The weight increase of the RS5 is making me really not excited for either the gas or electric M3 coming up...
I am sure the M3 won't gain almost 1400 lbs like the RS5, but i am sure it will gain quite a bit of weight.
Will probably make the CT5V Blackwing which is a class above seem like a lightweight sports car lol.
Imakeshittycardesign@reddit
The G84 M3 won’t be a PHEV though. They will add a mildhybrid system which is like 50kg. Should be a lot lighter than the M5 and RS5.
InsomniacAlways@reddit
Why is it called the G84? That doesn’t make any sense. We went from f80 > g80 > g84? Seems like a facelift not a successor lol
Captain_Alaska@reddit
The chassis code is a meaningless identifier for the manufacturer, it doesn't mean anything beyond the fact it stands for a certain vehicle.
InsomniacAlways@reddit
I hear you but for years the chassis code has at the very least made sense?
Captain_Alaska@reddit
Well no, with the M3 it's gone E30, E36, E46, E90/92/93, F80, G80/G81.
InsomniacAlways@reddit
Well yes, since the early 2000’s the codes have all made sense. I said for years, not forever
Captain_Alaska@reddit
Well they haven't, you've picked the one and only generation of M3 where they just changed the letter between gens.
InsomniacAlways@reddit
E92>F80>G80 still makes sense lol. I’m not saying it needs to follow a specific order
Captain_Alaska@reddit
Again, not even the regular 3 Series follows that format. The previous gen M5 went back a letter code relative to the standard model.
Gorgenapper@reddit
I'm just not excited anymore about this trend of making cars heavier and faster.
user289734@reddit
The CT5V and Giulia Quad are better drivers cars anyway
xTatamo@reddit
go buy one then , everyone says they are the best but no one wants one in the end
CharacterMedium558@reddit
People hate to hear this. Current gas BMWs including the M3 drive very much like an EV. An Ioniq 5N with less weight could easily replace the experience of many German cars with their automatic, turbo torque, and AWD system. Not to mention fake engine noise in many modern gas cars
assblast420@reddit
The current gen M3 is ~1730kg. A Model 3 Performance which in many ways matches it in terms of speed and handling, is ~1850kg. So ~120kg more.
I don't know why other manufacturers keep ending up with these ungodly heavy EVs/hybrids when Tesla has shown it's possible to keep the weight down.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
That is......
A very misguided statement.
The current M3 does the VIR lightning lap in 2:53.5. The model 3 performance did it in 2:58.4.
The Model 3 performance is more in line with an M440, Civic Type R, Golf R, etc.
assblast420@reddit
The weight is the point, not the specific details on the performance. It's close enough.
thejetssuckbigtime@reddit
I didn’t know some electric dildo is now a performance car benchmark.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
Oh I mean that's cuz the Tesla is orders of magnitude less refined. The M car is still a BMW underneath - NVH accounts for hundreds of pounds on these modern cars. Ground insulations, firewall insulation, broad cabin insulation, thicker glass, etc all adds up. Then you put on top of that the much more complicated suspension components and architecture.
I mean, don't get me wrong the modern 3 series is a porker, and sadly it took the 2 with it, but Tesla isn't a benchmark here. Those cars are comparable weight because tesla skimps on all sorts of shit, not because they're designed to be lighter.

LongjumpingLock5875@reddit
Not liking that a car gains 1400 lbs between a singular generation means I am fat?
That is quite the statement.
half_regard@reddit
statically, yes
Armored_Guardian@reddit
What if I am dynamically fat?
strongmanass@reddit
The RS5, M5, Panamera, and AMG GT 63SEFJRIEEKDK are PHEVs with big batteries for compliance purposes. They have two full powertrains. The M5 is heavier than the i5 and the Panamera hybrid is heavier than the Taycan.
The M3 and M5 BEV should weigh less than all those PHEVs.
FrozenUruguayBallbac@reddit
I actually wanna see how much the hellcat weighs when it comes back in 2028 based on the RS5 and M5 weight. I'm expecting 6k minimum
RevTurk@reddit
The only way I can see these cars loosing weight is when those new solid state batteries come out.
Multifaceted-Simp@reddit
You can tell it's heavy even in this picture
half_regard@reddit
much like your mom lol
AmNoSuperSand52@reddit
In the video you can see how much it leans in corners and lurches back under acceleration
half_regard@reddit
"how does suspension work?!?"
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Wish they could do the Neue Klasse looks w/o the (probably) hideous 7-series interior
Funeral_Goat_1446@reddit
3 tons probably.
