Grocery store music

Siouxsie and the Banshees. Ok, that sad enough, but it was Red Light. Not one “everybody” knows. I had to stop and tilt my good ear up and then I was upset.
What’s next?
Plastic-Sentence9429@reddit
I'm a manager in a grocery store. I choose the music.
HeyMissMurderMittens@reddit (OP)
Out there doing the lords work!
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Thank you for your service!
JimC29@reddit
Exactly. Are generation is finally in charge of the music selection. This is great.
this_kitty68@reddit
I don’t normally shop at WF, but I recently relocated and it’s the only place that carries an item I use. A month or so ago the Sister of Mercy were playing. Yesterday Souixsie. My guess is someone who listened to what I called “death rock” back in the 80s is now curating for whatever service the grocery stores use these days. I don’t mind, but it’s very hard to not start dancing in the produce section…
a42N8Man@reddit
What Sisters? Like some poppy ditty off Vision Thing or older like Anaconda or Alice?
this_kitty68@reddit
Would you believe Dominion / Mother Russia???
a42N8Man@reddit
Yeah I can buy that… Floodland had moderate commercial success here in the states and I think hit the top 10 in the UK, and This Corrosion did exceptionally well overall.
I still get goosebumps hearing the opening with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir; takes me right back to hearing it for the first time at City Club
this_kitty68@reddit
Same. It gets me every time. Totally stopped me in my tracks at Whole Foods. I thought is that what I think it is…?
kb_colas@reddit
I've heard the smiths ❤️❤️❤️
ServoWHU42@reddit
I almost fell over when I heard Cocteau Twins at Sheetz the other day
glurbleblurble@reddit
I can’t relate, mine only plays this weird rotation of country, Hall and Oates, and Patti LaBelle.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
oooffff. I would find another store if you can.
glurbleblurble@reddit
If I had a dime for every time I walked out of there with “Maneater” stuck in my head …
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Maybe that is a sign from the store manager. They are a maneater looking for some fresh meat.
glurbleblurble@reddit
What do you think’s IN THE BURGERS?!?
pupper71@reddit
I swear the person making our Playlist has a sense of humor-- during a recent Sunday shift I heard "my own personal Jesus" and "losing my religion"
BMisterGenX@reddit
I'm waiting for the day that they play They Might Be Giants in the grocery store
pupper71@reddit
I've heard birdhouse in your soul! But I work there, and it was at 3am and the overnight playlist is not the same as the daytime.
Btw a couple years ago they stopped playing Christmas music overnight, much to the relief of all stock crews. Christmas music season is hard rock season nowadays.
a42N8Man@reddit
We heard Birdhouse In Your Soul at the local mall last month sooooo yeah
johninfla52@reddit
Nightshift
WhereItsAt75@reddit
When my kids (15, 20) are with me at the store, they recognize some of the songs before I do. They are familiar with a lot of 80's and 90's music.
Kestrel_Iolani@reddit
I heard Motley Crue 's Shout at the Devil on a Sunday morning at my local grocery store. Followed immediately by the Thompson Twins Hold Me Now. I wanted to sue for whiplash.
2PlasticLobsters@reddit
Hey, better that than be subjected to current pop crap. Click click thump thump, click click thump thump, click click thump thump...
wordstogetherrandom@reddit
I remember my mom humming along to "Girl from Ipanema" in grocery stores as a kid and rolling my eyes. I am not sure I like getting older....
frozen_charlotte@reddit
I heard “The Passion of Lovers” once while grocery shopping. 😭🖤
a42N8Man@reddit
I wanna shop where you shop
Ok-Yak3147@reddit
I hear Peter Murphy Cuts You Up about once a week in the grocery store
this_kitty68@reddit
Awesome! Which store????
Ok-Yak3147@reddit
Fry's in Arizona
Organic_Mix2282@reddit
When you were younger you would have known this was coming, I listened to the grandparents favorites, my parents favorites, now we're the old ones.
Emotional-Ocelot-309@reddit
I heard So. Central Rain in the grocery store a few weeks ago and it legit stopped me in my tracks.
actuallyno60@reddit
I used to work in a retirement home. The jukebox was full of Sinatra and Dean Martin. We used to joke how pretty soon it would have Led Zeppelin, and a few years later Depeche Mode, then Britney, etc.
Automatic-Nature6025@reddit
My local "Food City" in a tiny little Appalachian town has played Pixies, Primus, Dinosaur Jr., "The Chronic" era Dr.Dre, Mazzy Star, Fatboy Slim, Prodigy, Old Rancid, too many to list, but one day the teen cashier was saying about how boring it gets there sometimes, and I said "well at least they play good music for y'all" with a goofy smile , I'm sure, and she just shook her head like I had said that black liquorice was a good pizza topping. My head was shaking for the rest of the day.
Unsung_Ironhead@reddit
A less well known song, I heard Brad - The Day Brings in a grocery store a few years back, and went from “damn I can’t believe this is getting played in a grocery store” to “well it wasn’t a huge song anyway, so hopefully they’re getting royalties from it. “
If you don’t know who Brad was, they were Stone Goddard from Pearl Jam, Shawn Smith from Satchel, Reagan Hagar who was in a band Malfunkhun with Andy Wood before Mother Love Bone and Jeremy Toback. RIP to Shawn Smith who was an amazing vocalist and songwriter. Fun Fact - the song Battle Flag by Low Fidelity All Stars samples his vocals.

I worked in grocery stores and malls in the late 80s and early 90s when 70s era soft rock dominated the soundscape of such places. I’m sure our parents and grandparents felt much the same when walking through those places.
I can’t ever listen to Aja again because Peg was a constant in every mall rotation I ever worked in.
SnowblindAlbino@reddit
That's interesting-- I worked in malls during that same era and they all had literal "Muzak" service, so no actual songs. It was 100% instrumental versions of 1950s hits, occasionally something from the 60s. Just insipid, garbage music. I would have loved to hear Aja instead of some 101-strings arrangement of an Englebert Humperdink song.
SnowblindAlbino@reddit
I've heard the Dead, the Allmans, and even the Outlaws in the local grocery lately. Like someone has put on a jam band channel. I love it, but am not sure what the 70-80+ customers are thinking during the day.
FFE67@reddit
Hannaford near me plays ELO, Styx and Queen regularly
Necessary_Giraffe_66@reddit
I’ve heard STP and Beck and Soundgarden at Kroger before.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
My wife is constantly getting jiggy with it with the grocery store music. It is fun watching her dance and sing along while picking out just the right pickles.
wisemonkey101@reddit
I do that at Sprouts. They have an RnB edge I enjoy listening to when I’m buying produce.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Oh she would really be into that. To bad we don't have a Sprouts around us.
Weird-Ninja8827@reddit
I thought I was the only one.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
No, you are not alone. Hell I went into the store one night with my wife and her friends. I was DDing. they were all in there dancing around. It is like an old person night club up in the grocery stores.
tireworld@reddit
I heard Ministry - Work For Love, INXS - Don't Change, DM - Policy of Truth while shopping a few weeks ago.
this_kitty68@reddit
Ministry???? Whoa…
Bl8kStrr@reddit
I have a Rouses Grocery Store that plays Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, Nirvana and the list of goes on, what makes it even more enjoyable is that they have speakers outside in the front of the building so when I park and am going to the gym I always hear a good one playing
this_kitty68@reddit
thisgirlnamedbree@reddit
Turn Me Loose by Loverboy at Walmart (yeah, I know). I wasn't sad, I was jamming out while shopping.
this_kitty68@reddit
OMG. I love that song. lol
sleepypossumster@reddit
What I like about Walmart's in-store music is that it's like a real Walmart radio station. I mean, there's sort of like a DJ and they do shout outs to store #538 or whatever. This doesn't make me love Walmart, but it's kinda cool...
MistressPaine666@reddit
Brass Monkey had me dancing in the cereal aisle the other day.
Solid_Association_49@reddit
You had no choice but to dance to that funky monkey
MaximumJones@reddit
I thought it was in slightly poor taste to hear Snap Your Fingers Snap Your Neck by Prong in the Physical Therapist's office though. 😳
ZommyFruit@reddit
Next is hearing King Missile in CVS
MrsRalphieWiggum@reddit
Maybe the instrumental version.
Barbarossa7070@reddit
Sucksie Sucks!
LuceLeakey@reddit
There was a day almost 15 years ago when I was walking through a King Soopers and heard a Depeche Mode song. I don't remember which one it was but it was the day I realized I was old.
StillC5sdad@reddit
Look at the fancy one with a good ear.. stop bragging
Ok-Yak3147@reddit
I heard The Cramps in Goodwill one day
Reasonable-HB678@reddit
Being in a Walmart in 2021 and hearing "Physical" by Olivia Newton John was transformative. Going back to being the six year old who didn't have a clue what that song was about, and equally puzzled about the music video.
jayshoeman@reddit
I used to manage a shoe store for a National chain (we had a music service). One day, one time. “I got 5 on it” by Luniz
abbagodz@reddit
After working four years in a grocery store, I finally heard an ABBA song!
Inkdman73@reddit
Hearing Cocteau Twins in the drugstore
-NachoBorracho-@reddit
😮
JimC29@reddit
Why would this upset you. It's fucking awesome. GenX has taken over the music selection.
DantesGame@reddit
This, right? My local grocer has some really kick ass tunes.
samuellbroncowitz@reddit
I've heard songs by Megadeth and Slayer at a local sourdough & Co. It was weird to hear them along with 80s pop like Tiffany there.
ranchoparksteve@reddit
I always figure that some GenX slacker has finally become Vice President of Tunes and is now in charge of the play list.
catnapspirit@reddit
Just wait til they move past us and start getting to crap like the Spin Doctors.. as muzak. .
High-since-1993@reddit
Our demographic is being catered to.
Cultural-Pea-1516@reddit
The Jam's The Bitterest Pill (I Ever Had To Swallow) muzak version at the San Jose, CA airport.
inthecity206@reddit
🥺
Competitive_Pea_3478@reddit
I just heard late 80s/early 90s club music at my local grocery store. Can’t remember one of the songs but had heard it before; the other was Gonna Make You Sweat (Let the Music Take Control). 20 years ago the same grocery chain was playing Beach Boys and 60s music.
HilariousBosch@reddit
Why was the local pseudo Irish pub playing Diesel's "Sausalito Summer Night" a couple of weeks ago? I just stood there gobsmacked.
simonsaysgo13@reddit
They were playing Pink Floyd today! “And the worms ate into his brain…”. 😂
CitizenChatt@reddit
I gave up and just sing out loud while swaying to the beats while perusing the aisles 🤣
hocfutuis@reddit
The Smiths being busted out Bunnings (Australian hardware shop) got me
Beakman256@reddit
Bunnings mentioned!
Beakman256@reddit
Been hearing Steely Dan in Home Depot recently. No treally “obscure” but less common than something like Led Zep or the Stones.
