How do the units connect?
ken_the_boxer@reddit
By very hard to get dedicated expansion cards and a cable.

Both have been reverse engineered and open sourced: https://github.com/schlae/ibm-extender (same guy who reverse engineered the sound blaster).

Hey thanks, that is good news. I have a few spare cases.

And the 'expansion card' was not much more than putting the ISA signals on a 37-pin cable. The board in the expansion chassis is only a passive backplane.
More or less ATA before they knew they needed it.

Nice explanation, thanks!!

OP, for me this looks like two complete systems !
It seems that someone "upgraded" the expansion box with a fully working mainboard - there is a keyboard connector and also memory chips on that mainboard.
Doesn't look like a passive backplane.

Awesome! And IBM Proprinter!

I've repaired tons of these XP

Kind of weird they are not quite the same width!
Stoney3K@reddit
They are, they're just stacked crooked. The cases are completely identical.

Makes sense. Really looks like they are different though. Deceptive angle I guess.

That's a lot of fresh air in that expansion box. I was not aware that an expansion box existed. Thanks for posting.
