Non-Balkaner here. Whats that meme saying “What does a Slovenian do when he turns 18? He goes to Bosnia to search for his father.”

I thought it was all a meme when balkan people said they hated each other, until i saw a tiktok of a Slovenian girl being rac-ist, comparing a classroom from 2016 with only slovenes, and a classroom in 2026 with slovenes in the minority, mixed with albanian, serbian, bosnian, croatian, macedonian people.
The commemts were then a disaster, balkan people arguing with each other, degrading, saying about “What does a Slovenian do when he turns 18? He goes to Bosnia to search for his father.” Etc
Theyre legitely even hating on their own people lol. But what does that saying mean? Is it something historically what happened between slovenes and bosnians?

I was sometimes shocked by how little we actually know each other here in the Balkans.
I think many of us grow up with ideas shaped by the place we live, the media, politics, history, and sometimes propaganda too. I am Albanian from Kosova, and the first time I experienced racism was in Greece in 2004, when I was 12 years old. A Greek man was racist toward me only because I was Albanian.
Later, I met some Serbian colleagues at a Software Engineering conference in Germany. They were surprised that an Albanian from Kosova was a good software engineer. They asked me where I studied and where I was born. When I told them I was born in Kosova and also studied in Kosova, I could see they were a bit surprised.
Now I have Greek, Bosnian, and Serbian friends, and one thing I noticed is that in the end we are actually very similar. And to be fair, when I ask Albanians about other Balkan people, I also hear stereotypes from our side too.
So yes, we hate, judge, and fight each other a lot, but I really think that if we actually knew each other better, we would see that we have much more in common than we think.

That's why I wanna see it
True-Blacksmith4235@reddit
Why? Is sounds awful all around.
Big-Waltz5204@reddit
It's just nonsense. Balkan mindset is more macho so they think they gonna come to Slovenia and fuck local women. Not happening. Like anywhere, if you don't have thick wallet you can only imagine. No mature woman gonna wanna have anything to do with you if you're broke and if you're an immigrant, lol impossible.
Early-Show2886@reddit
And why in Germany such thing happend? since the time of the guestworkers?
Big-Waltz5204@reddit
Sure it happens but it's not a common thing. If you're an outsider good luck even finding local girl that gonna go on a date.
Early-Show2886@reddit
LOL in Germany many German women and Turkish Men married...we have so much mixed of them. And now since 2015 the Afghanis, syrian refugees also with german women.
pilose-sre@reddit
That's a joke, not a meme, and I heard it in early '00.
ZestycloseHat4990@reddit
I mean its not rocket science. Slovenia was the most affluent place where people went to work so the meme/joke scenario on the other balkaners head was that local women romantisised them as coming from a more "masculine" coultoure and performed adultery. It adds up to the fact slovenians are racists towards these immigrands. Its a sexist joke that universally exist in blue collar environments about white collar people but tbh "immigrant blue collar worker" isnt a job thats glazed upon romantically. (In case some male Slovenes where offended)
Imaginary_Plastic_53@reddit
Its second part of old joke from Yugoslavia times :
- What does a Bosnian do when he turns 18? He goes to Slovenia to search for job.
- What does a Slovenian do when he turns 18? He goes to Bosnia to search for his father.
Mysterious-Put1459@reddit
For some reason I've heard this with Macedonian men and Bulgarian women. I still don't know what it is referring to.
Weissenburg_21@reddit
I'm pretty sure it's some kind of weird discriminatory rhetoric against Bosnian men dating Slovene women and Bosnians leaving them with kids or something.
polishsl4ve@reddit (OP)
Oh i asked someone what he meant with it and he said something like that bosnian men worked in 1990s-2000s in Ljubljana building highways, and f,cked slovene girls there and then went to bosnia again to their wife. Idk if this is a stereotype, joke of reality tho
Weissenburg_21@reddit
"Idk if this is a stereotype, joke of reality tho"
All three at different times probably 💀
The_ScarRzZ@reddit
racism is about races, we are all white, dafuq out of here
Jockey2@reddit
It’s a long running stereotype which is basically implying that lots of Bosnian men supposedly went to Slovenia as workers for a temporary time, had relationships there, and then “abandoned” children or families.
ChiefKeefSossaa@reddit
A lot of people from Bosnia and Herzegovina work and live in Slovenia. Better EU salaries and standard of living, that's the reason so much of them come to Slovenia.
