That’s one of my favorite Ares lines, along with “You're like a snake! You're li-- you're like, like one of those three-headed-- dogs! I don't know what-- ! You're mean! If I could open you up-- I would show people the mean inside you!”
Ok-Jackfruit-6873@reddit
what episode is that from??
duardd@reddit
No that’s God fearing child 5x11 I believe
itsascreambaby96@reddit (OP)
Coming Home at the end.
GothicXenomorph@reddit
Nobody else could deliver these great lines like Kevin Smith. He was Ares.
Cruise1313@reddit
Absolutely! I loved him as Ares and was such a wonderful guy. I was so fortunate to have met him.
Away-Living5278@reddit
I'd also add when he says I love you after Xena walks away in Tartarus.
FunCase8801@reddit
How about the anti-X/A shippers stop shitting on the X/A subs?? It’s obnoxious & I don’t want to read it. I don’t shit on the X/G subs.
stardust102@reddit
I agree he is a creep I watched motherhood last night to if he loved Xena soo much apparently why did he move on to Eve livia straight up away he would of been both mum and daughter creepy
TAFKA_DarkSpecterSBM@reddit
I'm thinking it was a bit before he moved on to Livia seeing as how when Xena "died" she was ab infant. It's only immediate to our perspective. It was likely two decades for him.
Aggravating_Mix8959@reddit
He was a Greek god who may or not be her father. He doesn't care about these things. They all slept with everything that moved. Look at his dad.
IntrepidSnowball@reddit
This is my take as well. I actually love how gross Ares is because it feels authentic to actual Greek mythology.
Ok-Jackfruit-6873@reddit
he didn't know but to be fair is still kind a creep. Don't forget he slept with Hope too. It's possible Gabrielle is the only one he didn't sleep with and who's to say what got cut from the scrolls ...
savingrain@reddit
His pairing with Callisto was my favorite
Ok-Jackfruit-6873@reddit
I feel like he was only interested in her when she was in Xena's body, and that was her favorite part of it too ...
FiteMeMage@reddit
They were so nasty about it almost a shame XWP wasn’t on HBO or something 😂

God?l, I loved everything about Ares and Xena and Gabrielle’s relationship. So many nasty messy love interests (Ares, Aphrodite, Callisto come to mind specifically) were available to The Girlies and it was always good lol. I think Ares truly loved Xena the only way he could and she really did feel… something for him as well. Obviously he was not good for her, but there was a deep dark passion there and it was delicious and this line says it all.
mickeyhellhound@reddit
I love Ares so much. Him and Aphrodite were my favorite characters(aside from our beautiful and powerful lesbian duo) lol
Cruise1313@reddit
Same for me.
Did you see him in Hercules? In a “Strange World” parallel dimension hisoutfit was white and he was the god of love. 😂
galliumsilver@reddit
He was INCREDIBLE in that! I would have loved so much to see more Ares, God of love. I don't know how anybody, including him, kept a straight face with some of that stuff, it was utter gold.
Cruise1313@reddit
Right? I was thinking the same thing and would have loved seeing bloopers from his scenes as the god of love. 😂😂😂
mickeyhellhound@reddit
I did not, that’s wild lol
Icy-Sir-8414@reddit
Actually I think Xena was more bisexual and Gabby was more pansexual
mickeyhellhound@reddit
Yea I agree lol
Evilbuffy14@reddit
I watched this episode just the other day. I mean, for me, the other day could be any day within the last five years, but it was definitely this week. I love this speech. He answered his own questions from earlier episodes, though. 'She knew what you needed: unconditional and unselfish love'. It's a beautiful speech and it's nice to know that he finally understands why she loves Gabrielle so much.
Ok-Jackfruit-6873@reddit
which he then basically forget later, then learns again kind of, then forgets again and goes back to dismissing Gabrielle entirely again in the future ...
Evilbuffy14@reddit
He's an emotional yoyo, for sure.
DarlaLunaWinter@reddit
So for me, I always found this line defined a level of him...truly starting to accept that his passion for her could never be the love he idolized. Love in the grecco-roman sense was complex, tragic, and for the gods, obsessive and possessive. I think what makes this so poignant is it is also him admitting that there are parts of Xena he will never be able to touch...and tbh the same with Gabrielle. Xena is so wonderful to me because she's complex, and her love for Gabrielle is unlike Aries, but there's darkness she didn't always understand. Even after everything with Hope, but she loves Xena. She believes Xena can reclaim her true values, and Gabrielle *values* giving Xena support to do better. But Aries wants her to give into his values. I've always believed his two most "true" relationships are Xena and Aphrodite.
In a way, I found what he did in the time jump so disappointing because it feels... like he went backwards when this moment actually, and him making sure Xena is lying in-state basically with his biggest rival? So it always sucked that he still gave in to her worst nature.
pastajewelry@reddit
I'm sorry, but he's a creep.
CaptainQueen1701@reddit
He’s a Greek god. That’s the point. He’s not human. He’s not ‘a guy’.
pastajewelry@reddit
Gods can be creeps, too.
Ok-Jackfruit-6873@reddit
I mean yes, I can't argue with you on that one, AND he has his moments ...
pastajewelry@reddit
Yeah, I enjoyed the character. But I didn't ship them together.
stardust102@reddit
Me neither wasn’t a fan of season five
Cruise1313@reddit
I too enjoyed the character but the only person I wanted to see Xena with was her true love Gabrielle.
SakuraTacos@reddit
He’s a weirdoOoOo 🎶
I can’t imagine I would’ve liked Ares as much if he wasn’t Kevin. Kevin brought so much of his charm to the character and had such electric on-screen chemistry with Lucy. But then I’m skeeved out whenever I take inventory of everything Ares has done throughout the show; took advantage of Xena’s body when Callisto was in it, tried to seduce Gabrielle, seduced Livia, manipulated Gabrielle and Xena at their most vulnerable during The Rift, got his godhood back and immediately manipulated the Amazons, hasn’t given up on chasing Xena’s soul thousands of years later, etc etc
Helpful_Hour1984@reddit
In his defense, he didn't know that Livia was Xena's daughter. She was just his type and she had the power to start wars on a massive scale, that's why he went after her before Xena woke up.
Ok_Kangaroo_2160@reddit
I do think he loved Xena as much as he could, but in light of his persistent determination to get his way, he works as a good way to physically represent Xena's fight to choose to be good rather than the woman she once was. It will likely never end, but just as Ares tries to sway her to her past, Gabrielle is her future. At every turn. Even then, because of Gabrielle's influence, Xena is better equipped to fight against his advances.
X+A was especially emphasized in S5, and I particularly hate how he tried to equate what Xena was going through with Livia to his pain for her refusal to love him. I actually enjoyed their chemistry before then, but idk I found it hard to find them compelling after that.
But you're absolutely spot on about Kevin. He made Ares likeable even when he was being annoying or a total jerk.
SakuraTacos@reddit
I found Ares at his most compelling when he became a mortal. Having to [gasp] compromise, be mindful, and depend on Xena and Gabrielle. Loved seeing the humanity in him shine. Then Path of Vengeance + Soul Possession came along and demolished all that precious hard-earned character development!
pastajewelry@reddit
Yeah, I agree. I liked the actor, but objectively the character was creepy. I mean, he's some ancient being sleeping or trying to sleep with everyone and their daughters. I liked him when he was mortal. That was a good episode.
Ok-Jackfruit-6873@reddit
everyone and possibly his own daughter 😭
BoniMarce@reddit
right? i thought i was making that up that he was potentially Xena’s dad?
Cruise1313@reddit
Yes, in season 3 The Furies Ares implies he had a relationship with Cyrene Xena’s mother and is her true father.
In the Ties that Bind episode he appears as Atrius claiming to be Xena’s father.
BoniMarce@reddit
vindication for u/pastajewelry calling him a creep then
SakuraTacos@reddit
For sure! I totally forgot he impregnated Hope too, so he really did sleep with everyone and their daughters! While still telling Xena he ~loved~ her. Yikes! There’s villainous and then there’s that
Btw I’m sorry you’re getting downvoted, I hate when reddit doesn’t get that downvoting is for comments that don’t contribute to the conversation or are wildly out-of-pocket. Even if you have an unpopular opinion (which yours really isn’t, lots of people feel the same as you about Ares), at least it’s another perspective to start conversations with
pastajewelry@reddit
It's cool. I stand by what I said, and I can afford a few downvotes. I appreciate your support! 🙂
CaptainQueen1701@reddit
Nothing was sexier than Xena and Ares on screen. Their chemistry was insane. Kevin Smith was such a great actor. He was gone too soon.
Tricky_Direction_897@reddit
This and the sooner die in your arms comment. There was a shipper site called that back in the day, I loved it
itsascreambaby96@reddit (OP)
ShipperSeasons?
Tricky_Direction_897@reddit
No it was a fan fiction site for X/A, not the Shipper Seasons. The site was called Sooner Die in Your Arms. It was awesome
napalmnacey@reddit
I’ll love them forever. 🥰❤️
Actual_Bet6584@reddit
He was one of my favorites
Ok-Jackfruit-6873@reddit
That is a good line though. I love that he acknowledged Gabrielle's place here (and went the trouble of transporting her body right next to Xena's, even though he won't see him carry her first) as he is intermittently pretty dismissive if Gabs entirely.
