I've posted before but still haven't fully processed.
Bought a double wide trailer- new & efficient in a 55+.
Fucking depressing i tell ya.
Sold it & will never do that again. Super relieved I "rehearsed".
If you're thinking about it, AMA

Right now my dream is to live a year in different locations. So one year in Spain. Maybe one year in Mendocino CA. One year in Vermont. I think it would be fun. Pack light!

I am also thinking about slow travel in retirement.

Average age at my mom’s 55+ mobile home park is 78. You’re moving into Boomerville. Wait another 20 years when it’s filled with gen-x and you’ll fit in.

Good advice. I’ve read so much lately about how immature so many residents are- lots of bored Karens with nothing more to do than complain and cause drama. Sounds like high school so I’m thinking I will wait a while. Maybe after 70. Everyone has different needs/desires re: community so they are not for everyone. I would fear that being around only seniors and no younger people would put me in a routine of thinking I’m older than I really am. There are lots of benefits for some people so I see the appeal.

the gen x'rs at the place i lived were couch zombies. Like crashing w the 'rents. I just don't get along w peers who couch surf. Not my game.

My mom used to live in a 55+ trailer park when she was 55ish. She said the same thing: depressing.
I understand.
But explain as clearly as you can: what made it depressing?
plnnyOfallOFit@reddit (OP)
chain smoking porch corpses for one.
stale cat pee emanating from every home for another

I freaked her out when I paid her a visit. I told her the whole place was like a mausoleum, with corpses waiting to be buried.
She left shortly after that. Couldn't get that visual out of her head.

yah, the price was right at 1st, but the space rent went up 5% every yr. Predatory

Did you go back to a house?

I swim and I've thought of a 55+ community simply because they normally have decent lap pools right there (some have one inside and one outside).
But they are so far out of town that I don't want to have to commute if I'm living there.

We've been considering moving to an established (read 30 years old) 55+ community of 3/2 detached homes. They are actually condos with an HOA covering outside maintenance. How good does that arrangement sound?

The trailer parks in my town are all very depressing. A few are 55+ and are better than the all ages parks. I found an old survey report about the parks in my town. 90%+ had residents living below the poverty line. I know the upscale retirement communities aren’t the same as trailer parks.

It sounds like all of the hell of living in a HOA with even lamer people.

HOA were hypervigiliant & rates went up constantly. Scart me!

We bought in a nice, active, 55+ community. The activities were great: paved walking trails, full gym, fitness classes for any level, lots of games and things going on. Fantastic 2 bedroom 2400□' floor plan. It was great. The only problem was we weren't used to neighbors and city living. We sold the house and moved to the country. No activities, but no neighbors either. Ultimately we needed more elbow room and now live on acreage. If you are happy living in a neighborhood, it's great.

mine was in a city too, and i loathed that. Any park was full of druggies. No nature anywhere

I live down the street from a large upscale 55+ community. On occasion I’ll take advantage of their killer happy hour over at their clubhouse. Half the fun is people watching. It’s like “Breakfast Club” on Geritol.
Was your community large enough to have a clubhouse with a well stocked bar?
plnnyOfallOFit@reddit (OP)
not at all. I don't drink so that would be personal version of hayell.

My 73 yr old neighbor recently mentioned that she’s thinking of putting her house on the market and moving into a retirement community. Cost and upkeep of the house is getting to be too much. Meanwhile my 85 yr old mom is basically “I’ll leave my home in a body bag! No other way!!” And is barely able to keep the smaller fenced dog area grass from getting out of control.

ya, the place i bought had only rock gardens. Big appeal.
Then the weeds came up thru those damn rocks & i had to get after it daily or i'd get a notice from mgmnt.
No winning there
Signal_Glittering@reddit
What would have made it undepressing?
plnnyOfallOFit@reddit (OP)
Life. Actual ppl of all ages actually living life vs the dark vibe of death on a walker
