What is your favourite building in the UK and why? đ đ˘đđđ

Found myself mulling this over yesterday (not sure Iâve decided on a favourite yet) and intrigued by other peopleâs views.
It can be anything from your own house, to a famous landmark, to somewhere with sentimental value and beyond! Photos encouraged.

Itâs actually not particularly interesting but I like the Shard. This is purely because I watched it being built from the train when I was going into London for eye hospital appointments every other month as a child. It always made me think of Lego when it was being built.Â

St Pancras for me. Gorgeous old exterior, modern functional interior. National and international transport hub.
richboyadler@reddit
the OG core office in derby that a small team of 6 people made the original tomb raider games ! I havenât personally been myself but i love how they used this place as inspiration for her manor in game. also this is an office and its got such a nice exterior!

âThe Cathedral on the Hillâ period.

Blackpool Tower.
Yes, I know Blackpool is a bit shit and it was probably a bit shit back when I was a kid too, but I loved the arcades, the Pleasure Beach, the illuminated trams, and especially The Sandcastle.

Castell Coch in Wales đ´ó §ó ˘ó ˇó Źó łó ż Because of this beautiful ceiling!
JLaws23@reddit
LOVE a colourful church like this!
history_roadtrips@reddit
It's a castle, but yes :)
DangerousRave@reddit
Interior - Liverpool cathedral. It's breathtaking
Exterior - not as clear cut but probably Edinburgh Castle, that setting is, I think, unmatched

The Palm House in Kew Gardens - I love it in the cooler and colder months. I love all the big greenhouses in Kew Gardens but the Palm House is absolutely my favourite - the humidity and the smell just bring a level of nostalgia (went there many weekends as a kid in the late 90s and early 2000s) and botanical exoticness. I love how it functions so well despite the age of the structure.
Next year it will close down for a multi-year renovation so I hope I can get some visits in during the late Autumn and the beginning of winter this year.

Lichfield cathedral sa place I go to when I need peace.

When you posted this, I was stood looking at it!
banwe11@reddit
The Coventry cathedral complex - I find the old cathedral very moving and a great place for personal reflection, and the new cathedral is very impressive and the brutalist architecture makes me think about the optimism of the post-war era that we sadly seem to lack today.

Natural History Museum in London.
Shadow-sight@reddit
Came in to say the same!! NHM London is one of my favourite places!!
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
That is stunning. Went recently and have as many pictures of the carvings on the internal stonework as the dinosaurs.
Specialist_Heron4446@reddit
It is a breathtaking building, but it is just too big to photograph completely. The carvings on the exterior are amazing, and that main hall with the staircase just blew my mind. I just wish I could have spent many hours there but it was closed when I had time to see it and crowded when I finally did.
insertitherenow@reddit
The Corn Exchange in Leeds is pretty beautiful.
EUskeptik@reddit
If I am allowed three buildings close together, they would be Liverpoolâs âThree Gracesâ - the Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Mersey Docks & Harbour Company building.
If I am only allowed one, it would be the Liver Building.
LowAioli3870@reddit
I once worked in the Cunard building. It was very grand and beautiful inside. Visitors are free to enter the ground floor of the Port of Liverpool building.
EUskeptik@reddit
Thanks, I lived in Liverpool until I was 21 but these buildings were closed to the public in those days. Iâd like to see the interiors, maybe next time I visit.

Lincoln Cathedral - just stunning.
Wedonthavetobedicks@reddit
Whilst this would also be my choice for personal sentimental reasons, I would like to complain about how I can't ever take a photo that seems to accurately portray how it dominates the skyline to my naked eye.
JLaws23@reddit
I went to Lincolnâs inn for the Easter Mass and it was just spectacular. Completely hidden gem.
Natural_Trick4934@reddit
Obligatory âUsed to be the tallest building in the worldâ fact.

Yes. My favourite too. I donât think there is another building in Britain as breathtaking.

Humber BridgeÂ
Yes I know it's a bridge and bridges are a bit dull, especially ugly 70s/80s bridges made of concrete and steel.Â
But the engineering behind it, the fact it was basically 3D Printed 40+ years ago, the massive cables and the pillars that are further away at the top because of the curvature of the earth... It's fascinating.
And the fact that you can stand at a point on the bridge and watch it move in real time.Â
I just really really like it a lot. It's a fantastic walk, a fantastic view and an amazing feat of engineering and hard graft.Â
Mr5wift@reddit
Plus it was the longest single span suspension bridge in the world when it opened in 1981. Held that title until 1998.

Durham Cathedral for me. It somehow feels absolutely massive and imposing while also weirdly peaceful inside, and the view of it from across the river genuinely looks like something out of a fantasy film.
MahatmaAndhi@reddit
Peterborough Cathedral.
I love churches, cathedrals and most historic buildings. But I'm biased towards this one. It's objectively a banger of a building to anyone, but I've grown up seeing it. I've walked and cycled around it thousands of times.
It's baffling to think how much history has taken place in and around its walls.

St Bartholomew The Great Church in Smithfield.
High culture=Serene in its greatness. Beautiful in its nature. Home to one of the best choirs in all of Christendom.
((Low culture=As featured in Shakespeare in Love, Avengers, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Robin Hood, Elizabeth, Sherlock Holmes etc etc))

I have a sneaking fondness for a modern Gothic office block at 10 Fleet Street, London. It is just a very striking building.
PhilosopherBitter177@reddit
I bit new, but Tide (Southbank in London) is pretty cool. Even though itâs brick theyâve used some cool new (for buildings) ideas to create an organic wave like pattern in bricks.

Durham Cathedral. It makes the city beautiful, it is a literally awe inspiring building and it drips history. It's also connected to a significant part of my life and so on my rare visits it provokes a massive sense of nostalgia.
