Where does the belief that Europeans are poor come from?

I've often seen Americans refer to Europeans as "Europoors" or make similar statements about not having this or not having that despite having exactly that. Where does this come from?
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
It's mostly a joke, but also we make a lot more money.
Cygwing@reddit (OP)
Well it's not like Europe makes less money
ALoungerAtTheClubs@reddit
Average wages are lower in most Euro countries
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_average_wage
Cygwing@reddit (OP)
We also pay nothing for healthcare, nothing for education among other things
ALoungerAtTheClubs@reddit
Now you're just moving the goalposts.
Cygwing@reddit (OP)
Why? You're telling me paying less for things isn't relevant?
kaatie80@reddit
it's relevant, just not what the original point was. there's the comparison of wages, but then there's also the comparison of COL, how much money each group has leftover at the end of the month, QOL and what is covered by taxes, etc.
ALoungerAtTheClubs@reddit
Not when you claim that you don't have lower wages, and I demonstrated that you do. You're also more highly taxed to fund those things (which I'm not against, but that's a seperate discussion).
SenseNo635@reddit
With all due respect, do you honestly think you pay nothing for healthcare? I think I see the value of your “free” education (which, by the way, is also not free).
TL;DR free doesn’t mean what you think it does.
PJSeeds@reddit
That's not what making more money means. You asked about revenue and now you're talking about gross profit (and Americans still win out there due to lower taxes).
eyetracker@reddit
The entire continent has the same healthcare and education system? Amazing! I hope the Spotted Dick is good in Bulgaria.
mustachechap@reddit
Even with that in mind, Americans generally have more money.
TsundereLoliDragon@reddit
You want a cookie?
sourcreamus@reddit
Median incomes in Europe are significantly lower than in the US. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_average_wage
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
....uh. Yeah. Ya literally do.
Cygwing@reddit (OP)
By what metric?
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
Why did you delete your post, coward?
Cygwing@reddit (OP)
Why is that a problem, rude Redditor?
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
Oh, not a problem. Just a reflection on your character.
Cygwing@reddit (OP)
Likewise
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
Eh. Nah.
mustachechap@reddit
How much money we have
Ok_Let_7612@reddit
And how little taxes we pay on it relatively
CIAMom420@reddit
By the fact that the average American makes more money than every European country except Norway or Switzerland.
PerformanceDouble924@reddit
By looking at median income per country.
sjedinjenoStanje@reddit
Money.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Median_income#Median_Daily_Disposable_Income_per_person
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
Median salary or median household income seems a good place to start.
nsbsalt@reddit
If you put the UK in a list with the 50 US states they would be 50 of 51 in GDP per capita.
No_Prior_4114@reddit
Lol that would be a false assumption
MrLongWalk@reddit
You literally do, wages and GDP per capita are higher in the US. That’s the point of the joke.
bullsbarry@reddit
Americans on average have more disposable income as well after accounting for things like healthcare costs.
Muroid@reddit
If you compare same jobs between the US and most of Europe, especially professional jobs, the US tends to pay noticeably more. This is somewhat, but not entirely, offset by differences in spending on things like health insurance and higher education.
Initial_Fill_2655@reddit
Never heard that.
tabby90@reddit
I've never heard that. Maybe it's regional?
smedema@reddit
As an American, many Americans are stupid. They think that because the average pay is higher that they are richer. That is not the case.
Popular-Local8354@reddit
You’re telling me a common nickname made in jest isn’t entirely accurate? I’m shocked, shocked!
smedema@reddit
Who said anything about in jest. I have heard it by many people not in jest.
False-Decision630@reddit
Honestly believe it stems from American exceptionalism propaganda. We tell ourselves we are the richest, have most freedom, best Healthcare, best education, etc...
Traditional_Trust418@reddit
I've literally never heard this until this post
PossibilityNo8765@reddit
Most americans live to work. I think most Americans just can't understand why someone wouldn't want to be working all the time.
FalseCredential@reddit
Definitely not a common belief
flp_ndrox@reddit
Most of Europe isn't doing as well as the UK and Canada, and they are doing worse and are poorer than Mississippi according to most indicators including per capita GDP, purchasing power, wages, etc.
Sea_Breakfast828@reddit
I've never met a single person who actually believes that Europe is poor or that Europeans don't have X.
It's mostly a joke or a stereotype.
Ok-Armadillo-5634@reddit
Depends on what country in Europe you are talking about.
Sea_Breakfast828@reddit
Yeah, that is 100% true. Belarus? Pretty poor. The Netherlands? Pretty rich.
TheOwlMarble@reddit
Never heard the expression, but US salaries are generally higher than EU counterparts, so it might be partially be based on that. That said, I imagine the term is really just jingoism by a small group of online idiots.
Arleare13@reddit
I'm not sure that's a "belief" as much as it's stupid internet trolling usually done in response to similarly trollish namecalling of Americans by Europeans.
Vast_Lemon7906@reddit
Agreed. "Europoor" is very tame compared to what you'll see written about Americans on European, British, Australian subreddits.
YardSardonyx@reddit
I am aware that wages are lower in Europe versus the US but I have never seen or heard that term in my life until just now
TsundereLoliDragon@reddit
Because we make way more money and also have way more disposable income.
Ok_Let_7612@reddit
I think it’s probably just defensive response to European criticism of the USA
sjedinjenoStanje@reddit
"criticism"
Nah, Euros troll, and Americans troll back.
le_crobag@reddit
It's a reddit thing as far as I know. I've never seen a person in real life say "Europoors"
Vivaciousseaturtle@reddit
Sounds like something Ron Swanson would say
StirlingS@reddit
I rarely see people IRL talk about Europeans.
Vivaciousseaturtle@reddit
It’s been going around lately that in terms of GDP per capita, England is poorer than all USA 50 states. I saw some “man on the street” interviews where people thought England would rank like 7th in terms of states gdp per capta but they would be 51st. There are many ways to measure wealth or interpret data, but at least in terms of this measure, England is quite poor
Aggravating_Bend_622@reddit
No you don't see Americans often refer to Europeans as "Europoors" whatever that means, stop instigating shit on reddit.
MrsSnuffleupagus764@reddit
I think it is deep MAGA propaganda. No one I know thinks that Europeans are poor. I suspect that the people who do believe this have never met a person from Europe.
AdministrativeTip479@reddit
It’s just a response to Europeans ripping on the US, and also a joke.
kandosii_naast@reddit
I've never heard that in all my 45 years in America. Don't believe it to be even remotely true either.
MuchDevelopment7084@reddit
This is the first time I've ever heard that term. Is this possibly some stupid thing some troll created?
Responsible_Side8131@reddit
I’ve never heard anyone say that
Caliopebookworm@reddit
I honestly have no idea. I’ve never heard this before, nor have I ever heard Europeans described as poor.
gleaming-the-cubicle@reddit
That is something said in jest and even then only online
No human person has ever used that word in a sincere manner
This is a joke
ALoungerAtTheClubs@reddit
Isn't that a 4chan thing? They peaked with Rick Rolling; I wouldn't worry about itm
Much_Bat_1572@reddit
I've never heard anyone call Europeans poor, and I don't consider them poor at all. It sounds like trolling.
MrLongWalk@reddit
That’s not a common honestly held belief at all, it’s a troll against Europeans who consider themselves superior by every measure and who are willing to believe things like this despite considering themselves experts on the US. Basically it’s a way to piss off people who can’t be talked to in good faith anyway.
GhostAnthonyBourdain@reddit
I have never, ever heard that. If anything we think y'all are better off than us.
OhThrowed@reddit
In part, from decades of y'all telling us you can't afford the defense spending mandated by NATO.
Mesoscale92@reddit
Mainly from raw gdp per capita numbers without considering a host of other factors.
holymacaroley@reddit
I don't know anyone who thinks that.
revengeappendage@reddit
Probably the part where they make significantly less money (on average).
wherethelootat@reddit
No one thinks this. There are wealthy and poor people everywhere 🙄
wounds-of-light@reddit
It’s banter.
