Am I the only one?

At one point the "Holy grail" of having a barn was to buy a lift so I could work on all my fun stuff. Well I've had a lift for some time and it's been great. What truly became the grail... a fully stocked bolt bin..
Solid_Enthusiasm550@reddit
A properly Sorted, bolt bin.👍
Solid_Enthusiasm550@reddit
I took a picture of some of the jar, fastener holders that I have mounted.
Darth_Vidur@reddit
I often make the joke with friends that I probably own more bolts than Home Depot. I remember when I was but l buying them individually and started buying them by the pound.
ThirdWelles@reddit
If I didn't do this, I'd never get shit done. They either go in the hardware rack, or stay in the box from McMaster
Reddit-mods-R-mean@reddit
Nice, one mistake. None of these are cap screws though
ZeroRain87@reddit (OP)
Aren't they technically still cap but not socket cap?
Roxella9@reddit
I work for a U.K. fastener business. ( and stiock bins at various manufacturers)
Cap screws generally refers to Socket caps ( Allen headed bolts )
H T ( High tensile ) Bots are not fully threaded.
H T Sets are fully threaded .
Your ‘Lock washers ‘ are spring washers .
Reddit-mods-R-mean@reddit
Huh… looks like you’re right. In 3+ decades on this planet i never heard hex screws called “hex cap” screws before.
Looks like cum on my face..
D-Dubya@reddit
I just spent 10 minutes staring at tables in Machinery's Handbook. Yes, the ANSI/ASME (B18.2....) standard for inch and metric fasteners refers to them as "hex cap screws". In practice nobody calls them that and would consider a SHCS the standard "cap screw".
ONE1-ZERO@reddit
When that’s not enough you’ll buy the bins empty and start storing and restoring factory hardware.
Chemical-Ad-1817@reddit
Nice 👍
bndn81@reddit
One big box for me, everything, and I sift through it with an old small trowel.
1986silverback@reddit
That is the single beat investment I ever did was having a bolt bin with new bolts... Saveea so much time for so little of a cost
ZeroRain87@reddit (OP)
Im currently tigging up exhaust. Was so nice to reach over and grab a non locking nut to spin on the v band flange by hand.
crzfirensfw@reddit
I got 6 bins like that stocked full from my last job that was closing the plant down. Picture
EEpromChip@reddit
Sexy!
Snoo50682@reddit
That's awesome
ZMAN24250@reddit
Can confirm. Stocked bolt bins are a huge quality of life improvement.
Also, find the store that sells by the pound and stock up.
IAMN0TSTEVE@reddit
Nope. Same here. Now just replace all with grade 8 hardware.
ZeroRain87@reddit (OP)
This is all grade 8 zinc coated metric
redsox985@reddit
Metric 8.8 =/= imperial grade 8. It's more like grade 5. You'd need 10.9 or 12.9 to meet or surpass grade 8.
That_Grim_Texan@reddit
So 10.9s?
SticksCunningham@reddit
Thank you for pointing out that metric and SAE bolt strength grading are different and that the numbers used don't cross over directly, I see people get it mixed up all the time.
It's hard to tell from the picture but to me it looks like there's only two digits in the grade, so likely class 8.8.
That_Grim_Texan@reddit
That's kinda what I was thinking, but that picture isn't great for identification.
IAMN0TSTEVE@reddit
Nice!
KiraDog0828@reddit
My step-dad built a pole barn and bought all the auto service equipment from a service station/garage that was going out of business. The equipment was old, but everything worked fine. It was awesome to be able to easily put a car up on a lift to work on it.
I only wish we’d put more effort into getting along with one another. I could have learned so much from him, but couldn’t stand being around him.
Cordura@reddit
I wish I had the discipline, but alas I do not. I have all my fasteners in different containers on a shelf
ALIENIGENA@reddit
Not all the same container? Which you then need to tip out on the bench and sorts through?
Cordura@reddit
No, in different boxes. Which I rummage through....
I began once to sort in bolts, nuts and washers, but when in my garage I spend time on my car - not my garage.
I have two kids, so garage time is scarce.
Klo187@reddit
You have two helpers for sorting nuts bolts and washers. Just gotta teach them the difference between metric and imperial bolts.
Cordura@reddit
That's easy. I have little to no imperial
punkassjim@reddit
I did my first (and so far, only) engine swap 23 years ago. Before sending the donor car to the scrapyard, I harvested every screw, nut, bolt, and washer from the thing. I put them in haphazard collections in little baggies, and put them in a 6”x6” cardboard box.
I’ve been picking through that box to great success on myriad other projects for 23 years, and still it’s heavy enough that I’m concerned I’ll tweak my back any time I take it out to rummage.
mbash013@reddit
I have the new stock like OP and the drawer of every random bolt from every project that I did not have the heart to throw out. Between the two collections, I am unstoppable.
cdsbigsby@reddit
Same, my work sent me a little metal bucket of popcorn for Christmas and as soon as I saw it I thought, 'as soon as that's empty, that will be great for putting bolts in in the garage'.
MischaBurns@reddit
Shortbread cookie tins, not only for sewing supplies 🤣
EEpromChip@reddit
Literally spent like $1,200 to have hardware on hand to be ready for whatever machine I have in the shop...
BoliverTShagnasty@reddit
I have a hardware store nearby that is going out of business. They currently have “up to 50% off“ signs, but every time I go in all of their nuts and bolts section is still just 5% off. 🤬 I’d love to back the truck up on metrics since I’ve been mostly SAE my whole life til a couple years ago.
ZeroRain87@reddit (OP)
Not a small chunk of change.. but this whole set up can be had for a couple hundred bucks, I believe..
BoliverTShagnasty@reddit
Thanks I may go that route once they finally close and I know they aren't going to discount their inventory. They likely have a buyer lined up for the aisles of racks/drawers of all that.
mikeypi@reddit
I made 3 of these. 20 harbor freight organizers each.
shaggyjake@reddit
I could appreciate this more if they were flange head but maybe that’s just my personal preference
juwyro@reddit
My local Pepboys was going out of business and everything was 75% off so I cleaned them out of their hardware. Plus a couple of decades and parts cars have culminated into an unorganized drawer with all kinds of hardware.
BeerJedi-1269@reddit
Ah my Pa has a similar drawer! Hes in his 70s and has been turning wrenches since hs. The drawer ALWAYS has what we need. I will inherit it someday... as he inherited some of these from his dad.
jbjhill@reddit
ZeroRain87@reddit (OP)
The level of anxiety and panic this drawer causes me...
zeromadcowz@reddit
Just hand a child the bolt you need a nut for and it’ll keep them busy for ages. I spent a lot of time as a child digging through the bin of bolts for my dad. He probably never organized them because it kept me occupied.
juwyro@reddit
My Lego collection as a kid prepped me for this. I would love to really organize it one day though.
sparkplugdog@reddit
Mines in a bucket I call the prayer bucket. You reach in and pray you find what you need
juwyro@reddit
I remember those days
ChemistAdventurous84@reddit
And you still frequent the fastener store, right?
juwyro@reddit
I'm usually covered but I do have to go sometimes.
Freakishly_Tall@reddit
I'm not far off that pile, but have a little organization. Kinda between that and OP.
I still find myself thinking, "fuck it, Bolt Depot will have the right thing to me in a couple days. I'll work on something else." more frequently than I really should.
Especially when every order winds up including, "eh, since I'm ordering, I'll get a few extra of these ... a few more of those... I think I need a ..."
cdsbigsby@reddit
See this is how it's supposed to be. It's sort of therapeutic to dig through and finally find the right one.
Radius8887@reddit
All of my bolts are in 10 or 15 5 gallon buckets completely unsorted
RCMike_CHS@reddit
Looks like a work center bin we had from Fastenal.
machinerer@reddit
Nope. I have a big bolt bin. 1/4" thru 3/4" bolts and such. It is such a timesaver when doing project work. Also McMaster Carr sells hardware at reasonable rates!
ImTheBanker@reddit
I have one for metric and Imperial. And a guy who comes to stock it.
9 times out of 10 if I need a nut and bolt I grab them from one of the many magnet trays scattered around my shop.
ZeroRain87@reddit (OP)
The shop i work for has a guy that stocks ours.. I stock mine... im not made of money. Haha
ImTheBanker@reddit
Ha, me either. That's part of why I almost never use them. Nice to have though.
CromulentPoint@reddit
The ability and willingness to organize isn’t my issue. Problem is, any time I consider such a purchase, I immediately equate that to what that money could buy me from the NPD (classic Mustang) catalog and I end up buying car parts instead.
derSchwamm11@reddit
I notice most of these are metric. Have you found a good source that isn't too expensive? I have a small stash of extras but something like this would be cost-prohibitive. Meanwhile tractor supply sells standards bolts by the pound..
JollyContribution950@reddit
I’ve got three of them from work and my nut and bolt bins are the only thing organized in my garage.
twostateguy@reddit
Buckets
chuck-u-farley-@reddit
Nope
jayfactor@reddit
Nahhhh a lot of stores close by for bolts, I NEED a lift lmao
Buzzz62@reddit
Mine go into a bucket :(
Possible_Move7894@reddit
OP would love Bolts and Nuts' website
RustBeltLab@reddit
That is really baller. I could see a situation where the garage itself becomes the project and you just park your daily in it.
ZeroRain87@reddit (OP)
The day job forces me to clean and tidy. The barn becomes a cluster after every sode gig or run at the project car. Then I habe to spend a day cleaning and organizing...
SuMoto@reddit
It’s definitely a dream. I’ve been on the hunt for a bolt rack just to store the hardware that I have (wood screws, anchor bolts, drywall screws, nails), the second one will have machine screws.
Dare I say, one for metric and one for imperial (Canadian problems).
ZeroRain87@reddit (OP)
I don't have a ton of use for standard.. but having a bin of them would be nice too.
CrazyTechWizard96@reddit
Nice.
Now add a 'used' bolt bin to it and Youa re at My level, including screw, nuts, washers.
New & Used.
And about 4 drawer set orgnizers for all the small stuff, from parts, to small tools, small moduels, fuses, etc etc etc.
Yea I know, when You reach that level You feel like everything before that was the first Men who just found out what fire is.
Or back then with the first bench wise I was like "What type of uncultivated Savage have I've been all these years without one!"
One of My own Project life goals is a big Warehouse or Hanger on My own property.
Big enough for all the fun and of course added and splitted of to one side, a place were all the finsihed projects are parked.
Oh man...
Eh, gotta start somewhere, like with the project cars themselfs.
One day You stand there and be like "Wait, that's it? It's done? Besides maitnence of course. Damn. Great! Time to get another one but this is now the realiable dream daily!"
roadwarrior721@reddit
I started this and then one of those thread sizer kits. Very good decision
meltman@reddit
I need that.
