Avoid GoTrax - GoTrax Rambo Fat Tire - The $850 60-hour bike and GoTrax's repair hostage clause

In late April I bought an $850 E-Bike from GoTrax (the Rambo Fat Tire) as a birthday gift to my son. We were also moving so it was a peace offering, in that he would be able to traverse the new town easily and make friends. I assembled the bike per the instructions on Friday, April 24th. It worked for 2.5 days and midday and fully-charged on Monday, April 27th was dead. Shut off mid-ride, far from the house on a mountain-town. 60 hours from being built or so, and the $850 bike was dead.
I verified the battery is fully charged, and contacted support. After 11 days of them barely even reading my email (Asking questions detailed in the first email over again after 11 days) I requested it be expedited.
They assume it's the controller and sent a new one on May 14th. I let them know, repeatedly, that it was coming up on the 30-day return window and I had no faith. They sent the part and let me know there was no instructions or fix, but they were hoping to get one from the Parts department.
Three weeks out and a ruined birthday later, we are still waiting. I let them know I'd probably just return it, and they said "For clarity, I will let you know that we cannot accept a return request for refund now that the warranty process has progressed. Our policy states that we cannot go back and forth between the warranty and refund process, so this bike is no longer eligible for refund."
So they ruined my sons birthday with a 60-hour $800+ bike, got me a part that they are having me install (despite lack of experience), and don't have a video or instruction to, and are holding our money hostage banking on this hopeful repair.

I wouldn't buy a budget bike unless you're experienced in bike repair/maintenance. They usually require lots of adjustments and part replacement/upgrades. I have a budget bike, I expected some quality control issues and found several. Had to request some replacement parts and install them myself. A little annoying, but the bike was dirt cheap.

idk if i'd call $850 dirt cheap but 60 hours was certainly a surprise lol
pinkprius@reddit
It's a fair price for a normal bicycle.
But not for an additional charger, motor and a 500wh battery.
A battery from Bosch for one of their ebikes is 500$ alone. Because they have quality control, good cells in there and they actually have as many watt hours as stated.

I had a similar experience with GoTrax when I bought a hover board for my son. Same thing - it just died within a couple of days and I wasn’t able to return it too. So lesson learnt, no more GoTrax for us.

And THAT'S the problem with all these DTC ebike companies!
Unlike Aventon and Veloctric, there's no bike shop readily available for repairs or consultation.
At least with Amazon and Walmart, you have a direct third party with which you can communicate and you also have the option of purchasing 3 years warranty that's enforced by either Walmart or Amazon.
Also, with Walmart you have 30 days to return the bike back to any Walmart location on many of their bikes!
IAmGroot6936@reddit
Walmart actually doesn't allow ebike returns to the store, they have to be shipped back (referring to buying an ebike from the Walmart app which is full of third party sellers). The ebikes physically sold at Walmart are meh..
Zentransit@reddit
While that remains true for far too many, the fact is that Walmart has certain in-house brands that they cater to and fully support.
That's especially so, when it comes to ebikes like the Huffy, the Concord, and Gotrax brands.
Some bikes are even allowed to be returned within 90 days instead of the usual 30 days.

Sounds like you got what you paid for. There are a million posts on this subreddit cautioning people about cheap e-bikes
NORTHERNTWITCH@reddit
it aint a cheap ebike though... its damn near a thousand bucks

My cheap puckipuppy is over 3 years old and still going strong. It was a cheap bike and I gotten more then I paid for. Friend purchased a expensive bike from a bike shop think its a trek. He had nothing but problems, while his has parts available easily they are expensive. So it kinda comes down to luck of the draw in some cases. While most cheap ebikes are garbage not all of them are. You need to do research on the brand first.

Not sure why you were down voted. Any Ebike can have electrical issues. A loose connector can cause the bike to stop working for instance. Like cars today, many people do absolutely no maintenance until something is broken.

Chargeback
Mission_Fold808@reddit (OP)
I've never filed a chargeback, I'll have to look into this for sure.
IngsWarrior_@reddit
You have all the proof that you need to give to your bank when you file chargeback.

I have a go trax bike with 900km on it and never had any issues. I’m sorry this is happening to you. My father bought an e bike of Amazon (Burchda e bike) he rode it for 2 days and the bike completely stopped. The battery was fully charged however the bike didn’t turn on. We checked all the connections to make sure nothing got unplugged. We brought the bike to a local bike shop. He tested the battery voltage and the battery was showing no power. Apparently E batteries has an “safety” BMS system. its computer-based, centralized control system that monitors and manages a facility’s mechanical and electrical equipment. In other words it makes sure your bike doesn’t short circuit. So , we returned the battery to the company he bought the bike. They sent him a new battery and his bike is working without any issues now.
I hope this helps , good luck!

Year later my cheap Amazon ebikes still going great maybe it jist is luck of draw.
alex_c2616@reddit
3800 km on an EBE3 and no real issue yet.
Michael-Brady-99@reddit
One thing to try on any e-bike that is having electrical problems is to unplug and replug in all the connectors.
I’ve experienced issues before also where there was an issue with the signal from the brake lever that cuts the power to the motor.
Not sure exactly what your bike is doing or not but any Ebike can have issues because there are so many wires and systems in place to make it work.
Particular_Box_3598@reddit
This is why people caution against cheap ebikes. You should basically expect little to no customer support and shipping something that large is a huge cost, so allowing returns is basically impossible on those margins.

Duh

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the problem is your battery. Either bad bms or a bad cell
Fair-Discipline-1005@reddit
I'm sorry because od yours problems... But thanks, good to know...
Mission_Fold808@reddit (OP)
Thanks. I just hope more people learn that GoTrax has an attempted "if we try to repair it at all you can't return it" clause lmao. Hopefully they go broke.
Fair-Discipline-1005@reddit
I hope, You will find solution for this problems....👍
