Is the Ryzen 7 7800X3D worth it in 2026

Hi,
I am currently using a Ryzen 5 8600G.
This was done when I built my PC as I didn't have a GPU at the time.
Now I do, I am looking at a decent CPU.
Is the 7800X3D still a banger for 2026?
AsManDoesManIs@reddit
Depends on budget. Imo the best bang for your buck cpu for gaming is actually the 7600x3d not the 7800x3d. its almost half the price.
Notnowcmg@reddit
Is the 3rd best gaming CPU worth it in 2026? Jesus Christ
iszoloscope@reddit
I assume he means compared to a 9000 series X3D...
Notnowcmg@reddit
Well especially compared to a 9x3D - this gen has become super weird where before for gaming we’d always say get the 5 series or 7 series equivalents, this gen everyone jumping on a 9 for some reason only to get like 5 extra fps!
iszoloscope@reddit
Yeah I understand, but for someone less knowledgeable about these things I can understand the question. If he means what I'm assuming though...
I'm contemplating a similar upgrade in the (near) future, but I have an ASRock mobo so I wouldn't dare to put a 9000 series X3D in it...
translucent_pawn@reddit
I also have an ASRock MoBo and am glad for my 7800X3D.
iszoloscope@reddit
Yeah this issue isn't a thing for the 7000 series right?
translucent_pawn@reddit
Just 9 series X3D chips on newer MoBos. I was worried so I updated my BIOS but I have a B650 Lightning PG so I’m doubly in the clear. Most of the reports are for 9800-9950X3D on an 870.
iszoloscope@reddit
I do have a B850 mobo though, so if I would go the X3D route I would get a 7800X3D. Or wait until the next gen, because BF 6 runs between 140 and 190 fps so there's really no need to upgrade for me just yet...
translucent_pawn@reddit
Honestly sounds like your build is fine. I don’t want to tell you to get a 7800X3D and then have your MoBo fry it, but I have not read any reports about 7 series X3D chips frying as part of the ASRock curse. If you’re willing to possibly have to use warranty, the CPU is a total beast and I’m really happy with it.
George_Mallory@reddit
ASRock boards have a firmware fault where they sort of blow X3D chips up, and not in a euphemistically good way. The CPU socket pins and pads get singed in these events. This fault affects every board that ASRock makes, so it’s probably a corrupted software issue. The fault is rare, but it does happen enough, and ASRock isn’t doing much to fix it or even acknowledge it, when I last checked. I switched out my ASRock board as soon as I learned about it since I have a 9X3D CPU and them’s expensive.
I miss that board, though. I got a pricey Taichi Lite because I thought it would be more reliable. It had so many power phases, that the CPU ran a few degrees cooler 🤤. I didn’t even know that was how physics worked. I was just going for reliability. It was also the only motherboard where I didn’t feel like I was making a deal with the devil for PCIe lanes. Any (sane) replacement was a downgrade. I thought the board would last 10 years. It lasted about 6 months.
NixNightOwl@reddit
The 9800X3D is only worth it if you can get it on sale (and your primary focus is gaming).
It shines more with workstation tasks, like compiling code, transcoding video, etc - so those kind of users can justify a higher price tag due to it's superior performance in that realm.
I just checked newegg out of curiosity, and the 9800X3D is actually on sale right now and is only $100 CAD more expensive than the 7800X3D (aboout $73 USD). Nice.
gokartninja@reddit
Depends on the price difference. When the 9800X3D dropped, it was frequently only about $50 more than the 7800X3D, so it made sense to just get the new one. I'd like to think one should be able to get a 7800X3D for quite a bit less now though
iszoloscope@reddit
Yeah where I'm from the difference is more then 100 euros so... if the difference is that small I would go for the 7800X3D as well! :)
TheReaperSovereign@reddit
Bought mine new in 24, still crushing games. Probably a long ass time before the next cpu has a performance jump worthy of spending cash on the upgrade
zsidofityma@reddit
I bought my 5800x3d like a year ago I still think it was worth it. Also I still have my 2070S that I bought at release like 6-7 years ago. Not planning to upgrade until it dies or I suddenly get a lot of money by some miracle so I will just wait until it dies lol.
7800x3d is going to be good for a long aaah time no matter what game you use it for.
Ok_Scientist_8803@reddit
I built one for a friend using a 5800x3d back then and it still crunches everything that he throws at it, without kicking out too much heat CPU side.
7800x3d is newer and better so you'll be fine for years to come, but if 9000 series isn't costing too much more you could opt for that instead.
KittenVictim@reddit
No, who would want one of the best gaming CPUs ever.
castawayyzxc@reddit
amd fx 8350 mentioned???????????
FantasticBike1203@reddit
I still have my old FX8350, that badboy cooked 3 motherboards, I don't recommend overclocking it lmao.
znogower@reddit
That CPU, and my xfx 280x were the literal dream!
ButterscotchTop194@reddit
I've got one and am really happy with it.
Fucking sucks.
Crying_Reaper@reddit
Can confirm. I upgraded from a FX-8350 to an Ryzen 7 7800x3D and yeah so much better. Really was horrible.
PunchBeard@reddit
Coming from an i5 6600K to a blazing 7800X3D means I can confidently buy and play games released after 2020 without having to lower the graphics settings because of CPU bottlenecking.
I fucking hate it.
DistinctCellar@reddit
Hope ur ok bro I’m thinking about your balls
hecatonchires266@reddit
Lol.
Milon_Z@reddit
Hell yeah, I'm running it with a 7900 XT and it's absolutely bully!
BillionaireBear@reddit
Yes, and typically $100 cheaper than 9800x3d and not that much slower
Mogura56@reddit
Depending on where you're at and the available deals, it can be significantly less than that. I managed to get a 7800X3D during AliExpress' anniversary sale in Japan for $250 whereas the 9800X3D is about $420 at its cheapest here. Absolutely not worth it for a 10-15% performance improvement when you're probably gonna be GPU limited in AAA games anyway
possessd@reddit
I'm quite happy with my 7600x but assuming I can upgrade what should I consider the 9800x3d or the 7800x3d or something else.
Haven't kept up since my build
FireMaker125@reddit
It’s in the top 5 gaming CPUs, as an owner it still crushes every game I’ve played with ease. So I would definitely go for it, it goes great with most GPUs too.
bakuonizzzz@reddit
If it wasn't for the ram i would of definitely gotten a 7800x3d so yes.
FrankThePilot@reddit
I have a 7800x3d and 5070Ti playing in 1440p. To my knowledge, I've never been CPU limited. I guess if I went to 1080p, I could be but by then I'm pushing 240 FPS and that's my monitor's max.
TheYucs@reddit
Only way a 7800x3D will limit a 5070Ti is at native 720p. Even DLSS Performance @ 1440p (720p internal) will be very unlikely to bottleneck you. The 7800x3D was paired with 4090s all the time.
In fact, I have a 5090 and a 14700K @ 5.8GHz and 7000CL30 RAM, and in DLSS Ultra Performance 4K (720p), I am still not bottlenecked. The 7800x3D is about 10-15% faster in most games compared to the 14700K.
Gpudrip@reddit
With a 7800X3D you'll want to pair it with at least a 9070XT to avoid bottlenecking. What GPU are you leaning toward?
HPCmonkey@reddit
TL;DR yes
I use a R5 7600 and it still charts in a lot of recommended specs on brand new games from major studios. A 7800X3D will absolutely crush anything you throw at it.
Phuzion73@reddit
So, architecture of the CPUs change but we have pretty much hit a limit on actual speed. So, yes, that chip is about as strong as they still come. Like I said, you get minor tweaks on modern CPU architectures (cache, GPU/CPU stacks) but I doubt you would notice that much of a difference between the Ryzen7 series and a chip released yesterday. Not even DDR5 can match modern CPUs, not to mention PCIe limitations.
capybooya@reddit
It is worth paying a bit more for the latest generation if you keep it a long time. Some previous CPU's have had a lot of longevity over the one before it, because they introduced new tech, like for example Haswell with AVX2. But the premium you pay shouldn't be very big either, as you may be unlikely to keep it that long or it could turn out whatever small improvements didn't matter 5 or 10 years later at all.
Phuzion73@reddit
You could but it’s a bit of a risk because it could be that, in order to achieve faster board memory or storage interfaces, the slot architecture needs a new form factor and then your stuck in old tech. I don’t know how likely that scenario is but it should be factored in as a possibility.
RoleCode@reddit
I just got this in 2026 lol.
Glory4cod@reddit
It is still pretty decent in 2026, very modest requirement of cooler, a decent dual-tower air cooler like PA120 SE would satisfy it perfectly.
The downside of 7800X3D is its slightly lowered clock speed compared to 9800X3D, but except that, it is pretty good for gaming.
Or if you want to wait a few months, maybe a year, next-gen will feature 12 cores with 48+96MB L3 cache.
translucent_pawn@reddit
Yes. I have a 7800X3D and I am eXtremely happy with it.
Panda_Faust@reddit
Best pc part purchase I’ve ever made
cb2239@reddit
Considering my 5800X3D is still crushing it,. Yes
druguete@reddit
I just upgraded from a 3600 to a 5500x3d... Happy enough
Comrade_Chyrk@reddit
Depends on the price. Its a really solid cpu that will last a long time, but i got a 9800x3d simply because it was only like 50$ more than the 7800x3d. If the price is difference is bigger, id say go for it.
fnord55@reddit
Yes. I bought one a month ago, and I really love it. I couldn't afford the 9800x3d and complete my build, and I was coming from i7-9700k, so I dove right in. It's *phenomenal*, everything runs butter smooth for me now, unbelievable how good it is. I used the $100 I saved to fund my PSU and whatnot, so it was money well-saved. I'm really satisfied with it and have 0 regrets.
MTMTECHGLOBAL@reddit
Yep the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D is still an absolute beast in 2026, especially for gaming.
If you already moved from the 8600G and have a decent GPU now, the 7800X3D is a massive upgrade and still one of the best price-to-performance gaming CPUs around. The newer 9800X3D is faster, but the gap usually isn’t worth the extra cash unless you want the absolute top-end.
ElBartimaeus@reddit
It's insane that it underperforms in all the benchmarks we ran with my brothers. We all upgraded recently and the i5 14600k smoked the ryzen 7800x3d, the 7700x beat it convincingly and yet, in gaming measurements, the 7800x3d performs significantly better.
To my suprise, the same can be told about 9070 vs 5070
phildogtheman@reddit
Yeah the X3D have a far bigger L3 cache which lends itself to far better gaming performance.
If you're building a gaming PC it's a no brainer. If you're doing more specialist heavy compute tasks then intel is worth the consideration.
But realistically the synthetic benchmarking systems rarely reflect real world use.
Mother_Summer_64@reddit
Specially temps wise, my gpu doesn't nearly get as hot while gaming vs 3dmark Speedway
ElBartimaeus@reddit
Agreed. And I still think that the i5, and intel in general, are more tailored towards approachable cpu heavy workstations that are not server grade. (Nor usre, how to put it correctly.) Mid-range cpus seem to outperform the amd counterparts in these but the higher we go the more AMD can pull out ahead. The threadripper absolutely destroys top-top tier cpus but obviously those are designed for a compeltely different usecase.
It is interesting to see which market share these companies try to attract more.
Dazzling-Stop1616@reddit
A chip that is designed to beat the test is only as good as the test.
ElBartimaeus@reddit
I mean I agree, but some don't like this approach when it doesn't support their views. I remember like 10 years ago that AMD smoked both Nvidia and intel in benchmarks but the results in real life applications were tilted towards the other 2, also, they pulled less power. Now it completely turned around with a few products but now benchmarks are the undisputed holy goat.
Dazzling-Stop1616@reddit
Benchmarks at best are designed to measure performance metrics that were important about 2 years before the test becomes a standard.
HayesBrewery@reddit
Yeah 7800X3D is a banger.
If you can afford the 9800X3D get that, but 7800 is still a great CPU
PathOfDeception@reddit
It still is top tier hardware. My 7800x3d isn’t going anywhere.
Calm_Hedgehog8296@reddit
It's the second best CPU ever created
S7relok@reddit
Running it actually, coupled to a 7900XTX. This powerhouse crush everything
Big yes
VersaceUpholstery@reddit
Yup
8600g performs closer to a 5600(x), so it’s a MASSIVE upgrade
X_SkillCraft20_X@reddit
Upgrading from a 5600x to a 7700 was huge for me, 7800x3D would blow it out of the water.
shaumux@reddit
Here I am still thinking if I should skip the next gen too with my 5900x running
justjeepin@reddit
I don't personally get to game very often right now, but turning off my FPS counter was a great move for me. There were plenty of times that I'd be playing, and having a good time, but then I look to the corner and I'm not happy with that number, so then I'm off down a rabbit hole finding out where I'm "losing performance." Sometimes, ignorance is kinda bliss.
shaumux@reddit
I don't look at the FPS counter at all, and for me usually the GPU is the bottleneck anyways, and I'm still trying to clear off my steam sale backlog collected over the years.
VersaceUpholstery@reddit
If it suits your needs, why not
EmeraldJunkie@reddit
I was hoping to replace my 5600X soon but with memory prices being what they are I don't think it'll be any time soon. I'll be running poor buddy til he croaks it.
Diligent_Ad4628@reddit
It’s gonna be an amazing upgrade
kaeziki@reddit
Bro, CPU’s doesn’t age quickly. One generation can last for many many years. Don’t worry about it. We don’t need to upgrade the CPU/motherboard every couple of years.
DogieVENOM@reddit
Paired with a 9070xt and now my 5080. I max all settings and get killer frames. Realistically the ONLY game that pushes my 7800X3D to 90-100% is Fortnite. And it’s a gawd awful game. (Wife’s favorite game btw)
Careful-Computer-685@reddit
No it's shit, mine can't do 3000 fps in my games I wanna play, only a measly 1000fps on roblox Need another 3ghz to not be a shitty CPU and double the L3 cache again
Falkenmond79@reddit
Nah. It’s about as outdated as the 5090 by now. Both over a year old at this point and thus practically useless.
Likanen-Harry@reddit
Yes and you should always wait for the next generation because it will be the shit that makes everything else obsolete.
joeh4384@reddit
The only saving grace right not about how crazy prices are is that new generations don't really offer much improvement for the crazy prices.
Deathh_Angel_@reddit
My steak is too juicy and my lobster is too buttery and I hate it.
Lewdeology@reddit
Just because there is newer tech out there doesn't mean the 7800X3D just starts sucking ass.
Funny-Wind4878@reddit
It's one of the fastest CPUs for gaming... As far as I can Remember, for pure gaming (and in average) it's behind the 9800X3D/9850X3D but, in some cases it still beats the Ryzen 9s X3D chips, on gaming (not sure about the dual V-Cache variants, though)
And, bang for the buck, unless you can get a 9800X3D within 100€ of the 7800X3D, it's the best option.
That said, the 8600G, while clearly inferior for gaming, is not bad...Other than competitive MP shooters (and looking a >120 FPS), it is still decent...
Brilliant_Title8715@reddit
Its the 3rd best gaming cpu out. Yes its worth it.
BoutTreeFittee@reddit
Yes, definitely.

It's an absolute monster. Crushes everything I throw at it.
PunchBeard@reddit
I researched the ever loving hell out of CPUs last year and for the price the 7800X3D was far and away the best CPU for gaming and that's what I went with when I built my new PC just a few weeks before prices went haywire. Paired with a GTX 5070ti GPU and 32g of RAM and I'm in gaming heaven.
utterlyforked@reddit

Went 7500x3d too. Was £80 less (ignoring aliexpress), between 9600x and 7800x3d in gaming, very low power use. A future zen6\7 upgrade will be a bit more enticing!

I'm currently using AMD 7700x that is 4 years old, it's still able to play most titles at 144 fps+ with my 5070 ti, the 7800X3D is better than mine so i think it will still be good.

Bro what, of course it is. It’s still one of the best gaming CPUs out there. I’ve had mine for about two years now and it’s still going strong. If you have the money get the 9800x3D but if you want to save ~$100 then the 7800x3D is solid
okie44@reddit
Same here. Going two years with mine & I see no reason to change.
Accomplished_Emu_658@reddit
You know good last gen cpu’s are still good even if there is newer version right? Now if you are not paying like 80-100$ less than 9800x3d than it is probably not the best choice. Sometimes i see the 7800x3d floating near the 9800x3d price then its a no brainer to get 9800x3d.
