What kind of songs or background audio do you listen to while coding or solving problems?
Posted by Majestic-Taro-6903@reddit | ExperiencedDevs | View on Reddit | 81 comments
Do you prefer listening to music while coding or solving difficult problems, or do you like a calm and peaceful environment with no distractions?
If you listen to music, what kind works best for you — lo-fi, classical, movie OSTs, EDM, white noise, rain sounds, metal, podcasts, or something else?
I’ve noticed some people focus better with energetic music, while others need complete silence to think clearly.

Video game sound tracks. They are specifically designed to get you focused and keep cruising in a game and it works for desk work as well.
This is the only one I use

My personal go-to is the soundtrack from ftl
bluetista1988@reddit
30-min extended version of Undertale's Another Medium: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAwBD8dfFps
Listen to it at 1.25x speed. It gets me in the zone every time.
craig_241@reddit
This is my absolute favourite playlist for game sound tracks to listen to while working: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1Uj0cNo6vn09YSwrqYxjrCh9mlBFcGKi

This is really good too! I can see this working. I tried it a little, I'm thinking I liking MY link a little better haha , (little jab there for fun) but because it is like 2-5 minute game songs from so many different games and some have highs and some have lows which lets you ride it and you literally feel like your cruising while at work. The pure RPG theme songs tend to mellow me out a little too much
But I know a perfect time I am going to use that playlist, thank you!
damnworldcitizen@reddit
Try this, it might be something new it sounds like game tracks but it isn't :) https://youtu.be/O4OB2-U8Pdg

interesting!

I bounce around, usually more house/trance, but I've got some emo/metal playlists I mix in now and then, on Spotify I usually just put the setting to mix in additional songs so I don't run out and hear repeats.
Main electronic (more progressive house I'd say?) playlist (4.5 hours)- https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5mbtqw29AupSvtILgWAGvn?si=l7o7VvBzR6KTXWNNp00WQA&pi=l77sefLQQPOhu
Synthpop? (1.5 hours) - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7oOX24rFeCleFfDV0sa7I8?si=f07HEIj9T_O9ik8uZTF8AA&pi=a7HdpLuuTMewg
More of a funky electronic don't even know the genre (1.5 hours) - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0B7ILJ4S7o7U8wTJk39Njf?si=zRDkMIuoQJ2qm5i1QgRHvA&pi=LYi0_vzoT-S-n
Emo/pop punk (8.5 hours) - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0pxNpah3GeI8kvpAD8uzTU?si=kkP3Zw08QRWamWC8dwomHQ&pi=_PyOekHySj2hZ
Nu metal (mostly 2000-2010s music, 11 hours) - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2LY90ZEjMqKaJUWrNK90M7?si=3_qdRIdxS2mBrIS1dTmADQ&pi=9Nt0kZTmRsiu1
Almost certainly ai generated but I made a YouTube playlist of some of this accounts dnb sets which have been a nice change lately (prob 10+ hours)- https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcnaqhqRvoOnOr-_0OWKshq4cSLml02Fl&si=ROpsaa_RRJKsBtsj

These lists are all soo good. The emo/pop punk and numeral playlists really took me back to my early teens. Thank you.
Buff_Lightyear@reddit
Haha glad you enjoy it, I haven't kept up with the metal scene so there isn't much recent, but I still enjoy listening to them, was a big part of highschool/college for me
hangerofmonkeys@reddit
Wtf, why was the post deleted 😭
Buff_Lightyear@reddit
Feel like every subreddit has the same issue, lots of shitty posts get to stay up, but a post about sharing music on a Friday does not meet the "rigorous standards of this subreddit!!!"

I need complete silence
ACoderGirl@reddit
I like music sometimes, but yeah, silence honestly is best for me. I've had so many times where I actually started with music, paused the music for some reason or another, then had a really productive few hours where I suddenly go "huh, I forgot to listen to music".
The challenge is that the type of music I'd prefer to listen to are my favourite regular songs, but if I know the lyrics at all, it's distracting because I'll sing along in my head (no matter how hard I try not to). Stuff like EDM or classical music are less distracting, but also just less appealing to me.
I find that music can sometimes be helpful for boring work, but it's more distracting for the actual complicated, more novel work where I need to really think about what I'm doing.
foldedlikeaasiansir@reddit
Yeah the fact that people listen to music or podcasts is wild to me
BigDickedAngel@reddit
Depends on what im working on...heavy thinking - total silence; light thinking - background tv noise
itgforlife@reddit
Same. I would find music, podcasts, etc. To be too distracting.
virgoerns@reddit
Yeah, music always wins (over anything TBH). If there's a beat, if there's a rhythm, I start moving: tapping, humming, shaking, dancing.
That said, sometimes I can work with Brian Eno's "Music for Airports" in the background. It was specifically composed to be interesting, but ignorable. Probably the same for the whole ambient genre, but Eno is ambient precursor.

Hard techno/trance only, preferably Dutch from 90s
IgnorantPlatypus@reddit
Death metal and metalcore mostly. The same thing I listen to during my morning workout.
I used to listen to EDM but my musical interests shifted.
You do you -- there's no right answer. Some people hate music with lyrics while they're trying to think. Some people dislike slow music, or fast, or whatever.
RayBuc9882@reddit
On weekdays, if I am listening to any music, it can be anything, from pop, old rock, to old Bollywood.
If working in the evenings and/or the weekends, I need the Blues music!

Man, AI music has flooded YouTube and Spotify. Honestly, for background coding purposes, I don't think I really care.
OrangeBagOffNuts@reddit
Now that you said I went to check - the first one has comments mentioning is human made music the other one zero, could be AI - I'm wondering now if it is - yeah for productivity I don't mind but what's scary is no knowing if it is or not
Morel_@reddit
loud, rhythmic - edm, trance, techno

The classic oakenfold mixes are peak. Tranceport, Voyage into Trance, Goa Mix Silver. Pure coding fuel

Halo Soundtrack?
chikamakaleyley@reddit
If i need to lock in:
Andrew WK - I Get Wet (debut album)
Otherwise i generally have a bunch of tech youtubers streaming in the background, which i just barely try to follow - every now and then i'll hear something interesting and i'll kinda look into it
sorta helps me stay semi up to date with whats going on in the tech world, or just learn about something new that sounded interesting
creaturefeature16@reddit
Putting on the soundtrack to my late 20 party years, while coding, is a hilarious visual. I'm gonna need to try this.
Plastic_Scale3966@reddit
idk mann , currently listening to nu ma nu ma nu ma yay (dragostea din tei) . it gets the job done

If you have ADHD, energetic music is terrible choice.
Windyvale@reddit
I have ADHD and I can assure you the answer is “It depends.”
InfectedShadow@reddit
I have ADHD and energetic music helps me focus.
Exirel@reddit
Not all ADHD my friend. Not every time either. Sometimes It's the only thing that help me go, other time I'll need something completely different. I need to be very mindful of my level of stimulation, and it's not a "always or never" and more "what fits the best in the moment?" for my case.
Wrong-Garlic9087@reddit
Switching between doom metal and idm/breakcore, having a wall of sound works well. On the opposite end brown noise rules, kinda amplifies the noise cancelling of the headphones.
arypti@reddit
Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers theme song on repeat (either version)

SimpleMetricTon@reddit
I like music but no lyrics. Beat can be lively but must be consistent.
valadil@reddit
It varies on a daily basis. Some days my mind really wants to wander and I need something new for it to lock onto. Some days I need something familiar and cozy. Some days I wanna lift up my energy. Some days I need to tamp my energy levels down so I stay at my desk. Finding my daily music need is a puzzle. Some days I don’t solve the puzzle and hope nobody catches on.
grumblefap@reddit
Trance, vocal trance, drum&bass, phonkwave is my current favorite.
13--12@reddit
Lo fi house
Grenaten@reddit
I like post rock, post metal, anything with steady heavy guitars and no vocals. Hearing a human voice is messing up with my thinking.
Flashy-Whereas-3234@reddit
Now we have AI, I shorten my lifespan by listening to tension music, like Bad Blood by Rok Nardin.
If I'm in the zone, then something like Tool - Jambi, or Infected Mushroom - Project 100.
Hyperdrive-Robot@reddit
Brown Noise + Noise Cancelling headphones if I have to really concentrate. It filters out the distracting sounds from an open office, and IMO it’s not as harsh as white noise. Video game soundtracks, and or electronic music if I don’t have to think as much.

Rock/metal when I’m in a super energized state or have a big deadline soon. Medieval/fantasy/videogame music most of the time, psychedelic rock sometimes when I’m also sorta just chilling!

rahul91105@reddit
Classical instrumental or complete silence/ white noise. Nothing with words/lyrics.
crow_thib@reddit
My music tastes are pretty eclectic, and it's the same when I'm coding. When solving very complex problems, I sometimes prefer to not even listen to music, except if I'm in a noisy environment.
The only thing that changes from my usual playlists when I'm coding, is I try not to listen to tracks with vocals in a language I understand, as it can make me loose focus. Either instrumentals or languages I don't speak.
Salty-Wrap-1741@reddit
I need ambient. Can't focus otherwise. This cyber punk ambient is perfect:
