I felt really old today when the 20 something year old girls I was working with had no clue who Kevin Costner was

I was shocked. When I showed them the picture they thought it was cute, but still had no clue who he was.
RadlEonk@reddit
I wished I didn’t know who he was. He’s not very good, yet keeps working.

The HOT old guy on Yellowstone
MommaOfManyCats@reddit
I don't think there's a version of him that isn't hot. OK, maybe not in real life, but on film? Always hot 😆
FreddyNoodles@reddit
Nooooo? Serious? I have always thought he is like the blandest dude to have ever existed. The fact his name is fking KEVIN was just so fitting. He looks like a Kevin.
I avoided movies he was in because I found him so boring to look at and his voice has zero emotion in it. Like white noise. I’m a 47yo woman, I should be in his demographic fan base, yeah? No? Am I a bit young?
When he disappeared for years, I forgot instantly that he ever even existed. Then he had a divorce and he was all over and I was/still am thunderstruck by his wealth. I tried Yellowstone last year just to see if it was as good as some were saying. Disliked every character and plot line. 😕I made it through most of the first season in hopes it was a slow-burn and couldn’t bear it anymore.
I knew some people found him attractive but I had never actually heard someone say it. Seeing your comment has me floored. Lol. It’s like finding a plain white piece of paper to be just stunning art, imo.
Different strokes, right?
minicooperlove@reddit
I agree! I never thought he was that attractive and his voice is so monotone, I don’t get it.
dam_the_beavers@reddit
I feel like you haven’t seen The Untouchables.
InterestingTry5190@reddit
I cannot find him attractive after the horrifying recent rape scene he insisted on shooting without the consent of the actress. Wasn’t even in the script.
CardioTornado@reddit
What?! 😬
DarkenL1ght@reddit
We learned nothing from the Johnny Depp saga apparently. Let the case play out...
The Allegations (The Plaintiff's Side)
Devyn LaBella, who was the lead stunt double for actress Ella Hunt, claims that on May 2, 2023, Costner directed a scene that crossed several professional and legal boundaries:
The Defense (Costner's Side)
Costner has filed a legal declaration calling the lawsuit a "bold-faced lie" and a "salacious" attempt to damage his reputation. His defense highlights:
The Current Status (May 2026)
As of late 2025/early 2026, a judge has allowed the lawsuit to proceed, meaning there was enough initial evidence to avoid a dismissal. While Costner successfully had the "coercion" claims thrown out, the claims for hostile work environment and sexual harassment are still moving toward trial.
This isn't a case of a secret, non-consensual act captured on film, but a professional breakdown of on-set safety protocols. Whether it was an "unscripted assault" or a "misunderstood rehearsal" is what the courts are currently deciding.
lavasca@reddit
I neg to differ and hearby bequeth the with all my Costner viewing opportunities.

Yeah the girls I was working with had never seen Yellowstone, so that didn’t help
My_First_Knife1@reddit
Nice bot account!
ObscureLilac@reddit (OP)
Who are you calling a bot?
Oldpuzzlehead@reddit
Yeah. I am 44 and I do not know anyone younger than me that likes Yellowstone. I'm sure they are out there but for me it is just my mom and step dad; 1847 is great, 1923 was amazing, Yellowstone, Landman. CBS and Paramount know how to keep their audience.
Brilliant_Award2877@reddit
Im watching Yellowstone. Its terrible, but Im going to slog through for the prequels
Candid-Culture3956@reddit
A lot of people like Yellowstone. I know many people in their 20s and 30s who watched it.

I believe you, I just don't know any of them.

Young people are not forced to watch old stuff they way we did. There is no I love Lucy or Gilligan's Island equivalent playing on the tv when they get home from school.
ObscureLilac@reddit (OP)
Very true. We grew up with one tv. You make a good point
heresmytwopence@reddit
Kevin Costner is to today's twenty-somethings what Dick Van Dyke was to us.
ObscureLilac@reddit (OP)
Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Most of us millennials/genx grew up watching those movies and loved him! I’m thinking a lot of it has to do with kids today being on tablets and phones and not watching as many movies as we did growing up
singleguy79@reddit
You think that's something, one of my coworkers called one of my younger coworkers Richie Rich for some reason. He obviously didn't get the reference.

Overall-Scientist846@reddit
Not watching it is fine.
Surely they KNEW of the show. “One of the main characters in Yellowstone,” surely would be enough to ID him.

We had something that was from the Newman's Own brand recently. My 13 year old asked who Paul Newman was. I told him he was an actor that all the women thought was handsome. I said, "Kind of like an older Brad Pitt." My kid said, "Who is Brad Pitt?"
.....
MrTigerEyes@reddit
Paul Newman was Doc Hudson in the Cars movie.
CarmenxXxWaldo@reddit
What a strange way to describe Paul Newman though "all the women thought was handsome" and not "man who won multiple car races up through his 80s and sometimes acted".
HYThrowaway1980@reddit
This isn’t a generational thing, your 13 year old just isn’t very cineliterate. Pitt starred in one of the biggest movies of last year (F1) and has been consistently headlining films for thirty years at this point.
AcerAngle@reddit
And F1 was just okay. The way it was shot was really cool and well done but it's pretty much the same F1 that Stallone was in back in 2001.
I'm not shocked a teen doesn't know who Brad Pitt. I haven't been excited to see a movie for a long time.
TheJustBleedGod@reddit
Definitely know the feeling. Work with a lot of younger people and I dropped an Office Space reference and only got strange looks. That one hurt.

My 19 year old coworker was on his phone when suddenly Never Gonna Give You Up started to play. I said: "uh oh you got rickrolled!"
He didn't have a clue what rickrolling was. Not just Rick Astley and the original song, which was still played a lot when we were young, but the rickrolling meme. He never heard of it and I had to explain the entire thing to him. Wow I felt old.

I know tbe running gag is that he's stiff, but I recently rewatched Bull Durham for the first time in years and was struck by his performance. First, the movie ages incredibly well. I had no idea I would find it as funny and charming as I did. Tim Robbins is hilarious, and impressively willing to play the fool. Susan Sarandon is great (and also, only 41 in this film, which is surprising as she was always the "hot, old" actress - 41 ain't old lol.) Kevin Coster is remarkably handsome and winning - I can definitely see why all the moms were swooning in the 80s and 90s. Having said all that, there are only a few scenes where it doesn't sound like he is reading his lines for the first time off of cue cards. It's extraordinary that he had such a successful Hollywood career.

I was working a retail job on the weekends and was stationed at the front desk/register. One Saturday I was working with a 19/20 year old. She was a talker but whatever our shifts overlap for a couple hours. We’re talking music and she tells me how she’s into older music (her telling me nicely I’m old and trying to find common ground topic lol) and the song I remember her saying was Free Falling, in my head I’m thinking, Oh she really is into older music and before I can say his name, she says how much she loved John Mellencamp’s voice. I didn’t say anything and kept the conversation going.
Ok_Story_7924@reddit
I work with a lot of people in their 20s, I was still able to find common ground in my 30s. Then when I turned 40 it was like a switch flipped and I'm now this out of touch "old man" I thought I would never become.

Kevin Costner was huge between 1987 and 1996. But besides Yellowstone, he hasn't been in anything popular in 30 years.

Didn't see the History Channel miniseries you mentioned, but I'd still bank on it being shorter international total than Dances with Wolves.
NGL, though, watched it as a kid and still watch again if it's on.

Hatfields &McCoys was extremely popular. No where did I compare it with Dances with Wolves. What are you on about
MommaOfManyCats@reddit
Mr. Brooks deserved more attention than it go. Rumor Has It too. He was also Jonathon Kent, and you can't say the Superman movies weren't popular, even if he didn't have a huge part.
