I don't know if I have inflation brain but the price for this seems pretty good. I know range is not as competitive with iX3 and EX60 but I still want one in purple. I wish it was launching with LiDAR
345 miles is fine for the price but for a new platform in 2026 it feels bare minimum. A lot of people will cross shop iX3, EX60, and R2, even though there is a price difference
I don't see that happening. People don't cross shop Land Cruisers and X7's - they're competing in completely different markets.
People (like myself) are comparing against the Model Y, the Hyundai & KIA twins, the ID.4 and maybe entry EV luxury crossovers in the same price range like the Q4 e-tron and XC40.
Range is fine, 91 kWh specced battery is as big as you’d want in terms of cost and weight. It is a little behind the curve on charging speed though (29 minutes vs 15 mins for some cars now)
Maybe but $10k is a lot and Rivian sells on aesthetics and brand image as much as anything else. The iX3 doesn’t seem to speak to people cosmetically as much as the R2
Based on what exactly? Random posters on Reddit saying they don’t like it? iX3 is exceeding their projections in Europe already, and Rivian is pretty notorious for dwindling sales as they’ve been working towards the release of the R2. $10k isn’t a lot for people that are preordering a nearly $60,000 EV.
Not to mention your post implies BMW DOESN’T sell on aesthetics and brand image.
Look I like the iX3 a lot, but anecdotally (not just from Reddit) I know a lot of people in the real world who love Rivian and don’t want something as flashy (or expensive, even if perceived) as a BMW
I like Rivian too and have pulling for them to succeed.
I’ve also been a BMW fan for years, and every single model year has had people swearing it’s the worst design ever, and then the next gen comes out and people say the old design was classic. The pig snout has been the only exception, and even that isn’t received as poorly as it was upon release.
You are right about the perceived flashiness of BMW vs Rivian, my point was more about the price specifically. Hoping to see a lot of R2s on the road!
Unfortunately EX60 and iX3 also have the touchscreen dash :(. I don't like any of them and if one of them had buttons it'd probably be the easy frontrunner for me. I like the steering wheel controls on the R2 though
Honestly I’d always recommended getting a full size spare if you can afford the space. Seen many customers who are on a road trip get a flat tire and they got a weird size like 255/35/20 which isn’t stocked and they don’t have a spare either. Or their rim is damaged and cracked.
So better to pay for an extra rim and tire than risking getting stranded or having to pay for a tow home. And you can use a full size spare as long you need it on a trip then worry about repairs when you get home.
Could possibly wait for a solution from a company like 'Modern Spare', they seem to make quality donut spares for a variety of vehicles, but nothing listed for rivian yet. I have had bad luck on previous cars with hitting bullshit like drywall screws on the road (my record for number of flats in one year was 5 separate occasions). It was something like $350 and they make one for some other EVs and assuming there is space somewhere in the car the aftermarket will fill in here.
It's funny it's apparently deflated or engineered in some funny way so it fits in the car then once you've installed it you inflate it quickly to size.
Most American cars have them inflated already so its rare to see spares deflated from the factory. People here also don’t carry air pumps with them so they’ll drive with a flat tire to the nearest tire shop.
Honestly, it does feel expensive at first glance, but modern EVs are packaged really tightly around battery space, weight, and efficiency.
A lot of manufacturers don’t even include spare tires anymore, so when they offer one it almost becomes an optional accessory package instead of standard equipment.
You’re usually paying for more than just the tire too — the wheel, jack points, mounting hardware, storage setup, tools, and all the engineering needed to fit it safely into the vehicle.
I also think it depends a lot on lifestyle. If you mostly stay in cities/suburbs and already have AAA, roadside assistance, or Rivian roadside support, you might decide it’s not worth paying extra for a spare you may rarely use.
But if you road trip, camp, go into rural areas, or spend time off pavement, having an actual spare starts looking a lot more reasonable pretty quickly.
That said… $755 for a compact spare still feels a little on the high side.
You’re usually paying for more than just the tire too — the wheel, jack points, mounting hardware, storage setup, tools, and all the engineering needed to fit it safely into the vehicle.
Jack points, storage setup, and engineering are all sunk costs, though, right? Like, they're not changing the vehicle itself when you're ordering the spare tire, just adding equipment? I could be wrong.
Bullshit. The things still break down and need service work and will need to be jacked up, lifted, moved around.
Oh wait it's a Rivian they literally don't think about that shit, that's why a rear quarter hit to the tailgate/fender is a $42,000 fix that includes removing the windshield and roof.
No, I understood your poor attempt at sarcasm, I just took it all the way that no one at Rivian actually understands anything about designing a car, they're all techbros. Move fast, break things, like the insurance and car repair industries.
You’re usually paying for more than just the tire too — the wheel, jack points, mounting hardware, storage setup, tools, and all the engineering needed to fit it safely into the vehicle.
But that all exists.
They don't sell car #1 with Jack points cause you paid $755 and car #2 they're absent cause I didn't pay for it.
The physical body of the vehicle is not different between spare tyre and non spare tyres. Second hand buyers won't be able to advertise "optioned spare tyre" like sunroof / no sun roof.
All the engineering is there and exists. You just may or may not get a physical wheel and tyre.
Heated seats and wheel are included on standard. The website does a bad job when using the ‘compare’ page’ but when you click on learn more of the interior option you’ll see them listed.
I don't think they're accounting for range reduction with the larger wheels. On the Premium, it shows that the 20 and the 21 inch wheels both have a 330 mile EPA estimated range, which I find hard to believe.
That does seem unusual, but range is so dependent on specific tires and wheel aerodynamics that it's impossible to come to conclusions just based on wheel diameter
I will never buy a vehicle that uses an ipad for everything. They look like shit and they are unsafe. I prefer actual buttons and knobs that you can use with muscle memory and not have to take your eyes off the road.
You do know they designed it specifically with buttons, scroll wheels, and nobs in mind. It also has the super cool new AI voice assists. This might be the first real usable integration of AI into a vehicle I have seen.
I think that goofy front end is what makes them so cool.
I'd totally buy one if it didn't have the lock-in to their software stack and paying them forever for a data connection when I have all of that on my phone.
Who are these made for? If you want more luxury the new Euro EV SUVs have more range and features and are more luxurious and is anyone actually going to be off roading these or is it just gonna be a Costco pavement pounder?
You're vastly overestimating how many people actually care about specs to that degree versus how many people primarily buy on appearance. If range and features for the price were actually that important to people then toyota would sell none of their trucks because they get barely over 320 miles of range with dingy plastic interiors for $10k over competitors. And if people only bought on reliability then land rover and every brand in stellantis would have gone out of business decades ago.
People love boxy and sharp angles and the fact that wrangler and g wagon have been in production for decades and are staples of the automotive industry proves that people always have. Despite the reliability and driving dynamics of the former and obscene price for the latter. And everything coming out of kia and hyundai these past few years and their massive increase in popularity proves that there is a big resurgence in demand for boxy, despite their very bad reliability reputation.
I personally bought a bronco sport recently because it was the boxiest thing I could get new while staying in the 30s, and because I love the way it looks. It reminds me a lot of my land rover discovery 2 and nothing else in the compact SUV segment deviates from a used bar of soap in shape. Specs wise I get average fuel economy and range, the interior does what I need, and I have a warranty and don't intent to drive the same thing for more than 15 years regardless of vehicle. I paid a small price premium to get something that is more suited to offroad than the average crossover despite having never gone offroading, but because one day I might but that was also irrelevant. What a rav4 or a CRV bring to the table on reliability, or what an X1 or model Y in features, or what a tiguan, rogue, sportage, or CX5 would have brought in price savings but would never do for me, is give me that feeling of loving the way my car looks every time I go out to it.
The R2 is exactly that kind of vehicle but EV and in a higher price bracket. Every argument that I made for my car someone can make for R2 against anything it competes with in that price. And considering bronco sport sells +125k units per year in the most crowded market segments there is, that says to me that R2 will do just fine even if you can technically get more for the money.
Most buyers will realistically use them as daily drivers, road trip vehicles, Costco runs, commuting, kid hauling, etc. But that’s also true for a huge percentage of SUVs that look off-road capable.
I think Rivian’s target market is basically people who want something between a luxury EV crossover and a hardcore off-road truck.
A lot of the European EV SUVs focus heavily on luxury/performance pavement driving, while Rivian seems to be targeting the “adventure lifestyle” crowd — people who ski, camp, mountain bike, deal with snow, forest roads, bad weather, or just want something that feels a little more rugged and versatile without going full Jeep or Bronco.
Most owners probably won’t be rock crawling, but there’s still a real difference between “can comfortably handle snow, fire roads, and camping trails” vs “pure pavement luxury crossover.”
A lot of people just want versatility and capability without sacrificing daily usability.
I was hoping for a tri or quad version to be snuck in there. I'm not on the market yet. Probably a year or two. Maybe one will pop up then. It's a tempting vehicle though.
Bold isn't really how I'd describe the blue or the greens as they appear to be on the more muted/inoffensive shade of things but the purple is certainly interesting. It's definitely a more muted range without the yellow or red.

StrongOnline007@reddit
Is it? I'm not an expert but from what I've read it seems like the current R2 is almost a stopgap until they can launch the real next-gen hardware in 2027. Current R2 will gain some advantages but fundamentally is a different car https://riviantrackr.com/news/why-you-should-wait-for-the-rivian-r2-with-lidar-and-gen-3-hardware-instead-of-buying-the-launch-edition/

Bold isn't really how I'd describe the blue or the greens as they appear to be on the more muted/inoffensive shade of things but the purple is certainly interesting. It's definitely a more muted range without the yellow or red.

Not Beige, but for sure still following the current puddy/muted color palette that is common in the car world.

Yea the purple is cool. I was just hoping for the Compass Yellow again.

Unless I'm missing something theres zero beige options. At best a silver & a gray? You can get it in purple!
