Is this shootout realistic?

How realistic is terms of weapon use, how people react to getting shot, the explosions, the chaos
(True detective season 3, episode 5)

The use of demolitions is interesting. Whoever initiating the first blast started a little too early, but it does seem to be nominally effective.
Could be a Claymore or an improvised version.
Lot's of headshots.
The weapons--probably .357 Magnum or .38 Special types--are capable of that degree of accuracy and power with training.
We're seeing appropriate reloading and training scars--including the "FBI crouch" for the time period.
Hip firing and one-handed firing were not uncommon during the 1960's and likely continued to influence trainers later:

The weapons being used by the opposition seem to be semiauto rifles and capable of what they're showing.
There aren't any obvious "Not even close" shots and they even avoid "big gasoline fireball" explosions.
The use of boobytraps, especially a period piece like this that looks like the 1970's or maybe early 1980's--wouldn't be shocking for Vietnam vets exposed to the same in Vietnam. Even if they didn't train to make them, understanding the application and utility and having the time to learn the hands-on to make them would produce that capability on return if they were so motivated.
So, nothing really sticks out.

Feels about 50/50. It gives a good vibe but there's a lot to pick apart.
Not a lot of reloading, the second explosion is very weird, metal cars stopping rounds from the AK let alone handguns, the deaths are pretty Hollywood
But it on the surface sells the moment, and that's really what it needs to do

Good analysis

One thing I forgot to say is the soundtrack here sounding like ears ringing adds a ton to it, gives it a sort of layer of realism and chaos that ties it together

Yeah, and that one guy was grabbing his ear right after the explosion
Edwardteech@reddit
No cover no concealment
Rounds stopping in metal car doors.
He fired that revolver however many times and never reloaded.
Only the guys right on the shrapnel ied got hurt
No_Dress_2107@reddit (OP)
I never noticed he didnt reload until now. Good catch.
