“Trash valet” service for elderly?
Posted by One-Proposal-4250@reddit | plano | View on Reddit | 12 comments
My elderly parents live in Plano and I noticed while visiting how cumbersome and dangerous it is for my 90 year-old father to roll the trash cans down his fairly steep driveway for trash pick up. I am wondering if there are curbside pick up services or “trash valet”services in Plano?

I'm not sure about Plano, but call and ask the city's solid waste department. I know of another local city that keeps a list and they will pick up trash carts up by the house for those elderly or disabled in need. It's called porch pick up".

Sounds like a good thing to ask their neighbors. ‘Hey my Dad needs help getting the trash can in place, if I Venmo you $5 a week can you do his when you do yours?’ Odds are they’ll just offer to do it for free, maybe you miss a week if they’re on vacation or whatever but doubt your parents trash is overflowing every week at 90.

I wish for the day my elderly neighbors ask me this. I would be honored to do it for free

I was going to suggest this as well. I do this for my elder neighbor lady in exchange for allowing me to put my single, small weekly plastic grocery bag of biomass/organic waste in her bin so I then don't have to roll mine down and back. WIn-Win!

The city will do it for you if you make an ADA request. You can do it i line or call. More info here https://www.plano.gov/395/Accessibility-Accommodations

What are the cross streets? If it’s close, I can help. Free

Nearly all trash companies have a service for the elderly and disabled that requires a doctor's note but will allow the homeowner to put their cans closer to the house.
They don't advertise it much, but call the city.

Was going to suggest this too. Call 311

What neighborhood? If they are close, I don’t mind helping.

In Lucas, CWD offers that as part of the service for an additional fee. Might want to check with the trash hauler.
I used to get FB ads a lot for a trash valet service. Seemed grossly overpriced though. It was as much as my pickup fee.
My wife and I regularly retrieve the bins for one of our neighbors. So ask around might be able to find a neighborhood kid looking for some easy cash.

It not much smaller, but if they don’t fill their trash can every week, Plano allows you to swap the full size trash can for one a little smaller. It saves you a few dollars a month and is a bit more manageable in size. It may be worth downsizing even if you also find someone to help move the cans.
Unfortunately, theres not a smaller recycling can, so it doesn’t help there.
