G36 in US law enforcement

Does anyone know why some (not many) US law enforcement agencies went with G36s. The federal 1033 program basically handed out M4s to LEA's in the 2000s. Does anyone have any idea why a select number of law enforcement agencies went with G36s besides it being a cool gun.
There was also a police cam recording the other day and the patrol rifle was a G36C with RMR

Bro is so corny lmao.
bmbreath@reddit
What?
BallisticRicehat666@reddit
I know a lot of police departments run super old MP5’s, a few even run MP7’s, might just be that they wanted to source their new rifles from the same place they’re already sourcing their SMG’s and the budget allowed for it.

I have no idea about HK pricing for mil/LEO but it has to be expensive right? What treasurer sees the option of basically free M4s vs 2400$ HK G36s. Maybe im thinking to much into this. Is it really as simple as brand loyalty lol.
lexforseti@reddit
HK isn‘t that expensive if you are a state. I know that the price of a G36 for Military Customers is around 800€
No-Resource9879@reddit (OP)
Damn
PassivelyInvisible@reddit
HK really does hate the civvies and poors
RowdyRusty420@reddit
At the end of the year if you got $ left over, you better spend it cause if not you are getting less money next fiscal year. Thats how you wind up with depts, especially federal buying expensive guns or getting high trim patrol vehicles.
Historical-Count-374@reddit
Its cheaper for them due to previous business contracts.
A new set of cheaper rifles or a used set of high end rifles may both be out if budget range, where as specific manufacturers/importers will have previous agreements putting thier proprietary atfroms in the spotlight at a reduced rate with an already set ecosystem of parts, maintenance, and ease of training.
BallisticRicehat666@reddit
I think it is just brand loyalty, as a lot of departments that don’t run HK recently ended up buying a shit load of sig rifles and SMGs which would fetch about the same price. So I think certain departments already having HK stuff just made them get more of it when the time came.

Cool. G36 is one of those guns that im fond of. When I was 12 or so my friend spend 400$ on a near replica airsoft G36C and I have been a fan of the real thing since.
williamsdj01@reddit
I played a lot of Rainbow Six: Vegas as a teen so the G36 always has a place in my heart
loogie97@reddit
Once you learn hk slap, it is hard to forget.
EmergencyAnimator326@reddit
Fo Military/Leo g36 cost about 1100
StevenMcStevensen@reddit
The video where one of them clearly doesn’t have a mag in his G36, but never notices it the entire time?
PsychoTexan@reddit
I’m glad we all saw the same video.
I don’t know about you but my first thought was it was some kind of super limited capacity mag till I saw the others and got a good look at it.
No-Resource9879@reddit (OP)
with the RMR? Yeah think so
E4g6d4bg7@reddit
Are those mags easy to swap? Kind of looks like they would get in the way of each other.
Jellyswim_@reddit
Its a total gimmick. Makes the gun super heavy and unwieldy.
donnie_rulez@reddit
Also its a G36, so by the time you've dumped all 90 rounds your gun has melted 🫤
TurboEncabulator_1@reddit
A video of a G36 being mag dumped with 100 round drums until it caught fire. It was extinguished in the snow and then fired again.

I've seen it. The translations in the comments are a nice touch!

I love this video and how nonchalant the shooter is.
Frankyvander@reddit
I like the guy without ear protection just his fingers in his ears.
I imagine his insurance is gonna say it wasn’t a service related injury. He’ll say WAS?

Unicorn187@reddit
It was the Xm8 that was melting in US Army trials. The G36 was just losing accuracy in testing by the German military.
HYPERNOVA3_@reddit
And even the accuracy loss was deemed as bs by H&K. That info came from soldiers who got in intense firefights and blamed the gun for their poor accuracy, when it was just the stress of the situation getting to them. At least that's what the German courts said, and so far, only the Germans complained about this, not the Spanish, the Lithuanians or any other major G36 user

WearIcy2635@reddit
Taping two together is very practical and has been used in combat across the world since WW2. Taping three is ridiculous especially for a cop
DookieShoez@reddit
These don’t require tape, that’s what the little nubs on the side of them is for. They connect on their own.
bobbobersin@reddit
I can see it being super handy as a patrol rifle you keep in the trunk of your squad car
maxgaap@reddit
But the cool factor makes up for it /s
Jeremyvmd09@reddit
I don’t run them like that on a g36 but I do on one of my ars that’s setup for home defense it’s nice to be able to grab and go and have a spare mag when I don’t have a carrier (I’m in nj so 10 round limit). If I had access to full capacity I wouldn’t do it cuz it is a bit bulkier with it but quick and easy to swap.
fendtrian@reddit
Super Easy to Swap, you can even do AK Style Reloads with it, since a Triple mag Pack is pretty bulky but it weighs less than a loaded Stanag together. About 4 Empty G36 Mags are the Weight of a Single Loaded Stanag.
And you got 90 rounds on the gun. It only limited by what you are willing to wield. And 90 is OK. I wouldn't recommend more then 4 mags fixed to each other.
The guy in the Picture has it like this because he carrys the Minimum Amount of ammo you should have to stop an Intruder but dont Require additional Pockets. It just looks nicer to have Guy in a plain Uniform That wields a gun then a Full Tactical Kit guy standing Around With his Gun. The Perceived Threat Level is just a lot lower.
I wouldnt go as far and say "iTs A ToTaL gImMiCK" just because i dont understand the Use case which is based on: Real Life Combat Experience of the 80s and 90s.
The Swiss use the Same system on the SIG 550 Series.
Especially on the 552 its perfect for CQB. Both G36 and Sig 550 are available with Stanag Mags as well.
The Sig requires a complete Lower while the G36 has a removable Mag well assembly.
So this Setup in the Picture was a deliberate Choice: a Beta C would still be heavier probably while having 10 Rounds more. Not really worth it, sticks out on both sides about double of what it is now.
reapertwo-6@reddit
I carried a very similar set up for a time, in a very similar type of scenario (uniformed protection detail). I quite enjoyed the magazine system overall, although I only manipulated the system at a flat range.
Frankyvander@reddit
They have spacers on the hook things so you have a gap between them but it is probably tighter than the old fashioned tape a mag upside down trick
SnooOpinions6959@reddit
Afaik you are supposed to do that with those mags as well
WalkerTR-17@reddit
A one point the AR was not super available compared to other options, late 90’s early 2K’s. Theres also a thing in police procurement where companies will basically give away guns to a small department in an area, so they can tell large agencies in their area their presumedly positive experience and drive sales. This is why you’ll sometimes see super broke super small agencies with really weird guns.
Artystrong1@reddit
I would hate carrying this around. Dual mag plus the optics would be annoying AF
GenericUsername817@reddit
Triple mags
No-Resource9879@reddit (OP)
I think he's doing the mag setup bc he has no mag carrier
Newftube@reddit
US (and Canadian) police services that had G36s had them mostly because they were unable to get M4 carbines. Production at Colt's was taken up primarily by US DOD contracts and they had no spare production capacity left.
No-Resource9879@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the info. I know they were given out m16a2 and M4s just didn't know the years.
LongWalksAtSunrise@reddit
I read that Capitol police had to demil their G36 over some made in america uproar by members of congress so they didn’t have them for long. They’re all rocking the 16” semi ARs up to 2020. Dunno what they have now tho
OGlazypenguin@reddit
I need those KAC buis/rail
No-Resource9879@reddit (OP)
First you need a G36
leto78@reddit
I have seen some recent videos of people building a G36 from parts kits with US made receivers.
bobbobersin@reddit
Prosbably a shot in the dark but the Lego studded mags would be great for something you can put in the trunk of a police car, both as a patrol rifle but also say you have a swat officer doing a normal beat and suddenly there’s an active shooting or terror attack, it’s not like a hostage situation where your able to stage and prep, you can just grab it and go without having to like prep an entire kit
