I average about one movie a month, which I'm planning for this weekend. How would you advise me on The Running Man remake (2025)?

Ben Richards, a principled rebel who refuses to submit to a corrupt regime. Yeah, that might be just the escapism I need right about now. Any alternative recommendations?
( never read the book; as I understand it, the book version may differ a bit)
User_Says_What@reddit
I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. Probably the only Michael Cera performance I haven't hated. It's a good time.
Just-Try-2533@reddit
Depends on what you’re looking for. Did you see the original and if so, did you enjoy it?
Personally I thought the 2025 version was fine. It’s not Citizen Kane, but it was an enjoyable couple of hours. Will I ever watch it again? Probably not. But if you’re looking for a mindless action movie it probably will scratch that itch for you.
protekt0r@reddit
We just watched it the other day. I love the original and this one, technically speaking, is about as good. Some of the dialogue near the end gets dumb, but we finished it.
RaulaLive@reddit
Isn't it funny when we/people say, "WE watched XYZ" even when the rest of the "we" isn't around/part of the conversation? Is this a Xennial thing? We most likely grew up watching movies in a group setting with fam & friends, and if you're watching TV alone, you're likely a loner or depressed. So now you can definitely never let anyone imagine you watching anything alone, ever.
Or is it a subconscious couple thing, like if you're not watching a movie with your partner, the relationship is obviously in trouble, or your opinion of the XYZ is only strengthened because somebody else partakes? .... Just random thoughts triggered by your comment. I catch myself saying that all the time, too, and it just makes me wonder. Maybe it makes we wonder... I'll have to ask him.
tultommy@reddit
I kind of agree except that where the original one is very rewatchable because of it's silly campiness, which so many 80s action movies had, the new one is totally watchable but probably only need to do it once. It's a pretty generic action film that doesn't really stand out that much.
Just-Try-2533@reddit
Colman Domingo (The Emcee) was really good. He’s no Richard Dawson, but still excellent.
Solid-Hedgehog9623@reddit
It wasn’t good. But it wasn’t bad either.
SyllabubWeak@reddit
Truthfully, I was disappointed (The original is an all time favorite of mine). I went in knowing the new version more closely followed the book, but figured Edgar Wright would do something in with it. It just felt kind of bland to me. It’s watchable, but that’s about all I can give it
PreetHarHarah@reddit
Who loves you, and who do you love?
Clear_Tangerine5110@reddit
zzz242zzz@reddit
I forgot it was by Edgar Wright until the end credits.
therealpopkiller@reddit
I highly disagree.
It is not watchable.
maninthehighcastle@reddit
Agree. It was barely watchable on a plane when I had nothing else to watch. So disappointing.
PinkBoxDestroyer@reddit
Watchable? Yes. Forgettable? Very yes.
WheelOfFish@reddit
agreed
Appropriate-Food1757@reddit
It’s good. But need to watch the latest Predator movie and the Aliens Earth series on Hulu
VinylHighway@reddit
Forgettable
deefunkt01@reddit
It was good until the 3rd act - feels like they had a good ending but it probably didn't test well so they gave us the happy version.
Stabwank@reddit
I have not watched it, but as it is a current era remake/reboot I would suggest not holding out much hope...
Repulsive_Glove6085@reddit
Hollywood needs to stop trying to make Glen Powell happen. It’s getting a little desperate.
spazz720@reddit
Plus he was woefully miscast
Serious-Ad-5293@reddit
I’m pretty sure it’s Tom Cruise that is trying to make Glen Powell happen. He seems to think he is going to take over his mantle
WickedKoala@reddit
I see Glenn Powell and can barely tell him a part from 30 other 'leading' actors on Hollywood. He's about as generic as it gets.
theforestbather@reddit
I agree.
thebarnacleez@reddit
It’s fine. The Arnold movie though, masterpiece.
PreetHarHarah@reddit
Killian, here is Sub Zero! Now......PLAIN ZERO!
PreetHarHarah@reddit
Don't go thinking you're going to see a cool remake. It's a reimagining.
WritingNerdy@reddit
It’s fun, that’s about it. Plenty better movies to watch, but it is good and I wouldn’t say don’t watch it.
eyeforker@reddit
I had a lot of fun with it because it's a really fun movie
Reportersteven@reddit
If I only watched one movie a month, I would not choose this movie.
NYGiants181@reddit
Haha 😂
NYGiants181@reddit
lol Glenn Powell
jml1020_AH@reddit
Pays homage to the source material...both book and movie. Throwback action movie...doesn't try to be more than what it is. Good cast and appearances throughout. Should have been 15 minutes shorter but thats a minor quibble.
rsauer1208@reddit
Doesn't feel like an Edgar Wright movie though. A lot of his normal tropes aren't in there.
limelight022@reddit
I didn't know this was a Edgar Wright film...gonna check this out. At least the camera will be steady.
NegativeHerons@reddit
The last 15 mins just confused me, honestly. Good up until then.
Cael_NaMaor@reddit
As in lose the last 15min? Or you just wanted it shorter?
Other than that & me lacking any book knowledge of this, I agree with your statement.
protekt0r@reddit
Agree on the length.
thebarbalag@reddit
Great flick. Great message. Timely.
Treadingresin@reddit
I finally watched it earlier this week. As a fan of both the original and the King story I tried to be objective in recognizing it as its own thing, but it was just kind of too much and not enough. Didn't like the lead actor, one note all anger all the time. The ending was just ham fisted in to tie it all up because they wasted too much time on one big action sequence after another.
I feel like there were some good ideas that became little more than set decoration. No good women roles. It just was another product of formula instead of story.
prenderg@reddit
Watch the original instead
Eledridan@reddit
It wasn’t very good. It’s too long and tries to do too many things. There are elements of a good movie in there, but the original is far superior.
HYThrowaway1980@reddit
Skip it.
Some nice ideas, but it’s nowhere near Edgar Wright’s best.
If you’re in the mood for a fun thriller/action film, my recommendation that you might not have seen yet is Headhunters.
Yes, it’s a foreign language film. Yes, it’s fifteen years old. But if you can get over the one-inch barrier of subtitles (and you should, because dubbing is a war crime to the original performances), the film is brilliant. Not a single person I’ve recommended it to didn’t love it.
CantFindMyWallet@reddit
Closer to the book, but still some departures that were ill-advised and give little credit to the audience. Just didn't have the balls to adapt it right.
gerardkimblefarthing@reddit
I thought the same- the book's ending was the point. Why do what the remake did? Completely defeated the premise.
CantFindMyWallet@reddit
The other thing that pissed me off was >!having him try tonsave the goons who were trying to murder him when he realized the building was going to blow up. In the book he blew the building up on purpose because he was trying to kill them.!< But we can't have a hero with even a single drop of moral ambiguity in modern blockbusters. Everyone has to be a paragon of virtue because audiences are full of fucking idiots.
NatoTheLastRedditer@reddit
the why (following book except for that) is the cowardice of capitalism
gerardkimblefarthing@reddit
You're zero percent incorrect.
Major_Swordfish508@reddit
In the book doesn’t he >!fly the plane into the building?!<. Think it’s still gonna be a long while for that one to show up in movies.
gerardkimblefarthing@reddit
Yup. Either commit or make a different movie.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
The original Hunger Games
PlentyOfMoxie@reddit
Aggressively mid-tier. I don't mind Glen Powell like some people, and I love Edgar Wright, but this movie suffers from a lack of focus, resulting in something that you won't think about again after you've seen it.
HopelessMagic@reddit
I really liked it. I thought it was better than the first.
jarvis646@reddit
As someone who has read the book and loved the first film (and hated the total recall remake), I really enjoyed it. Way better than I expected and super entertaining.
SingleinGVA@reddit
Stay very far away. Was terrible. This guy can not act at all.
activatedcarbon@reddit
It's only worth watching if you're from Glasgow and want to laugh at how little they had to change Buchanan street bus station to look dystopian.
PhantoWolf@reddit
The original is a favorite.
The new movie... I watched it a month or so ago and I don't remember a single scene. haha
Cael_NaMaor@reddit
Do it... also, 1/month is child's play my dude... ramp it up!!!
Boredzilla@reddit
Personally, I would describe it as a great example of the kind of 7/10 movie you'll enjoy but only watch once.
Loud-Chicken6046@reddit
It was ok, but I was drunk and watch 1-2 movies a night.
herb2018@reddit
it good
prodigaldummy@reddit
Did not enjoy. Do not recommend.
Verbull710@reddit
He just doesn't have "it"
BlackLioConvoy@reddit
Don't waste your time
Bored_Acolyte_44@reddit
This movie fucking rocks.
Spiritual-Promise402@reddit
This is how disconnected i am, i had no idea there was a remake
concreteghost@reddit
Was not good. Stick to the Arnold
desiduolatito@reddit
It is the spiritual step cousin of One Battle After Another. Completely different genre, same inspiration.
IsopodNecessary9844@reddit
It wasn’t terrible imo
mtron32@reddit
It had potential and then it went off the rails not bad though
NatoTheLastRedditer@reddit
if you enjoy the book, watch this movie, if you enjoy the original I would be more cautious
Hail Mary was great if you need a backup
shiftdown@reddit
I never saw the original so the plot was all new to me. It was awful. I sat through it and was interested to see what happened next. The ended felt a little to swift with not quite enough catharsis, but it was fun overall.
TuckerCarlsonsOhface@reddit
I loved the original, and even read the book. I was disappointed with the remake.
FabergeEggnog@reddit
Not much escapism here as it's a grim dystopia and the tone is not 'fun'. It's also one of Wright's weaker outings. I would suggest going through Wright's Cornetto trilogy (starting with Shaun of the Dead) instead if you haven't yet.
If you're looking for a bloody yet entertaining hunt, I suggest you try Ready or Not (2019) or The Hunt (2020). They also make a good double bill.
ZzzSleep@reddit
First half is decent but the second half went downhill for me.
al_0_n_3@reddit
Skip it. Absolute garbage unfortunately. I had hopes thanks to Edgar Wright's involvement, but nope.
platinumperineum@reddit
Its a totally different movie
Reasonable-Wave8093@reddit
I liked it! accurate to the times too
poofyhairguy@reddit
I liked the movie hated the ending
Separate-Sky-1451@reddit
As far as remakes go, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It's pure entertainment, no thinking required.
jojotherider@reddit
Low expectations get met. I watched on a plane and enjoyed it. Im glad i e see it in a theater. I also enjoy the fast and furious movies with a low expectation if that gives to any reference to how i judge movies.
GuidoX4@reddit
Went the same way as Total Recall.
Technically better - but missing the "soul" of the movie that made it great.
autonimity@reddit
When the movie ends it just feels like it's only halfway there. Other than that it's kind of fun but not as fun as the first movie.
16Shells@reddit
meh, it’s a movie. not terrible, not great. i was whelmed. if you’re only doing one movie a month there are so many more fantastic movies out there to watch.
christopherDdouglas@reddit
Arnold Running Man is just 80s camp. This one is a bit more true of an adaptation. It's fine. Enjoyable popcorn action flick with a better budget.
reasonable_bill@reddit
Meh
FewAdhesiveness7146@reddit
I loved it because it is a lot closer to the book than the original. It was what I was hoping for in a movie. Very entertaining.
The_Goondocks@reddit
It was a solid meh. Pales in comparison to the original
Longjumping-Dealer-8@reddit
Not much like the o.g. One … However had some good reworks and storylines
I was a little confused about the new dollar system like money just changed to make free tv?
ghoster32111@reddit
I like others watched it on a plane and its best to think of it as a reimagining of the book by steven king than a remake of the movie. I actually enjoyed it because ot wasn't a remake of the original movie. Its not gonna win any Oscars but either did the original movie. Overall it was fun worth seeing.
therealpopkiller@reddit
Sucks, don’t bother
knivesofsmoothness@reddit
Meh.
SMHatitall@reddit
I was pleasantly surprised. There is so much slop out there even an average movie with a good budget and decent acting will get me every time.
Maxcorps2012@reddit
I will agree the original holds a special place in my heart. But this version is much more topical. Its not a masterpiece but I really enjoyed it.
ManiacRichX@reddit
im sure it will be better than Robocop's reboot
CantFindMyWallet@reddit
and boy if that isn't damning with faint praise
carlivar@reddit
It was okay. The ending was dumb.
bloomsday289@reddit
It's not great.. but its better than most action movies they are making. Thankfully it not a marvel franchise
CarpetAlternative191@reddit
Sucks. Watch original and call it a night
fire_lord_akira@reddit
I will preface with, I love the original (not because it's a great movie but was so much fun when I watched it at a young age). Secondly, I don't really like Glen Powell (I like some of the movies he's in but I feel like they are trying waaaaay too hard to make this guy a leading man)
That said, I watched this movie about a week ago with low expectations and it was a pretty good watch. I still like the original much more but I don't regret it and it turned out better than I was expecting (even though this is no where near the top of my fave Edgar Wright movies).
Solution66@reddit
It’s a cool concept and it’s entertaining, but if your expecting it to be similar to the first you will be disappointed
HollyHazard@reddit
As someone who loved the book, lovwd the cheesie Arnold one for what it was. This one is pretty solid. I actually enjoyed it better as it was closer to the book. Worth the watch
Squish_Miss@reddit
I enjoyed it! It's supposed to be closer to the book than the Schwarzenegger adaptation. The OG Running Man is a favorite of mine.
PerfectlyCromulent42@reddit
I watched this on a plane and enjoyed myself. It’s not gonna make you think too hard and it will hold your attention.
realauthormattjanak@reddit
Haven't seen the new one but apparently it's closer to the book. Less muscle machine more every man, takes place over a longer period, etc.
Perfect_Molasses7365@reddit
I liked the old one as a kid because of the action. Saw this one last weekend. Would recommend. My wife liked it as well. It’s a bit long, but it’s good
