topazchip@reddit
Makes haul-outs a hell of a lot easier.

Most expensive houseboat possible

Let me introduce you to the Landseaire.

Great video, thanks.

I guess this is a 70+ year old relic of a boat from Australia bought from the RAAF as surplus. Allegedly there are photos around of more of them, a Google image search can point you towards them.
Now what caught my eye was a whole damned Dornier that met the same fate, also down in Australia.
EarlyMB@reddit
That might have been an ex-Dutch one?
Starchaser_WoF@reddit
Why would you do this to a Catalina?
Bergwookie@reddit
Someone involved in the scrapping or knowing the scrapper said "well, that would do a nice hulk, let's get rid of the flying stuff and put a cab on top, the landing gear is practical for taking her out once in a while, let's keep it"
OperationMobocracy@reddit
These conversions probably use stripped, not-airworthy airframes sold as salvage. Not low hour airworthy versions.
TigerIll6480@reddit
Post-WW2, plenty of brand new airframes of various types were flown straight to recycling depots.
BestMillimeter18@reddit
Not sure of the validity of the claim, but supposedly the reason the original Land Rover was aluminum was due to the low price of aluminum from all the scrapped airframe that were getting recycled.
LordRavensbane@reddit
Probably was done after the war when these were being scrapped and sold off for cheap, or done in another country where this was cheaper than buying a boat

It’s kind of brilliant, beautiful lines and a boat that size that doesn’t need a trailer? Not bad
ash_274@reddit
Need to come up with a means of propulsion, though. It went from a deep-draft airboat to an amphibious barge.

Vibe drive
P1xelHunter78@reddit
The fun of a PBY without all of the “…wait, how much is that going to cost?!” And the “yeah, I’d like to order six cases of oil today, I’m stocking up for the weekend”
ash_274@reddit
And you’re not going to have the shoulders of an NFL linebacker just to keep the wings level (worse on the early non-amphibious models)
OldWrangler9033@reddit
I guess it's better than being scraped....
LefsaMadMuppet@reddit
There is a possible chance that the Catalina will be built again. https://catalinaaircrafttrust.com/ngaa-home
OldWrangler9033@reddit
Hope it works out, but I'll believe it when they start flying prototypes.
LefsaMadMuppet@reddit
Yeah, me too. At least this route gets to skip a lot of regulatory paperwork since it is a modification of a permitted design.

Look what they did to my boy.

The story behind this would be interesting.

"I used to fly through the air like a beautiful bird!" "Sure grandpa, time for your meds"
