What's next?

(I'm sorry to say, not a West Wing post.) I have taught high school for nearly 2 decades. I've seen trends come and go, but the 90s are back in full rage. High waisted jeans, tight "belly" tops, lots of marijuana usage, and now hacky sacks (which, funnily enough, no one sells locally anymore since malls died and local vendors struggle). So my question to you all is, what's the best trend that'll come back?
nzungu69@reddit
i'm hanging out for bootcut jeans.
sorrymizzjackson@reddit
You don’t have to wait- they are already here. Along with low rise and flares!
nzungu69@reddit
not where i live sadly 🥲

Be the trendsetter.

"You must wear the jeans you wish to see in the world." - Mahatma Gandhi
switheld@reddit
and i will NEVER stray away from them ever again
zoddie3@reddit
I've been wearing them for a year, along with straight leg jeans.
Everything is in. Well, except skinny jeans.
Automatic-Pick-2481@reddit
I’m up for some hacky sack

Good rock music again would be nice.
zoddie3@reddit
Good mainstream rock music. In the age of Spotify, you can find good, newish rock music but it doesn't have any cultural influence anymore.
crazycatlady331@reddit
Holding out for Taylor Swift to release a rock album.
She has a few songs that are rockish.
Geoff-Vader@reddit
Based on most of the openers Olivia Rodrigo lined up I have a feeling her next album will be pushing more into a rock vibe.
ericwbolin@reddit
Good call. I should've specified. Good rock that's popular among the masses again. I am definitely not a doom-sayer when it comes to 2020s rock. Lots of great stuff out there.
Geoff-Vader@reddit
Agreed. I mostly listen to newer music and there's a ton of great new rock. And a lot that's clearly got heavy 90s influence. But almost all of those are artists I can only see in smaller venues and have to explain to other people who they are and why they're awesom.
zoddie3@reddit
Any recent favorites?
I saw Sincere Engineer as an opening band a few months ago and have enjoyed their stuff.
LowGlowVice@reddit
Buckle up, because I’m ready for the return of butterfly clips and mood rings let’s bring back the chaos of the early 2000s.
KittySwipedFirst@reddit
My kid got a set recently. I borrowed them to go out one night.
MotherofaPickle@reddit
I saw some cute, sparkly butterfly clips at the store the other day. They’d be perfect for my sister’s wedding next year.
sorrymizzjackson@reddit
I’ve already got mine at the ready. I think I’ll wear them today actually. The only ones I haven’t seen are the sparkly ones with the springy wings that flap as you move around. I’m gonna need one of those too.
Plumeria9798@reddit
Oh wow, mental memory unlocked, those were epic.
K2sX@reddit
Butterfly clips have been back!
abernathym@reddit
Kids at my church have slap bracelets. Hopefully Trapper Keepers are next
GaSc3232@reddit
You can buy a Trapoer Keeper at Walmart. I have 2 and take them to meetings now. If it worked for 8th grade me it works for 37th grade me 🤣
Secure_Bed_9110@reddit
I would do that just for the joy of repeatedly interrupting droning coworkers with the otherworldy, surround-sound screeeeeech of the velcro as I slowwwly, casually open it mid-speech, unaffected.

abernathym@reddit
I bought a really nice one, different brand, but same idea, and left it on a job site somewhere. I never lost them in school, I must be slipping.
whither_wander_you@reddit
37th grade!!! 🤣
sorrymizzjackson@reddit
We’re also already sort of doing Y2K as a side trend right now. I wouldn’t mind that taking over for a while. The mullets and weirdo mustaches have had their moment to shine.
I’m hoping we don’t revisit the turquoise chevron biz caz in the club statement necklace era. That one can stay safely buried I hope.
What with everything going on, I’m not seeing super bright colors and whimsy coming back soon. It’s out there, but we seem to be more in the “tasteful nude boring kardashian gym outfit” era.
Thrifting has already shot up in popularity due to cost, anti-fast fashion sentiment, and a desire to ironically dress like their parents. That’s funny since I was positively obsessed with the mini revival of 70’s fashions in the late 90’s/early 2000’s which is when my parents were young adults. I never thought it had anything to do with them though because they were not cool 😂
Since thrifting is so popular, I’m seeing some 2010’s coming back once they buy out all the 90’s vacation sweatshirts and bootleg Gucci tees.
Instead of being what our parents threw out, it’ll be what we threw out because we’re the parents now.
Plumeria9798@reddit
I’ve been waiting for the nude, beige Kardashian era to die for close to a decade now. It saves me money, but I want color back so badly.
After_Preference_885@reddit
We're over 40, with no fucks to give we can wear whatever we want
Get those colors out and let them shine
Plumeria9798@reddit
Oh, that’s not the issue at all. I wear what I want and it’s all colorful! The issue is finding enough brights to suit my taste. Every season I get excited to check stores and every season I’m disappointed. But…it makes me thrift older stuff that’s more colorful a lot, which is better for the environment at least.
After_Preference_885@reddit
Ohhh I see. I only ever thrift (I'm poor) so I hadn't even thought about what's available to buy in like real stores. 😂
Plumeria9798@reddit
Thrifting is honestly so much better right now for that reason. Also, older clothes are better constructed. So, yay for thrifting!
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
Y2K will be back for 2038. Unless the digital "end of the world" isn't what you're referring to.
Budgiejen@reddit
Combat boots with flowered skirts was a favorite of mine.
MotherofaPickle@reddit
I wear dresses/skirts if the temp is over 45 and my feet hurt from walking so much, so I was wearing one of my “house dresses” with tennis shoes the other day. I felt so silly. Needed my old boots back to feel more badass.
johnb300m@reddit
My neice wanted and got a “Discman” for Xmas this year!

The wrath of the thing from high atop the whatever!

How long until guy have frosted tips in their hair?
yardini@reddit
Should definitely be coming back in the next year or so.
imlookingatthefjord@reddit
Not using social media (besides Reddit lol)
imlookingatthefjord@reddit
Wide leg jeans. I’m soooo happy I can buy wide leg jeans again.
anyotherkindofcheese@reddit
Maybe the West Wing will have a resurgence and we can restore genuine political discourse backed by facts and rational thinking.
suckacheetasdick@reddit
I'm rocking my overalls today! So happy this one came back around 😆
Chuckpgh@reddit
I'm glad mullets seemed to have left as quick as they returned

Other 90s things I’ve spotted in my middle school lately: Stussy and NOFX shirts.

Hopefully actual human music

"Retro" gaming on handheld consoles. Come hang out at r/SBCGaming to leave behind freemium games and micro transactions, and re-live the 8 bit and 16 bit eras!
Architorture_66@reddit
I clipped a Walkman on my belt, as was the style of the time. To take the bus cost 50 cents, and in those days, quarters had big pictures of eagles on the back of them....
Stratospheric-Ferret@reddit
Gimme four eagles for a dollar, you'd say.
brainfreeze77@reddit
Give me 4 eagles for a dollar you'd say.
Blackbird136@reddit
The belly shirts?? I feel like the teens/early 20s people I see are all wearing oversized tees right now.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
I see kids outside again. We're past rock bottom!
FrenchFine@reddit
I’d love to see those 90s prices come back.
VoddieMC@reddit
Jokes on them. That's pretty much how I've been dressing my entire adult life (when I'm not wearing a suit). Timbs, baggy jeans, baggy t-shirts, Starter jackets... Variations but the template is constant

Pogs and slammers made on the parents' Stepcraft

Rock n Roll. I’m still waiting for rock n roll to come back.
Low_Face7384@reddit
Rock and roll died in the 90s. It ain’t coming back. These kids wouldn’t know good music if it bit them on the ass. Meanwhile, I’m rediscovering 70s and 80s music I used to be obsessed with.
PinotFerret@reddit
I got a Sony discman on eBay and have been rocking cds with headphones at my desk at work 😎
