How many people are on ZERO prescription meds?

I had a physical with the VA a few weeks ago. The NP who did it seemed shocked that I am not, nor ever have been on any long term prescription meds. I've had the occasional run if antibiotics or painkillers for their respective needs, but nothing long term.
Am I really some kind of exception? Is everyone else my age hooked on drugs?
Kiethblacklion@reddit
So far I am not on any long term prescriptions. I'm hoping to keep it that way for a while longer.
pawogub@reddit
No prescriptions, but take fiber gummies on doctor’s recommendation.
habitualtroller@reddit
I have found that mixing benefiber in my coffee working better than the gummy. Seems to work better for me and I avoid whatever stuff they put in the gummy. Just a thought but glad you are looking out for your colon either way.
pawogub@reddit
I had to get 12 inches of it cut out so trying now. Feeling much better now.
imogen1983@reddit
At 40, that was all I was taking. At 43, I take 4 prescription meds and probably a dozen supplements. At least I feel better than I did at 40.
YoureABoneMachine@reddit
Just one, hrt because I'm a menopausal lady who values her way of life. Not sure if that "counts"
imogen1983@reddit
Also on HRT, and I was just thinking the other day how much work I put into just trying to feel normal. I have to take the three times a day anxiety meds, the bi-weekly patch, and nightly progesterone so I can sleep… it’s working, but it’s a lot of work.
Cattle-egret@reddit
Just one, but it’s by choice.
trevourmeyer@reddit
Same here, but two.
Proof-Emergency-5441@reddit
3 but also same.
habitualtroller@reddit
My doctor has me on a vitamin D supplement, not sure if that counts as yes or no for your purposes. It’s over the counter and at 4000iu.
AristarchusJones@reddit
You have to actually go to the doctor to get prescribed meds, so no
SimplyTheApnea@reddit
Last time I went and got an actual physical I worked for Blockbuster.
ForgottenEpoch@reddit
I worked for Blockbuster in 2000. Haven't had a physical since...96?
Far-Ad-9798@reddit
There's still a Blockbuster open in Bend, Oregon, so we will assume it was that one and you quit last week......
Ok_Breakfast5425@reddit
Yep, only prescription meds I've had in a long while were hydros and some anti nausea meds if they fucked up my stomach when I shattered my leg a few years ago.
bashturd@reddit
I’m hooked on not feeling like complete shit everyday. Fuck you.
walter_grimsley@reddit
I was born with a rare heart defect which has to be monitored for life. I was on beta blockers for a long time but they did a cardioversion, and took me off the blockers.
Currently only on high blood pressure pills.
ironside_online@reddit
I wonder if there are differences depending on where you live?
Do people in the States get prescribed more medication than people in, say, France?
Mike__O@reddit (OP)
Yes. Americans are GROSSLY over-prescribed. There's a mentality of "don't leave the doctor empty handed", as well as believing there's a simple pill solution to fixing lifestyle-induced problems
Sufficient_Turn_9209@reddit
So you already knew you were a special snowflake when you made your flex post. 😆 I wish my solve it with diet and lifestyle stubborn mentality had not gotten in the way of finally deciding to try an ssri. I could have used that simple solution for a hereditary physiological problem ten years earlier.
olhado47@reddit
Everyone thinks everyone else is just like them. Everyone is also regularly wrong.
wait_ichangedmymind@reddit
The paradox is that everyone also thinks they’re the only ones like them.
“Am I the only one who…”
No. You are never “the only one who…”
Sufficient_Turn_9209@reddit
My parents are/were not on any daily meds. 84 when my dad passed and my mom is currently 86. THEY are unusual. Me? I'm "addicted" to an SSRI and they can take it from me when I die. I also take iron and monthly b12 injections cause apparently my body enjoys the benefits of healthy normal sized red blood cells with enough hemoglobin to carry oxygen.
viridiansoul@reddit
Neurologist has offered me different medications multiple times, but I just turn them down. I'm one of those lucky people who get all the side effects when I take a prescription. And I'm not going to do the prescription add on game either.
elonmusktheturd22@reddit
I'll take those pills when they put them into my cold dead hands!
Minute-Yogurt-2021@reddit
Well, was on anti-anxiety meds for few years, but I'm clean now.
Mike__O@reddit (OP)
TBH I'm as happy for you as I would be if you kicked illegal drugs
Minute-Yogurt-2021@reddit
? Last time I did drugs I was like 18.
No-Environment-3997@reddit
I think they just saw "clean now" and went with it, ignoring all earlier context apparently
Mike__O@reddit (OP)
No, I knew exactly what was being said. I think long-term prescription drugs are a major problem that people should actively try to avoid. Getting off of them via lifestyle changes is a major accomplishment
Minute-Yogurt-2021@reddit
Yeah, my bad, English as a second language.
WendyPortledge@reddit
One biologic for my multiple autoimmune conditions, and cannabis. Those are all I have for prescriptions!

"Hooked on drugs" implies some sort of negative connotation. My IUD releases progesterone and I have the estrogen patch for perimenopause. Are you saying I should just go through bone density loss, mood swings, weight gain despite working out daily, hair thinning, lethargy, etc to not be "hooked on drugs"?
Stabwank@reddit
Not seen a doctor since roughly 2008, never felt the need to go as "give it a few days and see if it gets better" seems to always do the trick, maybe if I had I would be on all kinds of pills and potions by now.
Hitthereset@reddit
Should be? Or actually are? Very different questions.
ChevalCher@reddit
Up until my soul cat died in 2020, I had never been on any medication other than an over-the-counter one for my allergies.
40 years free of pills, only to try a dozen or so antidepressants in the span of 6 years that did feck all the entire time I used them. My NP seems to think my AuDHD brain is just very resistant to SSRIs and SNRIs.
After my AuDHD diagnosis last month, my NP suggested I try Wellbutrin and Clonidine together as that particular combo has shown some promise in helping the ADHD part of me.
Been on both since February of this year. Don't really feel any different, but my NP did up the mg of Wellbutrin at my last appt, so I'll just have to play the wait-and-see approach for the millionth time. 😂
Ingonyama70@reddit
44M, I take Adderall, Wellbutrin, Rimorin, Sildenafil, and use an inhaler.
I think I ingest more drugs than food at this point.
daddywookie@reddit
It’s posts like these that make you realise how US centric this sub is. You guys like your meds, please sign here and give bank details here, here and here.
thisistherevolt@reddit
None for me, though I should probably be on an antidepressant.
Far-Ad-9798@reddit
Not sure if testosterone, vitamin b12, and an ADK10 vitamin count, but those i started taking a few months ago.
Moxie_Stardust@reddit
Listen to yourself. You think you're better than people that take drugs? You're not. See the responses, of people who aren't like you? Not needing drugs isn't an accomplishment, it's a privilege.
Many humans of our age depend on medications for reasons beyond their control, and even if it's not beyond their control, why do you give a fuck? Is your self-worth dependent on placing yourself above others?
More-read-than-eddit@reddit
I think you might need to be on a few more, to be honest
Moxie_Stardust@reddit
How many do you think I'm on now? Tell me about me.
More-read-than-eddit@reddit
Anywhere between zero and 30? Your extreme hostility is the reason I wrote that, and you aren’t beating the charge with your followup reply.
Moxie_Stardust@reddit
If you feel attacked, it's probably more of a reflection of you than me. I do think the smug arrogance of "ha ha, look at you sorry bastards that depend on medications, I'm so great" deserves a call-out.
karenobus@reddit
Asking "Am I really some kind of exception?" is wild. Hon, you're too old to crave that type of validation... and apparently just thoughtless enough to imply that you're somehow better than people who require medication. I guess congrats on your privilege?
Farahild@reddit
I’m in the Netherlands so no, and neither is anyone else my age unless they have a genuine illness like heart failure 😅 so i have like one friend on long term medication and that’s genuinely it.
Unique_Display_Name@reddit
"hooked on drugs"
your attempt at humble bragging comes off disgusting
emmet80@reddit
Hooked? No, just prone to blood clots, cancer, and ADHD. Didn’t need this rage bait post right now… I should get off Reddit and go to bed.
AshDogBucket@reddit
Yeah, the wording bothered me also.
BennyOcean@reddit
Do one of these polls for the Covid jabs.
Verbull710@reddit
Question should be "how many of you have metabolic syndrome" 👍
anomalocaris_texmex@reddit
Team statin and ACE Inhibitor in the house!
I can't be the only middle aged guy here with high cholesterol and hypertension, can I?
molniya@reddit
What I’m hooked on is having my brain work in something resembling a useful way. Once you get a taste for it, you won’t want to go back. I’m not sure if mine was a lemon from the factory or if it was just mishandled during the breaking-in period, but you have to do some weird shit to keep it going.
Oh, and having enough iron in my blood is cool too.
phoenix0r@reddit
I take HRT for perimenopause and Wegovy for weight loss but I voted no. Im happy cuz I’ve avoided statins, BP meds and other similar aging/lifestyle type drugs so far. /knockwood/
59apache01@reddit
I'm not that lucky. Been on blood pressure meds for a few years.
pnw__halfwatt@reddit
I’m type 1 diabetic. I’ve been on long term meds longer than I haven’t.
StillhasaWiiU@reddit
I take a Motrin a couple times a month before bed, but that's about it.
Funkopedia@reddit
I specifically asked for a prescription allergy medicine, they gave me Singulair. I also have a prescription inhaler but it's been at least a year since i actually used it.
linecookdaddy@reddit
I take a happy pill, a.blood pressure pill, and an otc heartburn med every day, and I have as needed anxiety/insomnia pills (which I don't use nearly as often as I should)
ARealForHonorDev@reddit
I'm not, but I should probably go to a doctor and find out because there bound to be something wrong by now
HereWeFuckingGooo@reddit
You'll probably get diagnosed with ligma.
ARealForHonorDev@reddit
I heard some influencer died from ligma
Few_Improvement_6357@reddit
Balls. That sucks.
kronik419@reddit
Does weed count?
PersonalityAlive6475@reddit
In the words of Marilyn Manson: “I don’t like the drugs but the drugs like me.”
wonderful_rush@reddit
Does birth control count as long term? 🤔
Whatchab@reddit
I have an autoimmune condition and am also in the throws of perimenopause. No shame here on the meds I need to both survive and slightly function.
HereWeFuckingGooo@reddit
Yeah man, I'm hooked on Pantoprazole. Gotta get me a hit of that sweet, sweet, black tar, proton pump inhibitor...
slippedintherain@reddit
I don’t think being on medication that keeps me alive is being “hooked on drugs” 🤷♀️
Luger14@reddit
Just got my first long term med a couple months ago.
