Where in America should I go on my internship?

My Masters degree program has the opportunity to potentially work in the US for a certain period of time. I want to hear from you which states and areas you think would be the best to live in and why. I am very familiar of US politics so i understand the federal system, but not so much the tax systems and laws regarding property and generic personal finance. Plus I want the year or however long away to be the opportunity not only to further my skills but explore that specific state in my free time.

Your question is huge, lol. You might start with what kind of climate you want to live in. As far as taxes, they are going to be a little different depending on what state you live in.

Yeah I know it is. I am trying to understand about the economic factors about each state since it’s so complicated. I didn’t realise there was a fixed federal tax but I realise it makes sense lol

Some states don't have income taxes. However, they often tax everything you buy, and some states have toll roads. So I don't know exactly what to tell you about that. I live in Minnesota. It is nice here. Some people don't like how cold our winters get.

Lots of things to consider IMO. In no particular order I will make maybe some obvious things: Weather Big City vs Rural Taxes How Far the Dollar Goes Your need to speak your native language. Obviously and not surprisingly it will probably be said mentioned about warmer states but maybe you don't care. Red versus blue states which I just suggest to avoid any and all political conversations. Maybe if you tell me those. I can help better? I lived in eight states and visited a majority of them....

I lived in NY, IN, KS, IL, AZ, TX, NV, and OH. I am into the Southwest so Arizona and Nevada. No taxes in Nevada and low taxes in Arizona. Very clean and newer states, cities but of course they have some rough areas. If you can handle four months of hell the rest of the year the weather is perfect. Not very walkable so you would need a car or live near where you work. Texas is humid and each major city has its own charm. Low taxes and friendly people in my experience. My favorite place to travel would be San Diego. We went there often and you get the beach but the cost of the living and taxes are ridiculous. The weather is great and the atmosphere is very lively but also has some quiet pockets. Florida has low taxes but also humid like Texas. It would be my second favorite for warmer climates but this would be after he desert and dry heat states. I was North of NYC but my cousins live there now. I was there in the 80's and it was a scary place. Well the city....Four Seasons. The Midwest also have four seasons. Balanced cost of living and taxes. Chicago is a great city in the nicer areas but in the heart of the city, it's not cheap but better than LA and NYC. I can't comment on the Pacific NorthWest, NorthWest, a lot of the South and New England. Each area has its charm. If you have the ability to transfer...I would suggest a mid sized city that has all ot the wanted American sports that can be interesting or of no interest. My background was real estate so balancing your wants and being realistic is important. Not sure where you are from but maybe finding your community in some of the cities can make you feel at home. When I have moved or traveled abroad I try to network with other English speakers.

There are a couple of questions I would ask you first. The first of which is- will you have a car? This is important since public transportation in the US is nowhere near the quality seen in Europe. What kind of things do you enjoy doing and what type of climate are you looking for?

Probably won’t have a car. Love watching US sports (so I have a preference of going to where my teams are located). Love exploring places and doing touristy stuff.
