Considering the world, RATM seems like an appropriate choice. Which one are you going for?

Self titled is obv a classic, but man there are some bangers on the other 2 albums!

100% Evil Empire

Im incredibly sorry for not staying on topics, but I feel like we need to talk about the OP’s Apple device. It’s definitely an iPod from ~2006 +/- right? The fact that it still operates is damn impressive!
GenghisConnieChung@reddit
My brother still has a working iPod Classic with the wheel and an actual spinning hard drive in it.
811545b2-4ff7-4041@reddit
I've got one, bought in 2007. Battery is a bit shot but otherwise it's in good condition.
However.. I now rock a more modern device with microSD storage, bluetooth, 3.5 / 4.4mm output and touch screen.
German_Merman@reddit
I had one of these still in good condition but I gave it to my kid instead of a phone. It had justabout all the things he wanted a phone for - photos, videos, etc but without the connectivity. Great idea! But then he dropped it several times and now it's fucked.
TifanAching@reddit
I have an ipod colour that is probably maybe 2004/2005 that still runs. They have their faults but apple hardware can have decent longevity.
GenghisConnieChung@reddit
I still have every iPhone I’ve ever owned except my 3G which I sold to a collector a few years ago. They all still work. I also still have my iPad Mini 2 and my last 3 Macs are all still going strong, including my 2011 MacBook Pro.
If you take good care of their stuff it can last a very long time. I’ve only ever had one die on me, a 2003 Titanium G4 PowerBook, and that was after over 10 years of very heavy use.
Occams_AK47@reddit
6th gen, 60GB ipod classic still kicking here. Had to replace the battery some years ago.
therightpedal@reddit (OP)
Yup! Still going strong! I thought about getting another one with more storage (I have 32GB) but wooo, they are expensive now.
EggstaticAd8262@reddit
No one mentions “A bullet in the head”??
It’s literally media control, propaganda, and mental conditioning. This is what’s brought facism to the US and it’s spreading like a disease
OJSimpsonSubMod@reddit
I sure could go for some "Hadda Be Playing on the Jukebox" these days...
TangFiend@reddit
From a man who is ok with old ass phones, that is one old ass phone. Do you just use that for music?
therightpedal@reddit (OP)
It's actually an iPod. Guess it's hard to tell in the pic
noonesaidityet@reddit
Battle is extremely underrated, IMHO. The sound is so thick and heavy, and the low end just pummels. I think EE is their masterpiece, but Battle is so good. As much as I love self-titled, I've heard it soooo many times that it would probably be my last choice. But if someone threw it on, I'm still listening start to finish with zero complaints.
RATM is one of my wife's favorite bands, and she's probably listened to Renegades more than the other three since it came out.
therightpedal@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I listened to Battle first today and remember it being my least favorite. But after relistening, it is awfully good. Sound and production, as you mentioned, was very good. Felt more mature, more developed.
limelight022@reddit
I only know their singles so i'll say the album with Bulls on Parade.
sly-3@reddit
Because you're worth it, and also because Brazil crowds are the only kind of "crazy" that can equal a Rage show: https://youtu.be/kjUM1QE8vOk?si=p_GdZLCKAcgf3N6_
therightpedal@reddit (OP)
That's Evil Empire. You... you...you've never listened to the WHOLE album?!?!? Please do that ASAP. You can thank me/us later. You will not regret it.
bagofdounts@reddit
The Ghost of Tom Joad hits for me lately.
Rivas-al-Yehuda@reddit
Evil Empire. I didn't own a lot of CD's when I was young, but I did have that one, and I loved it.
unicorncholo@reddit
Loved them back in the day, saw them ‘97, but with covid? Zack “fuck you, just do what they tell you”. Hahaha, eat a dick!
German_Merman@reddit
I was in the car with my 9 year-old the other day and Killing in the Name came on the radio. I reached over to change it, but then I thought no, it's about time he learned.
So now he knows exactly what to say if a racist cop tries to boss him around.

The entire American Idiot album from Green Day is pretty cathartic.
Daylight-Silence@reddit
The other two have their moments, but the debut is bell-to-bell. No contest
BasvanS@reddit
I was talking to a friend about musical education this weekend and he got his daughter to listen to RATM for the first time. Can you imagine experiencing that for the first time? No skip tracks.
therightpedal@reddit (OP)
I did this for my kid today except he's 4½ 😆. I just asked him "fast or slow or happy or angry?" Angry it was.
The genetics are strong.
BasvanS@reddit
Fast and angry would have been Slayer?
therightpedal@reddit (OP)
Well, they were "or" questions. Slayer isn't really angry per se, more heavy.
Fast and angry, I'm thinking Minor Threat.
PokerbushPA@reddit
That kid gonna be alright.
Be sure to feed that kids brain with books. Lots of books. All the books.
GenghisConnieChung@reddit
I introduced my son to the first one a few weeks ago. His face at the end of Killing In The Name was fucking priceless.
That’s my favourite, followed closely by Evil Empire. The first one is just so well engineered and produced and just really enjoyable to listen to. I’m an audio engineer and it’s one of the albums I use to calibrate my ears to a new listening/mixing environment because it just sounds so damn good.
Side note, back around 2008 (I think) I was in Vancouver to play New Music West. Out r producer was good friends with Ggggarth Richardson and hooked us up with a tour of his studio, so I got to see his actual platinum record for it which was really cool.
WesLotts@reddit
Evil Empire, front to back, then on to Run the Jewels
anhydrousslim@reddit
First album is a classic, but Evil Empire is more sentimental for me based on coming out when I graduated high school, so associated with a lot of good memories. Which is weird to say about a Rage album, but there we go.
therightpedal@reddit (OP)
So good.
Skjellyfetti13@reddit
S/T. Doesn’t get any better than Killing in the Name.
humanist-misanthrope@reddit
My random thought of the day, after I learned what eponymous meant, I stopped using self-titled simply because eponymous is so much fun to say. It always makes me think of hip-hop-anonymous each time, which is also a lot of fun to say.
GenghisConnieChung@reddit
Not as much fun as Hip-Hopopotamus.
CSWorldChamp@reddit
My music tastes trend more GenX than millennial, so my go to is Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It.”
BlankPaperTiger@reddit
Evil Empire for me and even when the world isn't in a state like its current one.
mist_kaefer@reddit
Evil Empire, but add the song from the Crow 2 soundtrack at the end.
BlankPaperTiger@reddit
I didn't know they also had a song on The Crow 2 soundtrack.
ParticularBed6338@reddit
Shuffle all 3… this is my go to for any artist.
therightpedal@reddit (OP)
I just listened to all 3, full album at a time. So fucking good.
ParticularBed6338@reddit
Nice. I love “Wake Up” off of the first album. For some reason that track makes the hair on my arms stand up, I can really feel the passion going on inside of him. I’ve also thought of making it my alarm clock song but I don’t know if I can handle that at 6am every day, I might go around hating the world even more. 🤘🏻
therightpedal@reddit (OP)
Great song. Yeah, I don't know if I could start my day with that though

therightpedal@reddit (OP)
iPod but yeah....
humanist-misanthrope@reddit
No doubt the first album is iconic and legendary but Evil Empire hits on another level IMO. People of the Sun, Revolver, Down Rodeo, Vietnow, Year of the Boomerang, Without a Face, Wind Below, and Roll Right really seem to go deeper in story telling to me, and drill into issues that still persist. This album sets up Testify and Sleep Now in the Fire.
The anger in their songs gets more mature as their albums progress. It always speaks of growth to me
therightpedal@reddit (OP)
Excellent analysis and I agree
HighSeasArchivist@reddit
Rich people really upset with rich people.
coopnjaxdad@reddit
Evil Empire or Renegades for me.
humanist-misanthrope@reddit
Man, I had the Ghost of Tom Joad on a loop recently. Springsteen absolutely crushed the lyrics and RATM brings some deep passion to it (not to say the Boss doesn’t but damn does it hit a different level with RATM).
coopnjaxdad@reddit
Rage's version adds a bit of edge to it for sure.
0905-15@reddit
Upvote for Renegades. Such a kick-ass collection

dangerous_strainer@reddit
Was never a huge fan of these guys, but I really loved their rhythm section and Tom wrote some great riffs (well into Audioslave as well). My favourite tune of theirs isn't on any of their records but is on The Crow soundtrack. The guitar solo alone is pretty sweet.
aravarth@reddit
Prophets of Rage is also a good listen.
Soulforge411@reddit
Evil empire all day
Formisonic@reddit
S/T
The production isn’t quite as sharp, but the tracklist is unrivaled, imo.
AidesAcrossAmerica@reddit
Battle for LA all day. I don't even go back to the S/T anymore. Sure, it has nostalgia, but rhythm section is so so sooooo much more interesting on every album after. It sounds so dated, both musically and production.
throwitallaway@reddit
Self Titled is objectively the best one. But I'll always have a special place in my heart for Evil Empire. I also feel Evil Empire is harder and Self Titled a little funkier. I prefer the harder approach.
therightpedal@reddit (OP)
I pick self titled as best but then listen to Evil Empire and second guess it. So many stompers on there
bigpapirick@reddit
All of them on shuffle!

I did all 3 but not on shuffle.

DarthBster@reddit
Can't go wrong with any of them. It's all still so relevant and probably always will be. I'd also throw in their contributions to The Crow and Godzilla soundtracks. Killer.
Smokeythemagickamodo@reddit
Evil Empire was peak RATM. Perfect grit with fucking amped up bombs like SnakeCharmer and Tire Me

Personally, I wake up and go to bed to Killing in the Name
SweatyCut4847@reddit
Debut and Battle.
MightyPenguinRoars@reddit
This is why I love RATM. There are people on here swearing by Evil Empire, but that’s my least favorite. They have something for everyone!
I would be hard pressed to choose between Battle of LA and Renegades. But the OG is great too. Argh!!! Man picking is too hard.
