Stop fucking eating horse

Why? It's delicious

Because horses aren’t food

Are you vegetarian? If you're not, you might want to think about what makes some animals food and some not food, to you.

How does horse meat taste compared to commonly consumed animals in most parts of the world? Like beef or lamb perhaps?
LegalFan2741@reddit
It’s not a big deal. It’s sweet and somehow similar to beef but beef is better. I wouldn’t repeat my experience. I’m happy without horse meat.
HamHockShortDock@reddit
I don't imagine it's that different from maybe beef and pork because my college roommate had only been in the US for a couple years and one day at breakfast she told me that she thought the link breakfast sausage was horse.
Zealousideal_Gap5074@reddit
Were the sausage links beef or pork?
HamHockShortDock@reddit
They were pork but knowing horse is very lean I would assume it doesn't taste very much like pork.. but maybe she just had that style sausage/flavoring with horse and that superseded the taste of pork. I hope someone else answers but if I may continue talking out of my ass, I would assume that horse tastes more like venison than beef.
Zealousideal_Gap5074@reddit
I'm very curious because I can only assume there is a massive taste difference between beef and pork so it's tripping me up that it may have tasted like either one. I don't eat pork so I have no idea if it tastes like that. If it tastes like beef I can sort of wonder if I'd eat horse given the opporunity. I doubt that's legal where I am and I don't have any desire to do so but I can wonder
HamHockShortDock@reddit
Yeah, I was also confused but maybe she tasted the spices more than the meat. Pork is definitely way different from beef, I wouldn't think someone could mix up the two. It's fattier and if you've gone a long time without tasting it or if you never have, pork is probably surprisingly gamey.
lord_dude@reddit
Don´t listen to the comments op, i would devour this. I haven´t tried horse meat but i love the crystalized fat in corned beef 🤷♂️
LegalFan2741@reddit
It’s sweet and somehow similar to beef. Very lean. You don’t miss out on anything if you skip it. Rather just look at horses and pet them. They’re cute.

nervez@reddit

OkiDokiPanic@reddit
It's like a very lean flavorful beef. It can be a bit stringy/fiberous when stewed, but horse steaks are some of the best you can eat.
(I'm from Belgium and we eat horse regularly.)
yangstyle@reddit
Tell me more about this. Horse is a regular staple in Belgium? You can buy steaks in the supermarket? Do you BBQ horse meat? I would certainly put some in my smoker but I don't think I can get it here in the US.
OkiDokiPanic@reddit
You can get it at the supermarket, butchers', markets, anyplace that sells meats. You can also get it at most frites shops as fries with meat stew is a very common and popular dish and the most popular one from Coertjens has horse instead of beef.
It's easier to find than duck. It's very lean so not a popular bbq meat.
svwer@reddit
Horse is very common in many countries in Europe. Get it every time I see it on the menu. Kangaroo too.
COYSBannedagain@reddit
Not the UK, mainly France and Belgium.
BushWishperer@reddit
Very common in Italy, especially more in the south. I used to snack on horse strips (like small strips of horse meat that were cooked in the oven or something called sfilacci di cavallo.
svwer@reddit
And Switzerland, Austria, Germany, etc.
Finding_the_Abyss@reddit
It's not really that common in germany, at least not around where I live.
You can buy it at the butcher (not most supermarkets) and it is eaten every once in a while, but more as a delicacy rather than a staple protein option, if you know what I mean.
svwer@reddit
Yeah I only saw it in 2 or 3 places in Bavaria region.
JamFarmer_87@reddit
Kangaroo was gross and oily.
svwer@reddit
Certainly not. It's extremely lean and very tender. Very much like camel or elk.

Skiumbra@reddit
This checks out. I'm from a country where ostrich is an option, and it's also a lean meat. Haven't tried horse before personally, but I grew up riding them, so I have some idea of the anatomy and fat distribution.
ArtsyDarksy@reddit
Not doing very well, based on the size of the can.
bely_medved13@reddit
I had horse at a wedding in Kyrgyzstan. The flavor was like a very mild beef. Less gamey (weird because obviously beef isn't gamey), but nothing special, IMHO. I found the texture to be sort of off-putting because it's more tender and smoother than beef or mutton, but that was likely also due to the way it was prepared, which was poached in a mild broth with noodles and root vegetables, a traditional Kyrgyz dish.
I'm definitely curious about what a horse steak is like, but not curious enough to go out of my way.
SwissMargiela@reddit
We eat it with often with bernaise sauce and it’s super good
soggydave2113@reddit

Wheeeler@reddit
Horse is good, just graduated, now look for job
SirStocksAlott@reddit
From the looks of the can, horse is not doing well.
SalsaDraugur@reddit
Kinda like gamey beef. I mostly eat ground horse since I'm too cheap to buy beef, also horse sausages tend to agree more with my digestion than lamb/pork
rts93@reddit
In canned form it probably tastes like canned pork which tastes like canned chicken which tastes like canned beef.
Acegonia@reddit
It's like a super lean, very slightly gamer protein. I are horse regularly in Iceland. Mostly horse sausages/smoked hotels sausages which were fuckin deli ious, no notes
But also horse steak with humar (l'angostines) basically Icelandic surf and turf.
Id say horse steak has a kind of velvety texture. Not better than beef steak, but definitely enjoyable.

LadislavAU@reddit
Surely you’re meant to heat that up and not eat the solidified fat 😭
miregalpanic@reddit
Not necessarily. Leberwurst in jars can have that solidified fat and is not supposed to be heated. I mean, it is spreadable.
Skepsis93@reddit
The fat on top is an extra seal to prevent contamination, a pretty ancient meat preservation method. You can eat it, but that's not it's main purpose.
miregalpanic@reddit
It's completely common to eat fat like that, and not a absurdly gross thing at all like the overly dramatic people in this thread make it out to be, is the point.
zatalak@reddit
You spread it on the bread under the meat, it's delicious
bino420@reddit
i wonder if the layer of fat is traditional and it used to be required for the preparation/preservation process, but modern technology like sterilization & canning have rendered the fat (heh) relatively unnecessary, so the fat has now become a requirement to be the food item known as "[the word for Eastern European-style, wet, preserved horsemeat]"... 🤤
zach0011@reddit
Y'all are being way to analytical about this. Fat adds flavor and calories. There's no reason to remove fat that was there naturally from cooking the product.
Skepsis93@reddit
Horse meat is pretty lean, I wouldn't expect that much fat to render out of horse meat while cooking.
Here is an online description of one product that lists beef fat as an ingredient, which is what I suspect is poured over top during the canning process.
HardLithobrake@reddit
You can eat tushonka cold.

Where can I warm up canned food at the zoo?
VeryDefinitionOfFail@reddit
This may be the funniest comment I've ever read. I know you aren't meaning it to be, but the fact that eating canned horse meat at a zoo with solidified fat is normal to you is hilarious. And you question why someone would ask about warming it up 😭😂
coolguyhentaisenpai@reddit
In places like siberia. Young wild horses tend to die over the harsh winters so they slaughter them and use them wholey and effeciently rather than end up some romantic frozen corpse on the tundra. So, normal is relative but we dont have to be so serious about it either. The timing and nonchalant delivery IS hilarious.
VeryDefinitionOfFail@reddit

Wrong. The Blue Hawaiian Zero Sugar is above all
Pfeffi-Ultra@reddit
I'm currently revisiting all flavors again because they were on sale to adjust my previous rating (I got a spreadsheet for that). White sits at a rating of 2 (tastes like water) and shares its last place with Ultra Strawberry for not tasting like strawberry and being an insult to its description. Current winners are Ultra Peach and Ultra Watermelon with a 4.5 respectively, followed by Absolutely Zero (Black/Blue) and Ultra Fiesta Mango with 4 respectively. Most are 3 and 3.5.
RevolutionaryTap394@reddit (OP)
If it's sold in every Ukrainian supermarket, it means someone is drinking
Finding_the_Abyss@reddit
I'm not a monster/energy drinker myself, but afaik white monster is one of the more popular ones.
Can on comment on it's intensity compared to other options? Kinda curious :D
Pfeffi-Ultra@reddit
Monster varies from region to region. Here in Germany it should have about 300mg of caffeine, so about 3 cups of coffee. I drink it over the span of 3 hours, because my kidneys are very damaged, but it's okay, the dosage feels fine to me. I'm a chipper little feller when I got my Monstar. Don't mix with alcohol, that's dumb as hell and don't slam one after another. Kid in the US died one day because of it. It's unlikely this would happen unless you have pre-existing conditions, but not knowing about any doesn't mean you don't have any, so do be careful. I love a can after a workout and the L-carnitine (not sure how much the concentration is) would be good in that respect too. Tastes a lot better than any Rockstar. I recall I used to like Reign better but it's not available anymore as it seems.
Pfeffi-Ultra@reddit
Yeah it's one of the most available flavors. But then most people seem to have shit taste.

Is horse cheaper than other meat?
RevolutionaryTap394@reddit (OP)
No, chicken meat is the cheapest and most popular in Ukraine
Buttercup4869@reddit
Cannot speak for the Eastern European case but in the cases, where I bought horse for stews it tended to be more expensive than supermarket beef and roughly in the same range if not a bit more expensive than better beef.
It is more of a specialty product around here though.
External-Ad-6098@reddit
What’s the protein ?

Horse meat, please do try to keep up

Fucks sake, lighten up.
LadySayes@reddit
Way to overreact to a gif; I was just pointing out how absolutely silly it was of you to feel the need to comment “I’m not dumb tho” when literally nobody asked you.
