The girl crush I had on her. Made me realize i could be attracted to women too. I wanted her look sooooo bad. One of the reasons I went red in high school. I was part of the goth/freak crowd so she lived in my head rent free. Loved the music too. The perfect package for my grumpy alternative ass.
Metamorphica_0226@reddit
Bend me break me any way you need me all I want is you?
epidemicsaints@reddit (OP)
Found these scans on an ancient tumblr. I upped the contrast to make the text somewhat readable.
Sarkastik-Overlord@reddit
Laughed out loud to myself when I saw this - I had a physical copy of this issue until a few months ago when I finally decluttered my old collection of magazines.
GrumpyKaeKae@reddit
Ong my two crushes
PrivateEnis@reddit
I had this too. She's so awesome!
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
hackermannn01@reddit
Excellent share!
ZeusBruce@reddit
"I want a man who will let me pee in his belly button"
Now THERE'S a quote lmao
Commies-Fan@reddit
Sounds good to me. Ive always loved her.
fatbrucelee@reddit
This always sat parked in my mind for a long time, never sure where I heard it but I never took the time to look it up and forgot about it, until today.
schwing710@reddit
She wants a man who’s only happy when it rains
JHerbY2K@reddit
Happy hours, golden showers, on a cruise to freak you out
SnooDoggos3479@reddit
I remember reading this quote online as an adolescent and having a complete sexual awakening: “wait, you can do that???”
BigBagunzca@reddit
I remember reading this article back in the day when it was published. I also remember thinking, "what the fuck?!" when I read that line. My poor teenaged mind that day... 🤣
atari2600forever@reddit
We had an extended discussion about this quote in the dorm. I miss college.
habitualtroller@reddit
I was thinking about the fellas who have an outie and must feel bad.
wosmo@reddit
I love how they've got that right on the page break so it hits you in the face as you flip through. I hope that wasn't an accident
70camaro@reddit
"Thou shalt honor my deep depressions but don't dare have them yourself."
schwing710@reddit
Clearly an old article from when every dude wore boxers. A horrible aspect of the ‘90s tbh. So uncomfortable.
Mr_SunnyBones@reddit
listen ..they replaced Y fronts for a lot of us .. it was a better time
epidemicsaints@reddit (OP)
"Boxers are sexy" was one of the dumbest manufactured girl talk topics ever. Having to shake your scrotum free from your leg is not hot.
tryingisbetter@reddit
Boxers are way more comfortable than underwear/briefs
epidemicsaints@reddit (OP)
I think a big part of it is what kind of fit you prefer for your pants. They are absolute torture for me and worse than not wearing underwear at all.
schwing710@reddit
I’m glad we’ve largely moved on from that trend as a society
habitualtroller@reddit
Boxer-briefs are where it’s at
GarblingCumfarts@reddit
Going from tighty-whities to boxers was freeing, but boxer-briefs couldn't come soon enough.
DrewBaron80@reddit
I recently transitioned to boxer briefs full time (as opposed to just when exercising) and there’s no going back.
Jokierre@reddit
The closest I’d ever get! Me circa 1995.
OkTacoCat@reddit
I thought I recognized you for a second and then realized you could be 50% of the men I knew in the 90’s. 😂
Jokierre@reddit
Ha, no doubt! One more from the same meet.
moleculariant@reddit
Bowling shirt was mandatory for a man's wardrobe then. You had to have at least one. You know, for those bowling shirt occasions.
Mr_SunnyBones@reddit
..yeah , ..this checks out
Jokierre@reddit
Combined with Jnco and Docs was also fair play
DengarLives66@reddit
Not No Doubt, Garbage!
Jokierre@reddit
Ha, absolutely
ArthurBea@reddit
Absolute Garbage, their best of album from 2007!
Jokierre@reddit
Ha, found the #1 fan!
epidemicsaints@reddit (OP)
Amazing!
morbidemadame@reddit
Why is this so accurate tho. 😂
jcstrat@reddit
How did we all basically look like that back then?!
halfcookies@reddit
Cool you met Dweezil Zappa?
Jokierre@reddit
You think I’m Dweezil on the right, or was that a general question? (I haven’t)
BluEydMonster@reddit
Shirley Manson is a Goddess!!
bigg_beef@reddit
The photo from that article is a core memory for me
noonesaidityet@reddit
I had this poster on my wall through junior high and high school, and the thing I will never forget about it was how long her thumb looks. I had one girlfriend (who had cutout pictures of dudes on her walls) demand I take it down. I did not take it down.
Atillion@reddit
Damn. I'm going to spin Sixteen Stone front to back for the first time in decades now.
Josephthebear@reddit
Magpie_Coin@reddit
I remember reading this article! I loved her then and love her now! Brave and talented!
jeremy1015@reddit
She was a really good actress in that ill faded one season terminator TV show.
Meatball-Alfredo-Mom@reddit
I always had such a girl crush on her 😂
tryingisbetter@reddit
Oddly, I've always found her both attractive, and very unattractive.
a_phantom_limb@reddit
Was it, perhaps, a "#1 Crush"?
Final-Standard9866@reddit
Ah, my favorite stalker song.
xenniac@reddit
One of the many women of the era who made me realize I'm gay. Crush Crush Crush.
JayRay_44@reddit
Me and you both…
BorderlinePaisley@reddit
I think it moved.
mammajess@reddit
I, a redhead, read this at about 16 years old. Instant confidence boost 😁
el_pinko_grande@reddit
I, alas, did not, and I could've used it, because as my school's only ginger, my pubes were a constant topic of conversation in the boy's locker room.
mc1rmutant_@reddit
My damn mother asked me if they were red. I lied.
el_pinko_grande@reddit
Well, username checks out.
JHerbY2K@reddit
Shirley lit a fire for me (straight guy) and I’ve been more or less obsessed with red heads ever since. You are so rare though - sigh.
MSK84@reddit
Wow do women think a lot about absolutely everything lol
letterstosnapdragon@reddit
15 year old me had such a crush on her!
urbanlife78@reddit
I forgot about Details magazine
ImOnlyHereForTheCoC@reddit
Would you say you were fuzzy on the Detaiils?
urbanlife78@reddit
epidemicsaints@reddit (OP)
It died a strange death thinking it had to match the energy of Stuff and Maxim, instead of staying an alternative to those. Tried to back pedal but it was too late, and magazines at large started falling like dominoes.
urbanlife78@reddit
I don't think I even remember that, but this is one of those magazines I had a subscription to. I miss those days but they are also mostly unnecessary now.
Jimmy3671@reddit
Shirley Manson and Saffron from Republica both shaped my taste in women for a long time.
ImOnlyHereForTheCoC@reddit
Gotta throw Miki from Lush in the mix
touslesmatins@reddit
And Louise from Sleeper
epidemicsaints@reddit (OP)
I saw Saffron on 120 Mins or something, wearing black vinyl jeans with the knee torn open and never stopped thinking about it. Toni from Curve too.
touslesmatins@reddit
Core memory unlocked! I had this issue. Details was such a good magazine RIP. Loved Shirley Manson then and now. I remember copying her nail polish where she'd do one red stripe down the middle instead of painting the whole nail. Ah good times
aliencardboard@reddit
Shirley was the “dirty” girl of rock before Haley of Paramore who has always been borderline sultry but you know she’s a lot like Shirley. Just different generations. Female rockstars are the best. 🔥
KurtVonnegutWasRight@reddit
I remember this issue well!
My ex got this issue in the mail in Summer of '96 while we were living together, and I pored over it, because it had a very sad article about the aftermath of Shannon Hoon's recent fatal overdose. I was a big Blind Melon fan from '92-'94.
Annual_Grass538@reddit
maybe-an-ai@reddit
Teenagers have a lot of sex pretending it doesn't happen doesn't help anyone.
Annual_Grass538@reddit
I didn’t. Plenty of people didn’t and don’t now.
jbird3000@reddit
We found the beach ball.
SignificantApricot69@reddit
While that’s certainly true, I was 19 and considered a late bloomer (xennial here)
Annual_Grass538@reddit
A late bloomer as explained by child sex addicts yeah? Ever thought that maybe you bloomed at an appropriate time?
Number1Framer@reddit
You sure seem to spend a lot of time and energy dwelling on this. Have you considered talking to someone about this very particular something you have a clear obsession with?
epidemicsaints@reddit (OP)
Talking about sex you had as a teenager?
Annual_Grass538@reddit
With an adult and publishing it for adults to read it. It’s child pornography.
JeremyPivensPP@reddit
Your skull is just a place to keep your teeth, huh?
Inglorious186@reddit
Medical_Solid@reddit
Dolly Parton has a similar interview but she said, “I was doing things at an age that would shock most people who didn’t grow up in country areas. That’s all I’m gonna say about that.”
BloodyPaleMoonlight@reddit
What are you talking about?
Annual_Grass538@reddit
If this were a video of a 15 year old it would be classified as child pornography. Why does it being written get a pass?
papsmeered@reddit
Have you ever been tested for a learning disability?
BloodyPaleMoonlight@reddit
The only thing in this article that could possibly refer to her teenage years is her talking about a boy who was the first to make her feel good about having red hair.
Everything else she talks about seems to refer to her outlook on sex in general, which was just as likely to refer to her experiences as an adult than at any other time.
If you read this article and think all the things she's talking about are things she's done as a child, the problem isn't the article - it's you.
FreddyNoodles@reddit
Very obviously the problem is them.
mlvassallo@reddit
It’s not a video, it’s an anecdote shared by the person with consent. This is big virgin energy.
Annual_Grass538@reddit
Lol this is why I’ve always hated all of my peers. K go on pretending this is good.
jayne-eerie@reddit
She was 30 at time (1996), reflecting back on consensual sex she had in 1981 -- pre-AIDS, post-pill, which from what I've heard was the golden age of "everybody is shagging everybody." It woul;dn't get published today, but for the era it's entirely normal.
I miss how people used to acknowledge sometimes teenagers had sex and enjoyed it.
epidemicsaints@reddit (OP)
Don't stop at your peers, it's probably everybody.
spaltavian@reddit
Pretending what is good? What the fuck are you talking about?
bosco9@reddit
This is like something some gen z would say
Annual_Grass538@reddit
Born in 87.
spaltavian@reddit
Because it isn't you ding bat.
BurnabyMartin@reddit
Oh Shirley. We could have been so good together.
LastChime@reddit
Original Gran Turismo soundtrack baybee!!
Least-Task276@reddit
As Heaven is Wide, I loved that song
elkniodaphs@reddit
They used to make bold choices for racing games. Test Drive games used to have Fear Factory. Everything is EDM now.
UbiquitousBot@reddit
This cover instilled some bisexual panic in me.
epidemicsaints@reddit (OP)
From bi-curious to bi-sureious.
MasterDave@reddit
I don't think it was this one but there was ANOTHER article in a magazine of a similar style back then where she also talked about guys having to just deal with the fact that there's piss and shit in your vag and you still have to go down on a dirty cooch if she's asking for it or you're not worthy.
Kind of an odd thing to be focused on really.
I don't know why but it always left me with the impression that Shirley Manson didn't have really good toilet habits.
bubbles630481@reddit
This issue was like 45% of my bisexual awakening.
epidemicsaints@reddit (OP)
I felt embraced by this magazine as a queer kid. LOVED it.
LateEvening6026@reddit
This came out when I was in high school and it blew my mind! She’s a queen!
anOvenofWitches@reddit
Details was my “men’s magazine” in that I started a subscription when I turned 18.
I can tell you that monochrome, blues and pastels were big in Spring 1996. Also recall reading the words “bacne” and “chimples” for the first time.
Texas_Kimchi@reddit
Man I was HOOKED on her.
Dessert_Allegedly@reddit
Ahhh Shirley was my first hardcore girlcrush. I'd always been attracted to women, but she was the first time I understood that it wasn't just an aesthetic admiration--I LIKED girls! I saw Garbage in high school (skipped school to drive to a concert, hell yeah) and it was an experience.
jcstrat@reddit
Oh shit that band is amazing and I didn’t realize they did something with her!
Dessert_Allegedly@reddit
It's SUCH a good video, but uh...it will make you Feel Things
xenniac@reddit
I just said a similar thing in another reply. Ha. But yeah, same. She helped me realize I was gay. I wanted her.
imokquestionmark@reddit
Got a chance to meet her and film her on stage a few years ago. Very cool!
hobbes_shot_second@reddit
My favorite Terminator.
mlvassallo@reddit
TIL I’m too depressed for Shirley Manson.
BuckManscape@reddit
She’s only happy when it rains.
epidemicsaints@reddit (OP)
She hates my favorite underwear. I'm gay tho so it doesn't matter. And I probably like them for the same reason she hates them, so in a way we agree.
Lotan@reddit
When Version 2.0 came out, my friend and I drove to LA from Phoenix. They were doing a sort of “Secret” show to prep for their European tour (Before the NA tour).
We were broke as shit and got there super early and once we had paid for parking we couldn’t afford to move the car, so we kind of just hung by the venue. A few hours before the show I walked to a hamburger joint and when I got back, there was a crowd forming. It turned out the band was there and everyone was crowding around Shirley to get an autograph.
I joined in and made it to the front eventually. I didn’t have anything to sign. I just had a half eaten hamburger in my hand. For some reason my idiot 18 year old brain decided I should offer her a bite, but I was so nervous that I sort of just held it up in her direction and then after a long pause ran off like an idiot.
epidemicsaints@reddit (OP)
Version 2.0 was in the first order I placed online with my first debit card! Got it on CDNow along with Aphex Twin's Windowlicker VHS.
jcstrat@reddit
I still have both of those!
manapiko@reddit
She's awesome! I met her a few years back at a RTJ show at the Palladium. She was so freakin cool and chill.
comprehensivewarning@reddit
Ugh!!❤️
AmputeeHandModel@reddit
She was so hot. And apparently a little bit of a freak.
CountVanillula@reddit
Is it just me or there a bit of a kerning problem on that cover? I spent more than a moment trying to figure out why the music was Sue.
Unfortunate-Incident@reddit
I saw them in concert is 97 or 98. During a song, there was a quiet part where all music stopped and the lights went out and I yelled as loud as I possibly could "I love you Shirley Manson". I'm pretty sure she heard me. It was in an arena.
matthewmartyr@reddit
She heard. I was there. When she went backstage everyone clapped!
Lauuson@reddit
Can confirm. I was one of the clappers.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
She was right on about depression.
love_is_an_action@reddit
The video for Push It is my favorite music video. I’m sad it’s trapped in the 4:3 aspect ratio & low res, because it’s so visually terrific.
Also, I love OP’s user pic.
cloudydays2021@reddit
I still have this issue!
riverguava@reddit
Just whatever you do, no beachballs 😂
schwing710@reddit
Freeball > Beach Ball
Tuckermfker@reddit
Man, I meet all her requirements, but I was only 15 at the time.
bassbeatsbanging@reddit
I remember all my straight friends were quite big fans of hers. I imagine kleenex and lotion stocks went up significantly after their US debut
AgreeableAardvark852@reddit
She was very attractive back then. This helped the band’s appeal.
RogerClyneIsAGod2@reddit
"Get down, get busy, or get out."
I need this on a shirt. STAT!!
OoT-TheBest@reddit
Version 2.0 tour in 98 is still one of my best concert experiences. What an insane follow up album, and then a perfect setlist for the show
Wise-Tourist-6747@reddit
This pick me energy of the 90s takes me back 🥴
spaltavian@reddit
Pretty shitty to say a 30 year old successful woman is a "pick me" just because she's willing to talk about sex openly. I find the lack of young millennial/Zoomer Puriteen energy refreshing.
epidemicsaints@reddit (OP)
I kind of get what they meant but this is a sexy article for a men's magazine of course it's gonna be come hithery. It's exactly why I loved Details, and so did lots of women.
epidemicsaints@reddit (OP)
Do you remember the convo where girls would talk about whether they would have sex with Angelina Jolie or Drew Barrymore? It was always those two. Very tongue ring.
Trixie1143@reddit
This sold a lot of records.
jayne-eerie@reddit
I think I bought this issue when it came out! Shirley is such a role model.
