What’s the “it” sport/activity among young adults in your city right now?
Posted by General-Scallion8652@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 201 comments
I’m curious how this differs across the US.
In some places it seems like climbing gyms are everywhere, while in others it’s golf, tennis, run clubs, HYROX, pickleball, etc.
What feels the most popular with young professionals where you live?
sadthrow104@reddit
Pickleball and run clubs for sure
Small-Tax-2829@reddit
Pickle ball for sure. I do not understand it, but the place has great cheese curds so wtf am I supposed to do? Not eat the cheese? Well that's not what's happening. I'd ask someone to explain it to me but I honestly don't care
Punchasheep@reddit
A lot of our tennis courts in our town's parks were recently converted to pickleball. Now where there used to be 5 tennis courts, it'll be 8 pickleball and one tennis court left over.
jsieg22@reddit
SF or Austin?
JeanBonJovi@reddit
Yup I've probably seen more people playing pickle ball in the last few years than I ever saw people playing tennis on the tennis courts near me over the course of my life.
needsmorequeso@reddit
I drive by a whole weird pickleball gym that used to be a big box store on the way to work every day.
DesertWanderlust@reddit
Yep. They've taken over the tennis courts and I wish the trend would end.
TheHondoCondo@reddit
It’s not gonna end any time soon. Pickleball is a way more accessible sport for the average person and in my opinion more fun than tennis for some reason. I guess I see why tennis players are mad, but pickleball players in America have exceeded the number of tennis players at this point, so it does make sense to convert tennis courts that barely get used.
Genesis72@reddit
Nah, I think its really great. We have tennis courts near my house that used to sit empty except for Saturday/Sunday afternoons. They converted them to like 6 pickleball courts and now theres people out there pretty much every evening from spring to fall.
MundaneHuckleberry58@reddit
Im in the greater phx area. Pickleball eVeRYwhEre. Including where the “nationals” are played.
sadthrow104@reddit
Same. Honestly don’t mind it at all. Keeps people active indoors during 110+ summers :)
rogomatic@reddit
That's certainly not what most young adults do, as far as I can tell. It's mostly a sport for folks who are too old and/or lazy to play real tennis.
emmie-claire@reddit
This take is about ten years out of date. Pickleball is popping off. Much more forgiving learning curve than tennis, making it much easier to have a couple friends tag along for their first time and enjoy themselves.
rogomatic@reddit
I'm sure it's "popping off" among people who complain bitterly about having to work outside their home, and seem to consider stepping out of their doorway as some sort of supreme athletic activity. I wonder why.
But at the end of the day, there's a reason the first major event was at the Arizona Senior Olympics.
Limp-Watercress-2382@reddit
You love fantasy baseball and video games, dork.
emmie-claire@reddit
Surely you have something better to do than be this bitter on the internet? Just be happy kids are outside and active. Deeply insane comment honestly.
rogomatic@reddit
Half a dozen of other people have nothing better to do than tell me off, so I suppose I'm in good company.
rawbface@reddit
"Being in good company" means that people AGREE with you, you dope.
jek39@reddit
Being bitter on the internet is this guys favorite activity. At least it’s not pickleball, god forbid.
karmapuhlease@reddit
Hi, I am a young somewhat cool Manhattanite and I can confirm that it is extremely popular. I wish people were playing tennis too, but pickleball is absolutely taking off.
lifes_nether_regions@reddit
My son said there isn't enough pickle ball courts for the demand at his college.
emmie-claire@reddit
My observation at the public courts is that the biggest group is young single adults or couples without kids, and the second biggest is empty nesters. So people in their 20s followed by people in their 50s. Not surprised that it's a popular campus activity now too. It's an easy choice for college recreation departments.
rawbface@reddit
Total nonsense. Pickle ball isn't for people who aspire to play tennis. People play because they like it MORE than tennis.
jek39@reddit
How do you know what most young adults do?
bulmier@reddit
It’s definitely surging in popularity amongst all age groups, many tennis courts have been converted into pickleball because it allows more people to play with less space.
uhmerikin@reddit
Oh yeah. Our country club transformed three of the ten tennis courts to pickleball courts and, hooooly fuck. The oldies got super big mad about it. People threatening to leave the club over it was wild.
omnipresent_sailfish@reddit
Pickleball is very popular amongst the young adults in my city
BankOk9472@reddit
How it started but now a lot of young people have taken it up.
DustyComstock@reddit
Your observation is wrong. Pickleball is surging among all age groups. And calling people who play “lazy and old” is a flat out terrible take. It even sounds pretty snobbish, entitled and gatekeepy TBH.
People play because it’s simply a lot of fun and more social.
Energy_Turtle@reddit
Pickleball seems kind of over here. It was so popular for a while that my gym had pro pickleball on the TVs and the basketball court was reserved for pickleball most days. Those days are long gone.
Primary_Excuse_7183@reddit

davdev@reddit
Yup. I started calling my 14 year old a dirty hippie and playing phish songs whenever he breaks it out cause back in the day only Birkenstock wearing , phish listening hippies rocked the sack.

Absolutely. There were too many sacks not being jacketed hackeyed and they’re out to set that right!

Mountain biking is the popular one here.
EclecticEuTECHtic@reddit
Too dangerous, I don't want to crash and miss a ski season.
Energy_Turtle@reddit
This has definitely picked up. I used to have miles of trails to myself but now there are quite a few more people out there.
Figgler@reddit
Same here, people kinda of don't know what to make of it if you're young and don't like to bike here.
Mustang-Six@reddit
Pickleball by far. Most of the local tennis courts are now pickleball courts. Softball/baseball fields are turning into parking lots. There was a boom in basketball for a few years after a local young man played well in college and started playing professionally in the NBA but even the basketball courts are usually empty while people are waiting in line for open pickleball courts.
CupBeEmpty@reddit
Everyone is saying pickleball but around me that is old ladies and men mostly.
Young folks are all into running or hiking.
I like throwing a curveball to people and inviting them to go canoeing. It’s truly hilarious how bad the uninitiated are at canoeing.
Sure you can sit in the stern seat if we plan on going in a squiggly line that may devolve into a circle. The fun part of canoeing is that you can take like 400 pounds of gear with you. So yeah we may only get a mile down the lake but we can live like kings for the two miles out and back.

my wife was big into running before the armchair experts started to weasle in. then she started doing trail running, until it started happening there too. she stills runs, but she went from loving the entire community to hating about 40% of the people out there.
"that's what she gets for running," I said from the couch.
TheHondoCondo@reddit
Can she not just run alone?
Kielbasa_Nunchucka@reddit
she does, or she meets some friends to run. but she still likes going to actual, planned races as well. they just used to be less crowded, and the crowd was less mainstream and more focused.
it's the double-edged sword of something becoming popular.
TheHondoCondo@reddit
I feel like bigger races are so much more fun, but to each their own.
Kielbasa_Nunchucka@reddit
she runs the Pittsburgh Marathon, and one that I can't remember the name of. but the smaller ultras and trails just don't have the same vibe for her anymore.
AlveolarFricatives@reddit
Oh this is so sad! I’m a woman and my local trail running community is so supportive and awesome! I don’t even know what “armchair experts” is referring to here. I don’t think I’ve run into that!
Kielbasa_Nunchucka@reddit
"armchair experts" refers to the influx of people that she's noticed who push their ownnideal of the "proper" way to run. it usually involves them repping certain gear or brands as necessities, or pushing their own personal workouts as the gold standard, or even just go-pro-wearing influencers she's seen more of.
it used to feel like an organic, social experience for her, and now it's becoming cliquey and market-driven. she just wants to go run in the woods without having to hear someone (who she's never seen at race in her years of doing it) try to tell her how to do things or what gear to buy.
AlveolarFricatives@reddit
Oh interesting! Yeah, I don’t really run into this in my city (Portland, OR). Like, we might talk about our new shoes and whether we like or don’t like them, but no one has ever told me unsolicited what I should buy or what workouts to do. The community obviously will provide tons of suggestions if you ask about good trails or good races, but again, not unsolicited. Sorry she’s had that experience!
Kielbasa_Nunchucka@reddit
that sounds more akin to what it was 5ish years ago. a lot more people have gotten into it lately, it it obviously brings a different crowd rhan when it was still a more low-key thing.
she still loves running, and she still sees a lot of the people she started with and loves. it's just that there's a newer, "look at me" crowd moving in. just the nature of something getting popular tho.

Limp-Watercress-2382@reddit
Curious - how so? I’ve never been in one and don’t run much anymore but any group that encourages exercise seems ok.
HelpfulLoquat8658@reddit
I have several friends that run and they will literally got on and on about how they did this race or ran this far etc. Like i get running is good for your but at the same time I dont need to hear about your exercising habbits constantly

Siri, does talking about your hobbies to friends make you a narcissist?
Limp-Watercress-2382@reddit

HelpfulLoquat8658@reddit
hobbies that involve more than moving your feet tend to be more interesting to talk about
Limp-Watercress-2382@reddit
Different strokes. I, for example, find people who obsess over guns to be exhausting and insecure. I’d much rather talk about hobbies that move two feet.

Two things I've noticed near my place beside NC State in Raleigh, NC
1) hacky sacks have apparently made a comeback
2) Cricket is popular. At least in my neighborhood. Did a walk around the neighborhood right outside NC State and there were 3 different pick up cricket games going on outside apartment buildings. I should add that there are a lot of immigrants in my neighborhood.
SnoozeTaquito@reddit
I play cricket in my local area (Central MD) every so often. The owner of the tobacco store I go to saw me wearing a Kolkata Knight Riders (an Indian Premier League team) hat and invited me to play. I grew up playing a lot of baseball so I gave it a try. I'm hooked now.

Disc golf is pretty big here. Seeing as we have 6 full time courses, 1 seasonal course on the mountain in the summer, and a lot of object courses without baskets. That equates to about 1 course per 10k people. not including the seasonal orc object courses. Compare that to when I lived in Phoenix metro and there was about 10 courses give or take for 4.5 million people when I lived there.
