The 2010 Volkswagen Scirocco R ($22,888 CAD) is a spicy hatchback coupe with a 265 horsepower 2.0L turbo engine. It’s a special car for James, since it is the superlative version of his attainable dream car when he was a young lad in England.
Available in both DSG and manual, the R version cranked up the boost to 17 PSI, while aiming to be a lighter and more nimble Golf.
But how does it drive? And will it live up to the expectations of James’ younger self?
Thomas and James can’t wait to find out! We hope you enjoy the episode.

James: putting the fear of God into construction workers since 2026.

That was so fucking funny. Who knew a car could have perfect comedic timing

I never understood how this doesn't cannibalize Golf sales. Was always more aesthetically pleasing than the Golf though.

They were as expensive as Golf Rs while being front wheel drive like the GTIs. They had their HP rated right between the R and the Gti, but were much heavier than the GTI and if I'm not wrong, heavier than the R too.
Other than the looks that certain people appreciated,, this had nothing better that is tangible to offer than either of the GTI or R.
Geofferz@reddit
Because it's less practical and not that much better looking.

whhhaaaat?!? Iirc this was released during Golf 5. Looks wise it absolutely should have cannibalized it.

IIRC, European Golf didn't offer 3-door version because of it.
Anyway, 13 years ago, 3-door hatch was still in a peak period for European automakers, as there were so many 3-door hot hatches that you could buy.
Kernoriordan@reddit
They offered a 3dr mk5?

Correct. Golf 8 was the first model to be only offered in 5-door-trim. There was a lot of overlap in production of Scirocco/Golf 3-door. They competed with each other to an extend. Both were ultimately not really successful in today's market. Scirocco was compromised in regards to space in the back, visibility and access to the trunk. Looked much better (sportier and modern) imho. I had an 1.4 TSI Scirocco for a few years when it was fairly new. Really good car.
TritiumNZlol@reddit
Quite a bit more expensive too
Sonicsteel@reddit
I had one in 2009, and asked that same question. The answer I was given is that the production runs were capped as to not eat into golf sales.
costafilh0@reddit
Never heard of it.
Looks nice.
Missing AWD and MT to be a true classic.
ArseneWainy@reddit
11:20 into the video you can see where the driver nearly crashed into a traffic controller guys. Oops
tazercow@reddit
Anyone else remember the Scirocco iPhone game? I think the whole thing was just racing Sciroccos around the Nurburgring. Wild to think there was a time when automakers would commission an entire game just to market a single model.
jse000@reddit
I didn't know this car existed, it's so weird looking.

Astra 3-door and Megane 3-door in same time were as beautiful as Scirocco. They should drive Astra OPC/VXR and Megane Trophy version.
sugardrip_xo@reddit
The Scirocco R is such a legendary hatchback that still looks modern today. It is a shame we never got these in North America as they are clearly a blast.
Deflated_Hive@reddit
VW USA was like... We hear you and we've decided to bring the CC, Arteon, EOS and VW Beetle. I suppose the Audi TT was better than the Scirocco in every aspect. But still, I imagine if the Scirocco was developed to include a convertible it could've made it to the US.
ferdiazgonzalez@reddit
The Arteon SW is pretty cool though
NONFATBACON@reddit
The Arteon reminds of the Skoda Superb that I had. That car was so good.
Over_engineered81@reddit
VW has some really interesting hybrids and EV’s in Europe that they absolutely refuse to bring to North America. It annoys me that they can’t find a business case for bringing a few of them here
Quikstar@reddit
I was impressed with how new it looked, I would have never guessed the year on the one they used for the video.
robaier@reddit
In a previous video, James mentioned he made 2 "stupid purchases" I REAALLY thought the video was gonna end with him saying he bought the car. Especially when Thomas said "drive your car" or something like that
CUvinny@reddit
Funny that this was released the same day as Cammisa's Audi TT video.
It's a nice car, I didn't know they released a 3rd gen in Europe.
KSoMA@reddit
Doubly funny because they both tell the same story about the Scirocco leading up to the Corrado.

Redditers often comment about Smoking Tire test driving cars on public roads and that it's dangerous. James nearly killed a man getting that thing sideways; I guess TH is going to be cancelled just before their amazon show debuts. Unfortunate. You had a good run fellas!
willpc14@reddit
The Smoking Tire did not get cancelled, what are you on about? People just moved on to the next channel. The same thing has happened to loads of social media accounts.
Das-Wauto@reddit
“Nearly killed a man” is a bit of a stretch. Nearly embarrassingly parked the nose of the car in a ditch is more like it. Still pretty boneheaded manage to do that on a public road, doubly so coming up on a signal man, but it does validate the car’s surprising reputation for oversteers.
T-Baaller@reddit
Plus, the aftermath included in the video helped make for a "don't do this" point.
