ClockworkJim@reddit
I bought my copy of dune at the scholastic book Fair.
ladybug1215@reddit
We also dodged the ball and risked our fingers on the small square scooters. We memorized the tables of multiplication and learned the secret lore of reading the analog clock. On journeys we cranked windows open by hand and listened to the ancient songs of our parent’s youth.
slypmpkn19@reddit
As a former fat kid, Dodgeball was my worst nightmare. Feigning illness would not get you out of it. Crouching in the corner and hiding behind other kids would only make it worse.
Okra-Tomatoes@reddit
I always stood right in front to purposefully get hit first so I could sit on the sidelines. I always hated when some dumb kid caught the ball and we all had to go back out.
Electrical-Pie-8192@reddit
We didn't have dodgeball, but I hated the dancing of the square because we didn't "dress down" - shorts and t shirts- and thus had no excuse to not participate
HarleyButterfly@reddit
My 7 year old and I were given a ride by a friend this afternoon and she was amazed at the sight of the window cranks in the truck! It was funny showing her how the window rolled down 😂
Not_So_Bad_Andy@reddit
Forget dodgeball. We had red rover.
Allaplgy@reddit
We had warball.
OkPlantain6773@reddit
Those scooters are making the rounds on reddit lately. What was even the point? I remember the finger pinching. Was not the purpose of gym to make us run around and burn off energy?
Worth_Specific3764@reddit
"As a lad.." bwahahhahahah this is so good
Masters_of_Sleep@reddit
And when we had thirst, we quenched it with water of the hose.
HarleyButterfly@reddit
My elementary school had the best outdoor water fountains! When you stuck a finger in one, the others would rise higher, it was a lot of fun! Oh how I miss the simple things that brought so much joy to the school yard.
Unless you were sipping from the fountain when one of your pals jammed their finger in another 😉 lol.
deadc0de@reddit
When I use a water fountain I still check the spout for a rolled up piece of paper so the water doesn't take out my eye.
HarleyButterfly@reddit
😂 oh you're right 🤣 I forgot about that!
Fantastic-Regular614@reddit
or...
101violations@reddit
As an inner city kid we didn't have water hoses but we did have trickling fire hydrants.
ThatEvanFowler@reddit
Mmm, municipal infrastructure...
ResurgentClusterfuck@reddit
Mmmmmmmm plasticky metally warm then OH GOD FROZEN hose water
Sometimesunaware@reddit
How did you kick phonics after getting hooked on them?
sugarturtle88@reddit
you don't... you discover thriftbooks and end up surrounded by more books in your home than you'll ever read and you'll still crave more... you will thirst for books like the cracked desert soil thirsts for water and that thirst shall never be slaked
Sometimesunaware@reddit
The floors of my house sag from the weight of the overloaded book shelves.
ThatEvanFowler@reddit
Yo, ya'll got some of that good Bruce Coville? I'll do anything. I got these cheeseburgers.
HarleyButterfly@reddit

We were tested in the skills of hopping by cruel devices of devious torture that bore the name ...Skip-It
Past-Conversation303@reddit
I got hit in the face with one, once. I was immediately like "screw you guys, I'm going home!" 😂😂
PersonalFinanceD@reddit
And the greatest thing of all (music) is the counter on this ball. Skip it, skip it ... (the jingle popped into my head and now I hope it takes up residence in yours).
corvus_wulf@reddit
Haah
slypmpkn19@reddit
I thought you were going to say Chinese jump-rope.
MrsSantini@reddit
Oh, the good ol days!
zealot_ratio@reddit
We weeded out the unworthy with feats of strength like the Climbing of the Stupid Rope in the Gymnasium, tests of resilience like the Recovery of Major Injury from the Steel Playground Equipment, and time honrored entertainment rituals like the Wheeling of the TV Cart into the Classroom
ReallyTeddyRoosevelt@reddit
Its undescribable how much of a superiority complex I developed from being the first kid in my class to climb to the top of the rope.
darksunshaman@reddit
I never could climb the rope, until basic training. Same for pull-ups.
zealot_ratio@reddit
I think I am the sole person from the era whose school did not have a rope.
whistleridge@reddit
None of the schools in our county had a rope, not even the super old middle school that had been built in the 1890s.
Sit_Ubu_Sit-Good_Dog@reddit
I’m still not sure how it wasn’t the leading cause of death for kids in the 90s.
Available-Crow-3442@reddit
Kids are like Bumbles…they bounce!
101violations@reddit
My school didn't have one either. We didn't really didn't have any gym curriculum. Just dodge ball sometimes, relay races, couple kids playing with the basketballs (had like 3 or 4) or sit on the mats and talk shit.
sugarturtle88@reddit
i was the only kid who liked to run in my entire grade at school...i lived for the mile run day in PE just to remind everyone else that while they may be able to climb things or do a pushup, I'd leave them to be eaten by a bear.
it was always fun to hear how many of them thought that they'd fight the bear and win 🤦🏻♀️
101violations@reddit
For me it was being picked to clean the chalk board erasers. Two of us got to go outside to them clap the erasers, then take them to a special machine that would clean them. By the time we got back, class was almost over so it was straight to lunch & recess.
Was such a simple honor and privilege. 🤣
HarleyButterfly@reddit
3rd grade core memory unlocked! Getting picked to go to the ye ol' fire tower to clap the erasers was so satisfying, much like an extra second recess. 😂
Available-Crow-3442@reddit
As a fat kid, I spent a significant part of my time one year working out enough so I COULD reach the damn top of the rope. You can’t imagine the pride.
ResurgentClusterfuck@reddit
I was one of the few who could chin up
I was also like 4'0" and 55lb soaking wet
ResurgentClusterfuck@reddit
My head aches recalling the peculiar bong of an eight year old kid's head bouncing off the jungle gym bars
airportspongebath@reddit
There is a dull thud noise that cannot be recreated under any other circumstances. Unrelated: why are my ears always ringing and I constantly have a headache?
TP_Crisis_2020@reddit
Can't forget playing Red Rover!
PersonalFinanceD@reddit
Red rover, red rover, send TP_Crisis_2020 right over! (Also, very fascinating username)
FiveCrappedPee@reddit
The Lamborghini poster market never has quite recovered since
ShawnaLAT@reddit
The kids are still buying them! I’ve helped out at Scholastic Book Fairs at my kids’ school and sold many a sports car or unicorn poster.
CrouchingDomo@reddit
UNICORN POSTER!!!!!
Sorry, I just really miss the book fair 😂
Conscious_Drawer8356@reddit
When we are all in “retirement home” we should bring back the book fair just like in elementary school
hangryvegan@reddit
Scholastic just found a new future market!
Jedi_Knight_TomServo@reddit
I could see a business doing bank just going around to offices and business doing adult Scholastic book fairs.
AsideLost@reddit
I would always pick books that came with free shit. Regardless of if I even wanted the book
Roller_ball@reddit
I gave my kid $30 for the book fair and he came home with a bunch of toys and novelty erasures.
The next year, I told him that I would only give him money for the fair if he promised to get only books. He then came home books attached to toys that were far more toy than book. Progress, I guess.
Robotlollipops@reddit
Does anyone remember doing archery in middle school P.E.? I was so bad at it, but I kinda wish I could learn again because I have actual muscles in my arms now
JaxxisR@reddit
I miss parachute day.
Fernandolamez@reddit
I'm surprised we haven't discovered "white" or "yellow" lung disease from clapping chalkboard erasers.
wheretohides@reddit
I got roller coaster tycoon, and sims games from the catalog.
the__ghola__hayt@reddit
My cursive was always chicken scratch. Now I do the psychotic all caps, just like my father before me.
dark4181@reddit
Ah, my person pan pizza from the Pizza Hut book club. That was the life.
Day_Old_Paper@reddit
Occasionally, upon completion of the pre-selected bound print, we were treated to a personal feast of ancient Roman bread topped with sauces of tomato, cured meat, and cheese.
rubberkeyhole@reddit
Thought you’d appreciate this one. 💜
Broad_Tie9383@reddit
These feasts were such a marke of good standing within the community that they were held in special temples with stained glass illumination where such an abundance of food was available that the kale was mere decoration.
General_Departure583@reddit
Absolutely loved the scholastic book faire!
HoneyUndo@reddit
Ah yes, the Scholastic Book Faire was a glorious celebration
MonkCherry@reddit
You guys were lucky to get Scholastic book fairs. I now work for the district I grew up and went to school in. We never book fairs back then. We just got the newspaper thin 4-6 page catalog to order from. Now, they get two fairs per year.

And watch Ferngully’s Last Rainforest on a 19” crt tv

The benefits of a classical education.
goat_penis_souffle@reddit
Mother would reward my diligence with sufficient coinage to purchase mine choice of a thrilling Bumps of Goosee tome or perhaps an exaggerated photographic rendition of an exotic automotive conveyance to adorn mine dwelling walls.
Such heady days indeed!
ResurgentClusterfuck@reddit
Alas, I was an aficionado of those who watch over thd young in exchange for currency or, on several occasions, trips to exotic locales
MissSally300@reddit
Hahahahaha brilliant
Only1Skrybe@reddit
Quite simply put, sir, I am a bill. Merely one bill, of the individual variety. And here I sit. Perched, in fact. On the marbled steps of but one hill, and one hill alone. Truly ... Capitol.
ResurgentClusterfuck@reddit
I went to an elementary school in Southern Oregon for a fair portion of my elementary years and some kind soul always made sure there was money set aside for little D_C on book fair days.
It was no secret that my family was poor, I was a weirdo who read books for fun and instead of TV
Whoever that person was, thank you, because that fed my need for age appropriate things on top of the weird crap I got at the library
TL DR book fair angels are cool, maybe see if you can be one?
msheehan418@reddit
Faire has me💀
Infamous-Package3982@reddit
Do kids still stop, drop, and roll?
jennifer_m13@reddit
My addiction to buying things I don’t need started at a Scholastic book fair.
MissaLynn_@reddit
Aye yes alas, the good 'ol days
Fair_Blood3176@reddit
Like someone said before, scholastic book fair was like second Christmas.
des1gnbot@reddit
And the guns we brought to school came in neon colors, with ample cartridges waiting to be filled with liquid death.
Ultimatesims@reddit
When the winds swirled in vortexes of chaos we kneeled and pressed our heads to the ground while holding sacred texts over our heads.
Our parents waited in the parking lot to pick us up. Unsheltered many sucumbed to the swirling maelstrom. The old and new gods deemed their deaths necessary. Those that survived took their spawn to McDonald’s where they visited on french fries and soft served ice cream. Small trinkets were given to the children as appeasement. Soccer started at 5:00.

I remember the smell🥰
