sorry you can't stalk me. Were you hoping I was a cutie pie? Sorry you can't see pics of me.
If it helps, I didn't try to stalk you so I don't know if your profile is private or not.

Idk why people on Reddit get upset when your profile comments and posts are hidden.
anothercar@reddit
They want to "dig up dirt"
Honestly I recommend everyone sets the profile page to private. It's only weirdos & losers who stalk your profile page. There's no reason to give them what they so desperately want.
tpageforfunzies@reddit
Its to know if youre always an ass and whether I should just block you or not, generally people who hide their interactions are doing it for a reason, and your weird ass response is my point lol

You provided zero to the conversation except to be a weirdo.

My username isn't private...? It's "anothercar" and it should be publicly available

If you have too little budget, save more or pick a cheaper option. You pay for being inflexible. I don't care that much about a specific route. Multiple destinations can provide similar experiences, certainly if you strip away the specific tourist attractions and just look at functionality.
How is the flight price relevant? The costs of the entire trip versus what it offers determines whether it is worthwhile. How the price is divided over individual components is imho irrelevant. Sure, there may be some psychological effect, but realistically it is completely irrelevant.
