Why do newer generations of Toyota/Lexus look ugly as hell?

Their classic spindle-shaped front grille (e.g. previous gen Lexus ES and LS) aged so well. Now they are ditching that design language and adopting a new design that looks boxy as hell.

What are you talking about? Both Toyota and Lexus lacked personality and style on the exterior. They were boring ass cars built to be reliable and not to look at. The only thing I can think is that you were born Teddy Roosevelts first term in office if you think the old style was at all good. And I own a 96 Camry, 02 Avalon, and an 03 SC430.

All new generations of cars are hated until the next generation comes along.

It's entirely subjective. Just because you find them ugly does not mean they are objectively ugly.
As if to make my point, that "classic spindle-shaped from grille" that you seem to like was actually pretty widely hated so you might just be out of touch with modern aesthetic trends.

I have never considered a Lexus specifically because I hate the grill even though it’s a very practical choice

Classic spindle grill?
Lmfao you are in the minority.

A smoother front end is more efficient. As all the cars are moving to hybrid or electric engine cooling and air intake are becoming irrelevant. The grills look nice but perform much worse

The spindle grill gen did not age well, which is why designers were ordered to retire it.

Subjective. That’s why they make different looking cars. Choose one you like and carry on.
