Homemade Black Olive cake (story in text)

So the story is that when I was like 5 or 6 my mom told me that she was going to home make my birthday cake and I could pick any fruit I wanted as a filling... But I was a picky eater back then and didn't like cake with fruit in it. So she just asked me what my favorite fruit was instead, and I was a smartass and said Black Olives. Then I was upset she wouldn't make me a black olive cake.
So now 30 years later I have finally made that dream come true
Spoiler for how it tasted:
>!I guess it kinda worked? It brought out the sweetness of the olives and the bit of saltiness cut through the mellow flavors of the whipped cream and cake. Everyone who tried it ended up eating all of it but the general consensus is that most other fruit would have worked a lot better but the cake and cream were delicious. I'd say that's mostly a success and that I never need to do this again!<

Thats disgusting
xahhfink6@reddit (OP)
I like olives
CinemaDork@reddit
I mean I love hamburgers but I'm not putting them in a cake š
weeooweeoowee@reddit
Black olives š green olives š
AdOk684@reddit
Yes. Black olives taste like dirt.
Easy-Concentrate2636@reddit
I hope you used cream cheese for the frosting. I could see it working with cream cheese- almost like a soft bagel combo.
xahhfink6@reddit (OP)
Nah it was a very light whipped cream frosting, stabilized with a little gelatin. The recipe I was adapting used strawberries as the filling
CoralQuokka@reddit
You should've fucking used strawberries hahah
UseDue6373@reddit
Thatās hilarious. I would absolutely eat a slice and I donāt even like sweets
alsdkchl@reddit
Like is clearly an understatement.
TBellOHAZ@reddit
I like pizza but you don't see me putting it in my ca-
Nevermind, I'd try it.
BlauMink@reddit
Olive gang, let's gooooo
TheSultan1@reddit
More like olive gag.

Ok Iām gonna take this further:
LonnieJaw748@reddit
mascarpone*, please
Putrid_View8566@reddit
Slized olives
Treacle_Pendulum@reddit
Candy them too
Putrid_View8566@reddit
We are gonna see that thing on a charcuterie board then and I dont know whether to be excited to how amazing it might be or horrified as to the proofs of God's inability to stop humanity commiting atrocities

Tjis does indeed work with grapes on the other hand. I love grape cake, would make it for my exes birthday

Congratulations, you're a DnD bard now.
EllaMcWho@reddit
one of my favorite sandwiches is olive cream cheese on toasted marbled rye... imagining this with cream cheese icing... hmmmm
LukaIncic@reddit
Now Iām curious how it tastes lmao
Darkhallows27@reddit
Iād give anything to unsee this
wolfmothar@reddit
You need an pregnancy test like yesterday
Albertagus@reddit
As someone who HATES olives (I keep trying to like them and I keep being sorely disappointed). This is highly disturbing. Buuuuut you nailed the sub š
yesmilady@reddit
I like you OP and that kinds of makes me mad
atworkthough@reddit
Stop! >:(
Revenge-of-the-Jawa@reddit
I think if you went with chopping/mincing the olives and stirring them into the batter and paired it with cream cheese frosting and some sort of nut, kind of like a carrot cake, it might actually be pretty good
AveragelyTallPolock@reddit
I fucking love black olives. Eat em right out of the can.
This is an abomination. Never cook again
HistoryOk6788@reddit
CAN?!?Ā
xahhfink6@reddit (OP)
No yeah that's fair
Madisonstarr@reddit
Sounds like baking is still on the table.
7-SE7EN-7@reddit
I really don't like olives
This is beautiful, keep cooking
91Jammers@reddit
I love olives and would definitely eat this. At least try.
creatyvechaos@reddit
If someone handed me a slice, I'd probably eat it. At the very least pick everything apart and eat it that way. No way would I spend 30 years dreaming of it
RamonaAStone@reddit
I, too, am team black olives. On pizza or subs, I want olives to be 90% of the toppings. But this...this is just wrong.
LOTRfreak101@reddit
Black olives on burritos and tacos are amazing. But cake?
Brother_J_La_la@reddit
I think olives are one of the nastiest things to eat (cooking with the oil is fine). Once, my ex came to kiss me, and basically spat a chewed up olive into my mouth because she thought that was humor. Disgusting food and behavior. She hated all seafood, but loved egg rolls. I refused to buy any kind but shrimp after that nonsense.
corn-wrassler@reddit
Thatās a sad thing to read
DragonScrivner@reddit
This is a nightmare. Good job
Little_Shark219@reddit
Genuinely the mix of flavors doesn't sound that bad. Would try a slice
El_Zarco@reddit
Reminds me of the person who was determined to create the dish he had seen in a dream

remykixxx@reddit
I literally just ate a whole can of black olives as a midnight snack with hot sauce and ranch. I would try this for sure.
FormingTheVoid@reddit
Sounds more edible than any other olive in a cake tbh. Still would have preferred strawberry though.
AltruisticSalamander@reddit
A worthwhile experiment, it could have been a modern classic, who knows
LatterParty182@reddit
Thatās good actually
papayatwentythree@reddit
OP, please look up the smƶrgƄstƄrta, the Swedish sandwich cake! I haven't seen them with olives (mostly shrimp) but the potential is there
karoshikun@reddit
if instead of cream it had been made with cream cheese, it would have balanced it a bit better, i think.
makes me want to try it!
hollandaisesawce@reddit
My toddler is obsessed with olives. Weād make something like this unironically for her. lol
Rakins_420@reddit
I enjoy many of these things
Separately
MrMarkeh@reddit
You cooked. I wish you didnāt.
Many_Bat_@reddit
They walked so that we may run. Salute. Never forget.
themehboat@reddit
I thought it was going to be a savory cake. If you made the layers with herb loaf and whipped feta or something I bet it would be amazing.
xahhfink6@reddit (OP)
See, my friends had tried that once after hearing me talk about my childhood yearning for olive cake... They made like an olive oil cake with a little black olive on top.
But nah, I wanted this. It was a recipe for a Japanese fluffy white cake but I replaced the strawberries with olives.
CardamomDaydream@reddit
Are you able to share the recipe at all? I'm not sure I'd ever try it with olives (despite my love for them), but the cake itself sounds mighty tasty!
xahhfink6@reddit (OP)
Sure lemme see if it'll let me link: https://omnivorescookbook.com/japanese-strawberry-shortcake/?utm_source=Pinterest&utm_medium=organic
I skipped making the syrup/mash but made up for it with about 30% more sugar in the whipped cream
Chimes320@reddit
You are a raging psychopath. Never let anyone change you.
knivesout0@reddit
Now do it with green ones
MindOfErick@reddit
Doesn't look too good, but I'd be willing to try this but not as a cake. Maybe some king of mini sweet egg tarts topped with black olives might be good
gothiccxcontrabitch6@reddit
This actually sounds super good but I love a salty sweet combo. Maybe Iāll try it one day.
xlnc2608@reddit
No shit lmao
beccadahhhling@reddit
All his friends eating the cakeā¦
ettubrutusvp@reddit
You actually made it. That's a commitment. It doesn't look rettible, childhood you would be proud!
Brighter_Days_Ahead4@reddit
I once made a cheesecake with apricot and picholine olives sauce to go on top. It was delicious.
Kleorah@reddit
Now come back after you try this with olive brine and olive oil as replacements in the cake batter, too š
emmyemu@reddit
I donāt think it would work because of the temperature differences but olive oil whipped cream sounds so fun
Jononucleosis@reddit
Thats just vegan mayo
BeWonderfulBeDope@reddit
I used to love cream cheese and black olive sandwiches on white bread as a kid, I bet a black olive cream cheese frosting would slap!
Mission_Wolf579@reddit
Black olives and cream cheese are glorious together! Back in the day, a party wasn't a party unless there was a tray of celery stalks stuffed with black olives and cream cheese.
Kidslikeus@reddit
This but cream cheese with shit like chives and chopped salami mixed inside and cornbread instead of cake and you wouldāve had something
corn-wrassler@reddit
I love what you did with free will.
fishsticks40@reddit
Free will is an illusion.Ā
OP had no choice but to make this cake.Ā
BTMillie@reddit
The olive cake is inevitable xD

LauraLand27@reddit
Thanks for the help with my diet!
tzentzak@reddit
I was thinking it would be a savory cake at first. Never met an olive I didn't like but I don't know if I could stomach that lol.
Turbulent_Yam2575@reddit
If my friend served me this Iād punch them in the fucking face
RevolutionaryKey8565@reddit
It'll make a turd.
SigmaBunny@reddit
I'd try it
Whorehammer@reddit
Make it with kalamata olives and we've got a deal.
emmyemu@reddit
I think you should make it again but cut up the olives very small and add it into the cake itself and maybe even do this with an olive oil cake recipe for maximum olive
82tobys@reddit
Lexail@reddit
How do so many people like olives. They taste like cum or mud. No in between.
Librosinleer@reddit
You transcended humanity
RadarSmith@reddit
I like Olives and I like cake. what you've created was a masterful culinary abomination that Dr. Frankenstein would be proud of.
You have my utmost respect.

Reminds me of that episode from The Office when Michael is eating black olives in mayonnaise because he wanted chocolate chip ice cream but didnāt have access to it.
BlauMink@reddit
FEED ME OLIVES!
Narrow-Hall8070@reddit
Whatās with the onion?
littleclaww@reddit
Okay here's the thing. I like olives and I like cake. I'm curious how a savory cake could work but I also would love to see this as one of those sandwich cakes/sandwichon.
icefas85@reddit
I love black olives. Definitely have my doubts but Iād give it a whirl š«”
