This is a narrow erg (ridge of sand dunes) in a nature reserve in central Saudi Arabia. It’s greener than usual because of some unusual late spring rains. Lots of pastures and meadows and a few seasonal lakes that attract cranes and flamingos and other migratory birds.
Plan was to cross the wide northern section from the flamingo lake to the “turquoise” salt lake on the other side, then head north to the Qatan mountain reserve by an offroad shortcut. Made the crossing but a nasty sandstorm forced me to abandon part 2 at the salt lake.
Tried initially to cross the high sand ridges but was trickier than expected and temp was approaching 40 so managed to find a less treacherous route. Still enough obstacles and steep drops.
