Monthly Survivor Gear subscriptions - coworker edition

First off, thanks to this reddit for the information here. I find it one of my more interesting subs to read.
Just wanted to share something we used to do at work. We (12-15) subscribed to a monthly survivor gear box subscription. each month, we would draw numbers of this 12-15 for choice selection when the box arrived. It was fun to get the box, see what was inside, and the chance to get really great gear (sometimes, you just got the stupid mosquito cakes LOL) and we all shared the price of the subscription. A lot of the times, we would trade afterwards.
Just a suggestion.

Honestly, as a team-building thing this sounds pretty fun. Splitting the cost makes the "junk items" hurt less, and sometimes (I'd imagine) you'd discover gear you wouldn't have otherwise.

When "splitting the cost" who gets stuck with the "junk items" then?
Hard enough to get a lot of folks to prepare as they really should, let alone wasting money on "junk items".
I get the major problem here for most is YDKWYDK due to few actually getting out and training any more, but better to focus the actual funds better IMO. It's a major conundrum for new people, they want to complain about how expensive preparing is, but then get fooled into buying useless trinkets or poor quality gear they have to replace.

Ive seen youtube reviews of things like battlebox. Looks fun!Not necessarily what Id personally spend my prep supplies budget on. Id rather get exactly what I need. But Ive still enjoyed the review videos. :)

Guy I know did that/hopefully doesn't still do that... Sent a pic to our group text, lot of overpriced, poor quality junk.
Is it because people can't think for themselves any more thanks to the internet, or is it just YDKWYDK type of deal????

I think it can be fun, like opening a present. And people can use it as an opportunity to learn mofe things. Researching the items. Going camping or backpacking to try them out, etc. Those two aspects are the most valuable part, in my opinion: learning and practice.
The content of the boxes themselves depends on the brand and subscription level. One box that had a posh knife upgrade was sending benchmades and the like.

That’s actually a genius idea. The random draw aspect makes it feel like a mini survival loot-drop every month
What I like most is that it turns prepping into something social instead of just “buy gear and store it away.” A lot of people never start building survival kits because it feels expensive or overwhelming, but splitting costs with coworkers or friends makes it way more accessible.
Honestly, this reminds me of one of the concepts I talk about in my survival eBook — survival preparedness works best when it becomes part of your lifestyle and community, not just emergency paranoia. Small monthly additions over time can eventually build a seriously solid setup without destroying your budget.
And yeah… sometimes you get premium gear, sometimes you get mosquito cakes but that unpredictability is half the fun.
Cool idea, man.

The good thing was there was 15 of us, so it was just a few bucks a month. My best loot was a nice 45L bug out bag, hachet, and 30W solar, cheesiest was mosquito cakes and a self contained smoke hood...but lots of good stuff between. I bet there are better quality subscriptions too. Glad you thought it was a good idea...was fun for us.
