Am I insane in the membrane?

I just scrolled past an ad for adult diapers, and the company name is “Depend.” I always remembered these being called Depends with an S on the end. I looked up the brand and behold, it’s just Depend. According to Wikipedia, it’s always been just Depend with no S on the end. Am I crazy for always thinking these were called Depends?

Please feel free to roast me for my algorithm. My phone apparently thinks it’s time I get adult diapers. I’m only 46, jeez.

I hadn’t heard this Mandela effect before but I think everyone referred to them as depends. I suspect it is because underwear is typically referred to in the plural (no one wears a boxer shorts). Diapers are generally referred to in the plural unless you are saying wearing a diaper. I can’t say for sure that I remember boxes saying depends on them, but I do remember everyone referring them with the ‘s’

Agreed. People do tend to add an "S" unnecessarily to brand or store names, either as a possessive or a plural, but I think that buying a multipack of disposable items generally implies the plural nature.

Given that the brand name is also a standard word doesn't help things.

I remember I used to clown this one older lady for saying she bought her couch from “the Costcos”. Now I’ve become that older lady, not by pluralizing, but by adding an unnecessary “the” to any store name. I don’t go to Lowe’s, I go to the Lowe’s.

The product has always been “depend” but people pluralize when talking about them. Same reason no one says “go to the store and get Zip Lock” just because it’s singular on the box.

I used to argue with a friend whether or not Pepsi can be called coke. My argument was always that we call all of them bandaids instead of "plastic strips."

This is fairly standard in Texas with “coke.” We use it like people in other parts of the country use pop or soda.

Pepsi shouldn't be called Coke, but both could be called cola as a generic. I used to order "cola" from places to indicate I didn't care about brand, but stopped when I realized that confusions people more than asking for Pepsi and explaining every time that, yes Coke is fine instead.

I have a love/hate relationship with hearing people refer to singularly named businesses in the possessive or pluralized. Kroger is at the top of the list for this. I've gone so far as to mock them by saying something like, "Maybe after Kroger, we should stop by Home Depot's. There's a Wal-Mart's just across the street". You can really tell who you're dealing with if they don't bat an eye when you respond this way.

Okay, so maybe it's really more of a just hate relationship. I don't let it bother me too much, though. I'm the grand scheme it's truly nothing.

I was in CVS yesterday and I happened to walk past a display of them. I guess I didn't pay enough attention because I swear I thought the packaging said Depends. The Mandela affect is tripping me out more and more the older I get. Send help.

If it makes you feel better, I have a whole Mandela husband. We’ve both always hated Miracle Whip, and absolutely roasted anybody who liked it. The other day, I saw a jar of Miracle Whip in our fridge and I was like, “what is this?” My husband tells me that it’s Miracle Whip, and I’m chuckling like, “did you buy it as a joke or something?” He turns to me and with a totally straight face, tells me he’s always liked Miracle Whip. He has not backed down since.

So…after 21 years of marriage, I’m getting used to my new husband who likes Miracle Whip. If someone does send help, could you please also send them my way?

Ohohoho, I hate when that happens. It feels like the whole world has been gaslighting me to believe one thing for years, then suddenly the carpet is pulled from under me and everyone looks at me like I'm nuts. Drives me crazy. You're just kinda left standing there wondering if you've gone insane because you distinctly remember one thing occurring on a consistent basis, but people are telling you it never happened.

We called them Depends because we address those things as plurals. Pants and undies are addressed as plurals all the time.

When we were young the tag on the jeans said Girbaud but we called them Girbauds

I think most people do call them Depends, even if it isnt the actual name.

Americans add an "s" to the end of a lot of company names that don't have them. I hear peoe talk about "Aldis" constantly, for example.

I know when I was little June Allyson doing the ads and she’d clearly say Depend.

As a side note if anyone remembers those roundtables Burt Reynolds would do with different old actresses, one episode he had June Allyson on and I asked my mom if that was the diaper lady.
